Just a quick FYI- there is a part of the aloe that can be extracted and is edible, but the whole plant isn’t safe. I wanted to mention that because many people have their aloes in the house and it’s a good idea to keep it out of reach of kids and pets. 😊

No water, no light exposure (it was sitting forgotten on the floor of a bright room). I just put it outdoors this week so maybe it'll get better care.

one tip to lessen the bad smell: Cut your piece of length wise down the middle after cutting off your plant. Position the piece on a couple of napkins so that the piece is slightly tilted downward. After a few hours (2-4) A greenish - yellowish liquid will drip off of the cutting and seep into the napkin. That is the liquid that gives off the bad odor. Discard the napkin and enjoy your odorless aloe piece.
I grew up having an Aloe in my apartment, after 6 years it had it's first pup, a pup I claimed as mine. Now, 12 years later, that pup has given me over 16 pups. Yes. 16. I will be taking one to my college dormitory to continue taking care of Aloe. Thank you for your time!
I use LED lights. Also regular lights still offer plants something to use for photosynthesis. I let them have at least 10 hours of light a day next to a west facing window ( but the light is filtered by alot of trees). I let them dry out completely in between waterings but when I water them it's like monsoon season. My aloes look happy. If I wait too long to water they get brown tips on thier fronds and I know to water them right away.
When I just bought my Aloe Vera I noticed it wasn't doing well. I repotted it in a pot with a drainage hole. I noticed the roots were rotting because there were almost none left and they smelled really bad. I also started to water him the proper way, and after a few weeks, I noticed some roots coming out of the holes on the downside of the pot. I was very proud of myself! A little tool I like to use to check if I have to water again is to put a small wooden stick, like a skewer, in the soil the day after watering it, so it won't rot because of too wet soil. When I think it's time to water again I just take the wooden skewer out of the soil and feel if it's dry or not. When it's still moist, just put it back in there and check again after a day or two. If you take it out and it's dry, it's time to water again.
I bought an aloe Vera 5 years ago and had it in my room for about a year. I then moved to a different room in the house and didn’t bring my aloe to my new room. I completely forgot about it for 3 years before I took it back. It wasn’t watered in 3 YEARS and it was sitting in front of a south facing window and it survived! I just repotted it and it’s doing Great now :)
My experience eating the Aloe (sans skin) has been problem free. I live in the Caribbean and we were all brought up with the knowledge of the benefits of this super plant. As a child into my teenage years, it was perfect to ingest (whole, preferably because it has a bitter taste), as well as for topical applications to treat acne, dryness, facial treatments, around eye treatment and leave in hair care and detangler. Our naturally grown aloes plant has not harmed me, my parents, grandparents and so on. But this is the first time I'm hearing about a toxicity warning though. But thanks for sharing the vid.
I am of Carribbean heritage also. This plant has been used for generations in my family. The benefits of which fore have been life-changing. I have been using it orally and topically for over 15 years. The only irritant may come from the yellow just beneath the skin. This can be cut away or drained away. I would not be without it. After watching this I have been encouraged to pot the two I have in my home. Wish me luck.🥰🙏🏿
I got an aloe Vera plant for my hair it leaves your hair extremely soft and thick and it’s amazing for split ends! Perfect way to use it is too get the gel mix it in the blender with virgin olive oil or coconut oil and leave that in your hair and cover with a cap for hours and results will be amazing!
Use the type that is in the video. Any size, but the medium to large aloe leaves are easier to get the gel out of. If medium leaf I usually use 2. If a large then I get 2-3 uses from it. I mix with a lil aloe juice too to get the consistency I want to apply to my hair😊
My experience? I had one, that I basically forgot about for well over 5 years. It looked like a pile of dried grass. But as I was about to toss it, I saw two teeny bits with a very slight hint of green, so I put each of them into a succulent arrangement, just to see what would happen. They are now two good-sized plants (less than a year later) and one is producing a pup!
I got handed three pups ( about an inch long?) that someone had broken off their plant a few days before. Put it in some mix in a plant, few months later, after being mostly neglected on the front porch, they are growing will and able to be harvested in small amounts for burns. Plus one has its own pup growing.
I haven't grown any but I've been using the gel for years for all of the obvious reasons and I have removed growth for my skin by continued application of the jail which reduces the size and eventually eliminates the growth entirely.. I have also eliminated liver spots from the back of my hands and the brown spots on my forearms which come from exposure to the Sun. Thank you for the video!
We do consume aloe here in Malaysia and in most Southeast Asia country. We usually skinned the harvested leaves and wash off any green gel on the surface which appear to be toxic. It is actually safe to consume with a proper prep and we enjoy it as desserts here. Something more natural to replace jello. And is very refreshing and cooling especially where the climate we live here is like a never ending summer. Great tips by the way. I enjoy all your content and hope to learn more from you. Garden Answer is actually the skin and the gel that makes it stink. Is hard for me to prep it at 1st as well 😅. It had a very mild sweet taste to almost no taste at all. I usually cook it with some dried red dates and some rock sugar. It makes a very nice Chinese dessert serve hot or cold. It was a recipe I learned from my mom as she told me it was good for the skin complexion 😆

Came back to this video because I needed to repot my Aloe that almost died, and Hubby bought me a bigger Aloe yesterday and it was definitely root bound! The only thing I have no cactus/soil so I had to mix potting soil, perlite and added orchid bark for extra drainage, hoping they survive and thrive in this mix, we'll see!!🥰🙏🙏
I grow my aloe for consumption and for topical use. It's ok to ingest 2 tblspns. of fresh aloe daily. It's really good for your skin, reduces blood sugar and inflammation, plus more. Your podcast was helpful in how to care for them. As I have been over watering, and now I'm trying to keep it alive. I repotted as most of the leaves have fallen off. I praying for a miracle for it to come back to life again and thrive.

So thankful for your video. I have my mother's aloe she passed away four years ago with a green thumb. I however was not blessed with that trait LOL she planted aloe vera outside my home she knew it was one of the most low maintenance plants out there God love her and the usefulness of them. My home was eventually destroyed by a hurricane in swfla. I managed to grab one of the plants before I left. It's been hanging on since. @bobflercher aloe is not toxic to eat many ppl eat it or juice it. They sell aloe Vera juice in stores! It does just as good for your insides as it does for your outsides. It’s just the Alion that can give u upset stomachs . It has -20 amino acids that aid in building muscle tissue -7 key enzymes that assist in breaking down food and boost nutrient absorption -Minerals such as calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, sodium and zinc -and Vitamins A, C, D, E, B, B-1, B-2, B12, and folic acid. Just buy a couple plants and go from there as long as they have sunshine and warmth & are not over watered u should do fine
Quick tip: after harvesting, put the aloe in a container and put it in the fridge right side up so a yellow liquid can drain out and your aloe won’t smell anymore. Happy gardening my friends😊

This was great, thank you. Found a tiny starving aloe on the windowsill when I moved in to this apartment. Brought it back, she's huge, got clones of her in a dozen other homes, mostly other carpenters,we get a lot of abrasions. That was 21 years ago and she's doing just fine.

I ate aloe gel every day for a few years. Within 3 month my immunity level was super high with no side effects. Going back to it now I would soak in water a while first to take out the yellowish toxic stuff, but I definitely recommend adding this to fruit juices - you can't taste any bitterness. I found a 1/2 inch slice of a 2" wide leaf to be right for me.
Good timing, I was just going to repot my aloe Vera. I recently updated my first aid and learned that it is better to cool a burn first with running water before using aloe because the burn will feel better on the top layer of skin but continue to burn because the heat is locked in. 😃
Deb Poirer - yes I agree with you, cool running water is the best treatment for a burn as soon as it has happened because that transfers the heat away from the skin. I think the Aloe Vera would be good for later, when the burned skin is healing, and to ease any scarring. Same concept for cuts, they should be cleaned and have pressure applied to stop the bleeding as a first step, and then once that is all sorted, Aloe Vera can help the skin healing process.
Hi just going to mention that aloe barbadensis Miller can be consumed raw but when cut a yellow liquid called aloeine is produced which smells like onions is formed as a protection mechanism for the plant it oxidises and forms a crusted layer to prevent rotting If you want to eat aloe Vera barbadensis Miller ( the only aloe with yellow flowers) the leaves have to be at least 3 years old, cut the leaf off and then peel the skin off and soak in water and rinse to remove the yellow liquid then you can eat it or use it on the skin. My grandma had several aloe plants and would harvest the leaves and kind of "dissect" the exterior plant part of the leaves any time I got a sunburn. Been tempted to grow my own since she passed and this just shows me they are not only useful, but fun to grow.
I would like to express my gratitude for this informative video. My grandmother cherished her giant aloe plant, which she had meticulously cultivated for several decades. Despite my previous attempts at cultivating aloe plants, my efforts have yielded only mediocre results. Unfortunately, I have either lost these plants or been forced to leave them behind due to relocation. Presently, I am in possession of eight sizable aloe pups and am determined to make a concerted effort to cultivate them successfully..
My mother has been growing this variety for decades and consumes the pulp by freezing it and using it in smoothies and on her face(The woman is 65 but she gets complemented all the time she looks 40!)😝
In the island we eat it all the time and we are wealthy as a bull!! And my landlord she take it for years and she is 93 and fit like a fiddle. It has a lot of benefit. I use it to dexot my body!

Then watched another video where this Indian Man had heaps of plants and he was cutting the leaf to extract the gel to eat it - they seemed to enjoy it a lot straight from the plant to the mouth? For cuts/wounds, I like to mix aloe gel from the plant with raw honey 50:50. I apply it to the wound twice a day and cover with a clean or sterile pad and secure with Coban.
Hi laura, watching from the Philippines... i just revived a dying baby aloe from my sister in law & watched one video in utube, the video said place it in the water (with the root, of course) for at least 3 days and its a YES for me...the aloe leave revived. Two hours ago, was planted already in the plastic pot using normal soil bought it from the garden haus store. I just do hope it will grow soon 🙏

I was given an aloe plant and in ignorance I thought.........arid plant - desert - moist morning dew. So, I sprinkled the plant each morning with wet fingertips so the water ran down the leaves. Luckily in my ignorance the plant survived. I am now watering correctly and have 3 baby plants ready for re-potting. I’m very pleased I didn’t kill the plant, lol. Thanks for the advice on compost and feed, much needed.
This was a great video. This is my first Aloe plant so I’m super excited. I live in Michigan So we don’t always get a lot of sun. I have been putting my plant outside during the day and bring it in in the evening. You answered most of my questions about repotting and watering. My biggest concern will be light I have subscribed so I will not hesitate to reach out when I have more questions and concerns
Hey - I am in Michigan, too... have my Aloes facing East on a baker's rack in front of my kitchen window (a foot away from the glass). I never move them, and just repotted a few babies. Mine are kinda floppy... and now I know why. : ) Best wishes with your Aloe!

Every article was was too confusing and specific, i.e. “NEVER let your lowest aloe vera leaves be lower than 3/4 away from the pot!” I’ll definitely be applying this rules to my aloe Vera, and thanks for demonstrating how much fertilizer to use! Hi I live in Barbados and I have a pup growing in regular potting mix. It hasn't grown in size from when I planted it but it is now sendiņg out pups of it's own.
I think it’s all about experimenting. I have my huge aloe on my west facing window sill in garden soil, I water once a month.. it has been growing wonderfully for the past 2 years and has produced at least a dozen pups
Great video as always and really helpful advice! :) We have a few aloe plants and I find them great for medicinal purposes. I extract aloe and use it to make a hand soothing gel. I'm a nurse and sometimes my hands tend to get sensitive as I'm always using anti-bacterial hand wash in work. So when I get home I find aloe gel so gentle on my skin, in my opinion, it's one of the best home remedies 🌿
I live in a Caribbean country and I grow Aloe vera alot because it's a medicinal plant I use it for different reasons eg treatment for my hair body cleanser ☘️ put in the bathroom to clean the air and others it doesn't need extra care or water just give it fertile dirt and stoney mix in a few months you'll surprise your illustration was great I know if u take too much at one time u will get diarrhea so don't use too much a time keep up the good work it's a blessing some people call it Single Bible great plant
I just got my second Aloe, and I really hope with these tips that this one will survive. It has alot of benefits and I really want to grow it for my hair, my edges shade alot and Aloe could be my only option now. Thank you for the tips. I will keep mine indoor because my dog is a destroyer.
Started with 1 plant...few years later I've given away 2 pups and separated the crowded pot. Used reg garden soil but only water when I remember to lol...drowned them over summer when they were outside and they got limp and yellowed. Didn't water for a few weeks and they bounced back. I live in NY so in winter they go in my basement window for sun and do just fine. Have 3 cats and a dog so I don't keep them in my actual apartment. Very resilient plant!
I had so many aloe plants outside that I gave some away but we use aloe for sunburns and face small amount. They seem to grow well I don't have to water often they are beautiful plants
Diaper rash!! My little girl has eczema and inherited my sensitive skin, so I am VERY limited on what products I can put on her little body, diaper rash cream being one of the tricky ones. When she’s got a really gnarly diaper rash and was in a lot of pain, a little touch of aloe gel helped her through it. It was mostly to help her not be in as much pain, but it did actually cut down on the swelling and the spread of the rash until I found something that worked in getting rid of the rash!

I can't believe people think that aloe Vera is hard to grow. They must of never had any plants whatsoever. I enjoy your videos and your beautiful yard. You are truly a gardener that can explain proper techniques to the people that are new to this hobby. Most gardeners learn through trial and error.
How old is that large Aloe? I’ve never seen them any bigger than that medium one and they tend to look stalky with little thin leaves. These are beautiful. I love the big leaves 😍

This video was super helpful! My boyfriend bought me a small aloe plant from Home Depot, we planted her in a 15 gallon fabric pot, and she loves it! She is HUGE and she also flowered this year! Yet I noticed she wasn't doing so well, her lower limbs are really thick and heavy, some are also a funky color. I wasn't sure what was going on, now I know! Thank you!!!
Thank you so much, Laura! I bought an Aloe a few months ago and I was just overwhelmed with how to care for it... It got flappy almost immediately and I thought that was because of overwatering, but turns out what I saw as "flappy" was it getting thin because of dehydration... I feel so bad for it :( But now I watered it, cut off the brown leaf and moved it a bit away from the window glass as you recommended. I'll probably come back in some time, either because it worked or I need to rewatch to find my mistake😬 Have a nice day!

I completely forgot about it for 3 years before I took it back. It wasn’t watered in 3 YEARS and it was sitting in front of a south facing window and it survived! I just repotted it and it’s doing Great now :)
My experience eating the Aloe (sans skin) has been problem free.
I live in the Caribbean and we were all brought up with the knowledge of the benefits of this super plant.
As a child into my teenage years, it was perfect to ingest (whole, preferably because it has a bitter taste), as well as for topical applications to treat acne, dryness, facial treatments, around eye treatment and leave in hair care and detangler.
Our naturally grown aloes plant has not harmed me, my parents, grandparents and so on. But this is the first time I'm hearing about a toxicity warning though. But thanks for sharing the vid.
We use Aloe vera blended with water, and have no issues either.

I am of Carribbean heritage also. This plant has been used for generations in my family. The benefits of which fore have been life-changing. I have been using it orally and topically for over 15 years. The only irritant may come from the yellow just beneath the skin. This can be cut away or drained away. I would not be without it. I got an aloe Vera plant for my hair it leaves your hair extremely soft and thick and it’s amazing for split ends! Perfect way to use it is too get the gel mix it in the blender with virgin olive oil or coconut oil and leave that in your hair and cover with a cap for hours and results will be amazing!

Use the type that is in the video. Any size, but the medium to large aloe leaves are easier to get the gel out of.
If medium leaf I usually use 2. If a large then I get 2-3 uses from it.
I mix with a lil aloe juice too to get the consistency I want to apply to my hair😊

My experience? I had one, that I basically forgot about for well over 5 years. It looked like a pile of dried grass. But as I was about to toss it, I saw two teeny bits with a very slight hint of green, so I put each of them into a succulent arrangement, just to see what would happen. They are now two good-sized plants (less than a year later) and one is producing a pup!

I thought one of my aloe plants was dead and I threw it out into a bucket of soil I had outside. A month later I found pups growing from it.

I got handed three pups ( about an inch long?) that someone had broken off their plant a few days before. Put it in some mix in a plant, few months later, after being mostly neglected on the front porch, they are growing will and able to be harvested in small amounts for burns. Plus one has its own pup growing.

I haven't grown any but I've been using the gel for years for all of the obvious reasons and I have removed growth for my skin by continued application of the jail which reduces the size and eventually eliminates the growth entirely.. I have also eliminated liver spots from the back of my hands and the brown spots on my forearms which come from exposure to the Sun. Thank you for the video!

We do consume aloe here in Malaysia and in most Southeast Asia country. We usually skinned the harvested leaves and wash off any green gel on the surface which appear to be toxic. It is actually safe to consume with a proper prep and we enjoy it as desserts here. Something more natural to replace jello. And is very refreshing and cooling especially where the climate we live here is like a never ending summer. Great tips by the way. I enjoy all your content and hope to learn more from you. I just wanted to make sure that everyone knew the whole plant isn’t safe just in case it is around kids or pets...and honestly me. I don’t know the first thing about skinning an aloe. Haha! They stink too bad for me to be tempted to eat! Do they taste okay? Now I’m kind of interested... 😆
Garden Answer is actually the skin and the gel that makes it stink. Is hard for me to prep it at 1st as well 😅. It had a very mild sweet taste to almost no taste at all. I usually cook it with some dried red dates and some rock sugar. It makes a very nice Chinese dessert serve hot or cold. It was a recipe I learned from my mom as she told me it was good for the skin complexion 😆

Came back to this video because I needed to repot my Aloe that almost died, and Hubby bought me a bigger Aloe yesterday and it was definitely root bound! The only thing I have no cactus/soil so I had to mix potting soil, perlite and added orchid bark for extra drainage, hoping they survive and thrive in this mix, we'll see!!🥰🙏🙏
I grow my aloe for consumption and for topical use. It's ok to ingest 2 tblspns. of fresh aloe daily. It's really good for your skin, reduces blood sugar and inflammation, plus more. Your podcast was helpful in how to care for them. As I have been over watering, and now I'm trying to keep it alive. I repotted as most of the leaves have fallen off. I praying for a miracle for it to come back to life again and thrive.

@bobflercher aloe is not toxic to eat many ppl eat it or juice it. They sell aloe Vera juice in stores! It does just as good for your insides as it does for your outsides. It’s just the Alion that can give u upset stomachs . It has -20 amino acids that aid in building muscle tissue -7 key enzymes that assist in breaking down food and boost nutrient absorption -Minerals such as calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, sodium and zinc
-and Vitamins A, C, D, E, B, B-1, B-2, B12, and folic acid. Just buy a couple plants and go from there as long as they have sunshine and warmth & are not over watered u should do fine
Quick tip: after harvesting, put the aloe in a container and put it in the fridge right side up so a yellow liquid can drain out and your aloe won’t smell anymore. Happy gardening my friends😊

This was great, thank you. Found a tiny starving aloe on the windowsill when I moved in to this apartment. Brought it back, she's huge, got clones of her in a dozen other homes, mostly other carpenters,we get a lot of abrasions. That was 21 years ago and she's doing just fine.

I ate aloe gel every day for a few years. Within 3 month my immunity level was super high with no side effects. Going back to it now I would soak in water a while first to take out the yellowish toxic stuff, but I definitely recommend adding this to fruit juices - you can't taste any bitterness. I found a 1/2 inch slice of a 2" wide leaf to be right for me.
Good timing, I was just going to repot my aloe Vera. I recently updated my first aid and learned that it is better to cool a burn first with running water before using aloe because the burn will feel better on the top layer of skin but continue to burn because the heat is locked in. 😃

Deb Poirer - yes I agree with you, cool running water is the best treatment for a burn as soon as it has happened because that transfers the heat away from the skin. I think the Aloe Vera would be good for later, when the burned skin is healing, and to ease any scarring. Same concept for cuts, they should be cleaned and have pressure applied to stop the bleeding as a first step, and then once that is all sorted, Aloe Vera can help the skin healing process.
Hi just going to mention that aloe barbadensis Miller can be consumed raw but when cut a yellow liquid called aloeine is produced which smells like onions is formed as a protection mechanism for the plant it oxidises and forms a crusted layer to prevent rotting
If you want to eat aloe Vera barbadensis Miller ( the only aloe with yellow flowers) the leaves have to be at least 3 years old, cut the leaf off and then peel the skin off and soak in water and rinse to remove the yellow liquid then you can eat it or use it on the skin.

Elemental Quartet there’s not really a reason it could be 2 years but no less than one year really since the leaves will be too young aim for leaves around the outside thicker than one inch in my opinion
My grandma had several aloe plants and would harvest the leaves and kind of "dissect" the exterior plant part of the leaves any time I got a sunburn. Been tempted to grow my own since she passed and this just shows me they are not only useful, but fun to grow.
I would like to express my gratitude for this informative video. My grandmother cherished her giant aloe plant, which she had meticulously cultivated for several decades. Despite my previous attempts at cultivating aloe plants, my efforts have yielded only mediocre results. Unfortunately, I have either lost these plants or been forced to leave them behind due to relocation.

For cuts/wounds, I like to mix aloe gel from the plant with raw honey 50:50. I apply it to the wound twice a day and cover with a clean or sterile pad and secure with Coban.

The gel can be used internallly :) some health food stores sell whole aloe leaves for using in recipes , I've been doing it for years.

I was given an aloe plant and in ignorance I thought.........arid plant - desert - moist morning dew. So, I sprinkled the plant each morning with wet fingertips so the water ran down the leaves. Luckily in my ignorance the plant survived. I am now watering correctly and have 3 baby plants ready for re-potting. I’m very pleased I didn’t kill the plant, lol. Thanks for the advice on compost and feed, much needed.

I think it’s all about experimenting. I have my huge aloe on my west facing window sill in garden soil, I water once a month.. it has been growing wonderfully for the past 2 years and has produced at least a dozen pups
Great video as always and really helpful advice! :) We have a few aloe plants and I find them great for medicinal purposes. I extract aloe and use it to make a hand soothing gel. I'm a nurse and sometimes my hands tend to get sensitive as I'm always using anti-bacterial hand wash in work. So when I get home I find aloe gel so gentle on my skin, in my opinion, it's one of the best home remedies 🌿

Started with 1 plant...few years later I've given away 2 pups and separated the crowded pot. Used reg garden soil but only water when I remember to lol...drowned them over summer when they were outside and they got limp and yellowed. Didn't water for a few weeks and they bounced back. I live in NY so in winter they go in my basement window for sun and do just fine. Have 3 cats and a dog so I don't keep them in my actual apartment. Very resilient plant!

I had so many aloe plants outside that I gave some away but we use aloe for sunburns and face small amount. They seem to grow well I don't have to water often they are beautiful plants

Diaper rash!! My little girl has eczema and inherited my sensitive skin, so I am VERY limited on what products I can put on her little body, diaper rash cream being one of the tricky ones. When she’s got a really gnarly diaper rash and was in a lot of pain, a little touch of aloe gel helped her through it. It was mostly to help her not be in as much pain, but it did actually cut down on the swelling and the spread of the rash until I found something that worked in getting rid of the rash!

This video was super helpful! My boyfriend bought me a small aloe plant from Home Depot, we planted her in a 15 gallon fabric pot, and she loves it! She is HUGE and she also flowered this year! Yet I noticed she wasn't doing so well, her lower limbs are really thick and heavy, some are also a funky color. I wasn't sure what was going on, now I know! Thank you!!!

I bought an Aloe a few months ago and I was just overwhelmed with how to care for it... It got flappy almost immediately and I thought that was because of overwatering, but turns out what I saw as "flappy" was it getting thin because of dehydration... I feel so bad for it :( But now I watered it, cut off the brown leaf and moved it a bit away from the window glass as you recommended.
I'll probably come back in some time, either because it worked or I need to rewatch to find my mistake😬
