  • Social media marketing is a lot of work. It takes time to build up an audience and consistently promote content. It can be noisy, distracting and difficult to get traction. Results are uncertain.
Start doing social media marketing and you’ll soon find yourself asking this question:
How do I track social media in Google Analytics GA4?
This video shows you how to use GA4, the latest version of Analytics, for social media tracking, so you’ll know what’s working and what’s not.
0:42 How much top-line traffic is social media bringing to your website?
2:41 How much traffic is coming from each specific social media network?
4:30 Which blog posts are getting traffic from social media?
6:10 Refresher: Campaign Tracking with a URL Builder
7:20 Which social campaigns are attracting the most visitors?
9:15 How are paid social and organic social visitors different?
10:11 How are social visitors on mobile and desktop different? (GA4 Exploration)
Once you’ve watched this one, you’ll know the best metrics for tracking social media traffic using GA4 reports and explorations (spoiler: it’s users, sessions, engagement rate and conversion rates)
These are key skills for digital marketers. GA4 lets you measure social performance beyond likes, comments and clicks.
You’ll know how to compare paid social to organic social. How to track social media campaigns and how to compare desktop and mobile traffic for visitors when social is traffic source, the medium or the default channel group.

Can you please offer a video on how to create this report using the Explore reports? Some of us don't have access to the editing tool, so we can make the adjustments you've noted in the standard reporting. :(

Following your example exactly to the Filtering, I only see in the Session Medium: Organic, CPC, None, Referral, and GearList? Not Social

This is great Andy, thanks so much! How are we able to add reports to the default left column view, rather than having to go into the library all the time?

Thanks for video. I was trying to do that but engagement rate shows 0 % for all default channels. In report table it shows correctly, but not in Explorations. I also discovered that paid FB ads are not reported in GA4 (at least not in mine), but it worked OK in Universal.

Awesome stuff, Andy we need more of this please. The Paid social is not showing up at my G4, Have to assume that organic social is also paid social here?

Same here; none of my paid activity is registering. When I researched it, the only answer that came up for me is that referral traffic reporting is unreliable and to use UTM's on all my links. I'm curious to what others have found works for them.

Yes, ok, thank you. But how do you install the code on your social so it will start tracking? I need a video on getting started.

Great video. I followed all your steps but when setting up the filter, the dimension value "social" was missing. Is that something I need to set up myself? Thank you

This is super helpful. Thank you! I will be sharing...I have to ask though, when I'm creating the filter, and I add Session Medium, I don't have social as a dimension value. I have the specific social channels, but not the word "social" as a whole. Any idea where I may be going wrong?

This was so helpful. Thank you. I have one confusion. How to track organic SM campaigns. The organic posts on IG or FB links are in the profile so I don’t understand how it is possible to tie the link to specific campaigns.

    • @dlred
      @dlred Před 10 měsíci

I am confused by this -- am I missing something in tracking an organic campaign? Is there some way other than creating a URL? Or is there some way to add a URL outside the generic bio URL? Or do all organic campaigns get lumped together as one as generic organic statistics? For paid we add a specific URL built in URL builder but I am very unclear re: organic campaign tracking.

now I found it, it is a little bit different but does the trick, you have to choose the filter session source / medium instead and then "exactly matches" the social channel you want to check, you'll see all of them

This video popped up when I googled how to track social media traffic and at 3:58 you show a filter with "Social" as a checkbox and in my analytics (10/28/2023) after choosing "session medium" in the dimention it now asks for a "match type" and after selecting match type is asks for a "dimention value" but "social" is no longer a choice. Anyone know where I can find the filter to view ju9st Social Media traffic???

  • @priteshpatel6512

But is actually classed as 'Organic Social'. So how do you get paid social? Do you have to amend the utm to ''?
