    In this video I run the Chevy Equinox EV in the Boomerang Challenge! Please remember this is non-scientific as it would be impossible to have the EXACT same traffic conditions. But traffic was pretty typical when I ran this test. Let's get into it!

    Nice. While it looks like the built-in navigation was conservative based on your driving on the first leg, it looks like it might have been accurate had you been going the speed limit or slightly faster (e.g., 70-75 mph), so it might be just fine for the average driver. Also, that first 350 kW charger was almost certainly derated to 150 kW.

    • @theaverageev
      @theaverageev  Před měsícem +1

      For the first leg I was going exactly the speed limit except for maybe 30 miles when I really wanted to make it to Rocky Mount. After slowing down, I realized I probably could have stayed the speed limit.
      There was definitely an issue, but without an OBD profile I can’t confirm anything. Everything is just an assumption 🤪

  • @wandring0spirit
    @wandring0spirit Před měsícem +5

    Given that the maximum charge rate for an Equinox is 150 kW, why do you plug into a charger rated up to 350 kW?

    • @theaverageev
      @theaverageev  Před měsícem +7

      Great question. The Equinox is really low voltage, so it needs 500amps to get the max charge rate of 150kW. This can only be provided by “350kW” chargers. 150kW chargers can output anywhere from 350-430ish amps. It really depends on the brand of the charger and some other factors. It’s super weird I know. But a 350 is the only way an equinox can get 150. Other wise it gets about 105-110kW.

      I saw our 2LT top out at 158KW on an Electrify Canada charger when going from about 30% to 80%. Charged in 25 mins but I’m not sure how long it held the high charge

  • @greenne
    @greenne Před měsícem

    I just drove from Cleveland Ohio to Albany NY in an Equinox EV, 2rs AWD. Avg was 2.9 mi/kwh. I used Tesla magicdock exclusively and did not notice any abnormal charging behavior. My theory is that the low voltage pack requires high amperage, pushing 500A and that causes overheating issues in hot weather.

  • @JakeRichardsong
    @JakeRichardsong Před měsícem +1

    Good test. To me, the miles per Kwh matters more.

    @Longsnowsm Před měsícem +2

    Your charging work around reminds me of watching the Out of Spec guys racing the EV trucks from coast to coast and watching Kyle Conner trying to find a way to make the Cybertruck charging curve work. Basically the same strategy, keep it at the bottom of the pack and the meaty part of the charging curve is very small. Not overly practical. There needs to be a update to sort out that charging behavior and curve.

    • @theaverageev
      @theaverageev  Před měsícem

      Haha yeah! I want to take a trip in milder weather and see how the curve does. If I’m not in a rush I wouldn’t mind charging to 60 or 70%. Definitely hoping for some update to get the thermal management under control.
      If I was on the engineering team and saw that performance I probably would have never let the product get released. Hopefully it’s just a software thing and not a hardware thing.

    • @RyanTobler
      @RyanTobler Před měsícem

      I’m starting to think it’s not the equinox’s thermal management directly that’s the issue, but because it’s only a 400v system and needs such a high amount of of amperage to get to 150kw rate, that it’s actually overheating the charger thermals… thoughts?

    • @theaverageev
      @theaverageev  Před měsícem

      @@RyanTobler It’s not impossible, but I think it is more likely to be the car. The only way to tell would to get the data from the charger as well which I can’t do 🤪. I did ask someone in the industry and they said they thought it would be unlikely as the chargers are rated for much more than a car would impose.

    I noticed your efficiency on the first, long leg was about 3.4 mi/kWh. Then after that, it was drastically worse, some legs coming in at 2.4-2.7. Were you driving over 70mph on those legs? I didn't think there was a huge elevation change you were dealing with, so I'm trying to figure out the disparity. Thanks for a GREAT video and the time it took for you to do it. Thanks for another great report. Currently I have a 23 all-wheel-drive ioniq5 which no doubt would pull this trip off faster. But the equinox has a lot of charms including better styling, a bit larger, and super cruise . You didn’t really mention super cruise on your trip. Did you use it much and how did it work? I definitely could be interested in getting the equinox EV eventually, especially if they have good leases on them.

    • @theaverageev
      @theaverageev  Před měsícem

      I realized that during the video and talked a little bit about it. Super Cruise worked perfectly on the pre mapped roads! There were a few patches on I-95 where it wasn’t mapped or only the express lane was mapped and it would deactivate. Not the end of the world though.
      Aside from that it made the drive a breeze and very relaxing. I have a video on Super Cruise recorded and in the line up for the next few weeks.

      @JonathanCholette The Ultium software and the native apps integrate very well. We have 2024 Lyriq for 7 months and road tripping is easier when you let the car guide you. The Lyriq has android auto and car play but found they are a hindrance so we have not used them since the first week of ownership. Go with the Equinox.

    • @theaverageev
      @theaverageev  Před měsícem +1

      I am going to do an Equinox vs ID.4 video in the next few weeks, but here is my quick comparison.
      ID.4 :
      -Better Suspension
      -RWD (I prefer the RWD and like the handling better because of it)
      -More Cargo Space
      -Better Charging
      -Doesn't Overheat when charging
      -2024+ Infotainment is great
      -Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
      -Battery preconditioning
      -Plug and Charge at EA
      -Staggered Tires (Can't rotate tires)
      -Slightly Higher quality (I'm talking razor thin difference, both are great)
      -2024+ Has great acceleration for RWD
      Equinox EV:
      -Suspension is fine, but really big road variations can be felt far more than the ID.4
      -FWD (Don't love it, feels lethargic when accelerating, handling when accelerating while turning is not great)
      -Less Cargo, but a decent sub trunk compared to ID.4
      -Charging is erratic, seems to be more consistent in mild temperatures (hopefully software can fix it)
      -Over heats when charging, especially in hot weather
      -Infotainment is awesome!
      -No Apple CarPlay, Android Auto (I don't really miss it, but I miss they add apps for the Apple Products native on the Infotainment e.g. Apple Music and Apple Podcasts)
      -Plug and Charge at EVGO, EV Connect
      -Will have access to super charger network sooner than ID.4
      -Also, has battery preconditioning
      -Square tires setup
      -Great quality of interior
      -Acceleration is fine for what the car is, but nothing to write home about
      Hope this helps! I will be doing a full comparison where I will do a side by side!

    I drive this route often to South Carolina, I have a 23 Bolt EUV. I alway take my ICE vehicle due to fear of not making it to a charge station. I usually go alone and I’m a 62 year old female. Are my fears unfounded? I take 81 to Rt 50/17 to Fredericksburg then on 95. Live in Eastern Panhandle of WV and I hate driving through DC. I’m thinking of upgrading to the Equinox next year. Still waiting for Tesla to open up to Chevy.

    • @theaverageev
      @theaverageev  Před měsícem

      I think you have legitimate concern especially with the placement of many of the chargers. I think waiting for Tesla to open up is a great plan and that would make the trip much easier and safer for you. There is a Super charger at a Sheetz in Bealeton that is 24/7 that you could stop at as you cross from 81 to 95 if needed! Once you are on 95 you have your pick of the litter with superchargers and CCS stations!

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705 Před měsícem

      @@theaverageev I'd have to go back and tally your total time spent charging, but based on my limited experience with E-GMP, it should only take 40 to 50 minutes of total charging time to travel 700 miles at freeway speeds. So the time should be whatever that difference in charging times is. More efficient E-GMP, like the EV6 RWD and Ioniq 6 should be closer to 40 mins of charging time, and the less efficient AWDs should be closer to 50 mins.
      Of course, as we know, the actual distribution of charging sites along the route can seriously impact the time (e.g., arriving with a high SOC or having to charge for longer to add enough range to bridge a gap).

    Just purchased a 2LT RS still haven’t figured everything out yet. Your videos have helped. Curious about which adapter you used at the Tesla supercharger. I tried an adapter I bought on Amazon at a Bucc-ees that had 20 Tesla Superchargers…..didn’t work. Did have luck at a ChargePoint DC fast charger nearby.

    • @theaverageev
      @theaverageev  Před měsícem

      I was charging at a Magic Dock site which has a built in adapter.
      Chevrolet does not have access yet so an adapter will not work.
      I will not be recommending any adapters until the adapter standards have been finalized and adapters have been UL Listed. Using a poorly built adapter could cause serious damage and potential serious personal injury.
      I do know several others in the EV business have used the Lectron and A2Z adapters which are both built to comply with the upcoming UL standards. Those appear to be safe.
      Once the standard is finalized and adapters are UL listed I will start publicly endorsing some adapters. I just don't want to endorse anything that hasn't been tested with the UL standards.

      Jim got it, but without Super Cruise it is slightly cheaper than the ID.4, but the ID.4 has no hands free driving (although Travel Assist is still a great system! I love it!).
      I’m finding the suspension on the ID.4 is marginally better than the Equinox. The infotainment on the Equinox is great but there is no CarPlay or Android Auto. Wouldn’t be an issue but the two main apps I use that are on the Chevy equinox App Store are not as functional as their Apple counterparts. A Better Route Plan er is basically unusable. Waze is glitchy as well.
      I like the seats better in the Equinox.
      You can unlock the car on the Equinox App which you cannot do for the ID.4.
