Man, hearing you play RHCP again brought tears to my eyes. It's like that Ratatouille flashback meme, taking me back to 2011 when I started learning bass and watching your videos. Thanks for the good childhood memories, David.

David i really think you adding your voice and filming yourself speaking adds to the quality of this video!

The 2 band EQ sounds more natural, more medium. The 3 band EQ sounds more metallic.
I take both, thank you. ;-)
Thank you for this great comparison.

2 band EQ for sure... but 2 band WITH that tasty graphite neck hits the right spot for me. What an absolute unit.

That 2 band preamp sounds so good, especially on slap🔥🔥🔥

I was waiting for that video! The one I don't have in my arsenal is 2EQ! Must have! But you have to admit that "Aeroplane" sounded better with 3EQ 😉

When i was younger, i had the big Dream of playing a Music Man Stringray 4-String. Many years have passed and i finally bought a new Bass in 2019. It was no Stingray though; i played all basses (i literally mean ALL BASSES) in the giant Store nearby, but then found the G&L Tribute 2000 HH config and similar to be much more suited for me - especially because of the EQ they had. This meant little DAW and much more flexible Live action. Stingrays of the 90s will allways be dear to me. Some of my biggest Influences were RHCP, MUSE and yes also
"Maximum the Hormone - ROLLING1000tOON [Bass Cover]"

    For fingers - 3EQ, for slap - 2EQ👍

Great comparison David! I hope I won't break your heart but I kinda prefer the 3 EQ! It has more character, brightness, growl and punch. The older one sounds darker and clumsier

Are you sure? To me the 2EQ sounded way brighter, on the contrary.?.???

I love both honestly, I think both have their place.
the 2 band definitely sounds better for RnB for example, but for more modern rock for example I think I'd prefer the 3 band.
I still think the Aguilar OBP3 is the best preamp for a Musicman :)

Seems like "Modern's HIFI lows and trebles" vs "Vintage's appeal with amazing mids". Both great in their own ways.

I prefer the 2EQ version, but how would either variant compare to a passive Stingray?

My 2EQ from 92 has a ceramic magnet pickup. I think your stickerbomb bass is an older one too, and has that same aggressive bite to it. Personally, I love it and just use the EQ to controls the highs a little.
You can hear the mids are much more pronounced on the 3EQ (obviously) and it nails that Aeroplane tone much closer !

2eq sounds a million times better

  • @bapt_andthebasses
    @bapt_andthebasses Před 2 měsíci

3EQ stock is more focused on the mids, 2Q added high bass (50-150Hz) and a great extension in the treble range (like after 5KHz). Both are complementary but I think 2-EQ wins my heart, too.

The 3-band doesn't have the guts down low that the 2-band has. 3-band sounds like a preamp, 2-band just sounds like a bass. And for anyone wondering, the difference in sound between the two 2-band Rays here is mostly down to the necks. Graphite vs wood. Yes, it's a big deal. I've had a graphite neck on my 2-band Ray at several points in the past and have always gone back to the wood one because it changes the sound. Deadens it too. A wood necked Ray with EBMM's stock 2 band pre will sound just like that Bosko one.

definitely! also the strings make a huge difference; Elixir Strings on my SpongeRay (6 year old but still bright AF) and 1 year old Dunlop Super Bright on my 2001 StingRay.

It seems 2 band pre has more low mid range.
