I like that you add your fork and shock settings in your bike checks. It's helpful for me as we're similar in size.
very cool to see your consistent approach to stack height, its very common to see no "science" applied to it, bike shops just cut your steerer tube and slam your stem in there w/o measuring anything.
haha I measured 3 times and still had to make adjustments afterwards.
Hi Jesse. It's been awesome to watch your career and see what it takes to race at such an insane level! You've made some big changes in bikes and always manage to squeeze out a little more speed. What's the reach measurement on the Strive and does changing that mean making other changes to the cockpit set-up?
So far I haven't changed much in my cockpit setup with the new reach, just my bar height but that is more to do with the higher stack height of this frame.
Hi Jesse, thanks for the bike check! I’m on the Strive TLD and really enjoy it so far. I see you have a different headset on yours (not the G5 stem with G5 spacers). I wanted to know which model headset that will fit on the Strive properly to change the stem and go with round carbon spacers? My son is also racing on the Strive this year in BC. Always inspiring seeing you riding at such a high level. Keep crushing it! Thanks
Awesome bike Jesse!!! I just picked up a new Strive CFR and was blown away how I instantly felt just right on the bike. I made a couple small changes per my preferences as expected (swapped for my existing i9 carbon wheels with hyrda hubs, OneUp carbon bar, PNW loam grips, 200mm Wolftooth dropper, SDG radar seat, DD rear DHR2, Tenet Nora stem). But dang, never have I required no transition time to adjust to a new bike (outside the grabby XTR brakes as I have been using code RSC's). 33.4lbs without pedals (size M) is decently light. Killed most my PR's on each trail it has seen already. Only downsides was that it was delivered with tons of air in the rear brake line requiring a full bleed, the BB collar was not fully tightened allowing for a tiny bit of play causing clicking and the front rotor was slightly bent causing some rubbing.
Nice man! I'm glad to hear you're stoked on it! It rides super well so I feel like that's why it didn't take much time to feel good on it.
Hey... I'm thinking of getting a Strive too. Question, how tall are you ? I'm between M/L... Rode a L Torque and now have a L Spectral 125, but the Strive is the longest (654mm), 12mm longer than the Spectral. Thanks !
@@nikocastaillac967 I am 5'10" and am on the Medium. I normally ride a Large, but the Strive is quite big for it's size and the medium compares with most brands large with up to 485mm reach and 1262mm wheelbase. So from there, it would depend on your height and what you consider your reach sweet spot. I personally seem to like 470-480mm best these days.
That bike looks like an absolute weapon.
It feels like it!
Hey Jesse, glad to see a bike check on the Strive. Do you ever use the Shapeshifter mid-race on flatter sections (I recall you crazily flicked the lockout lever mid-race back in 2020 on a flow section t o the finish)?
yes! Already used it every race so far. It's an easy lever to use.
Hi Jesse, the bike looks sick! what headset do you have on it? You replaced plastic spaces with metal one? Did you change anything else on the headset, such as crown? Thank you and good luck at next race ;)
Bike looks sick. The shapeshifter mechanism seems really awesome and intriguing- meaningful change to geometry/ shock performance, on the fly, is pretty cool. Are the changes noticeable on the trail? Do you use the "pedal mode" downhill on more flow type trails/ pumping?
I have the new strive cfr and yeah I use the pedal mode alot. Flowy sections alot like you said it helps to pump. I mainly only use the slack setting when hitting chunky bits
It is a super cool feature honestly. I have used it on more flow tracks to make the bike more reactive.
Awesome bike Jesse, I'm curious if you noticed any difference in stiffness/ride feel between the aluminum X0 cranks vs the carbon XX cranks? Thanks and good luck!!
Can't say that I did, the carbon ones are taking scratches a lot better than I would have expected. And while I don't notice the weight difference, I'm sure it's doing something.
Hey Jesse! Great Video! wondering why you made the switch to the longer strive for Europe specifically when people say the turns are tighter? How often do you find yourself using the shapeshifter mid run? Do you notice a tradeoff on cornering to achieve straightline speed with the slacker bike? Thanks!
cool bike!
Thanks!
Thank you for sharing! Btw, how wide is the handlebars?
Hey Jesse! Amazing bike, I just got my new Strive:ON and it's awesome! I was wondering when you say 9 clicks on the rebound, is it from the fastest or slowest position?
Thanks!
Always from closed! Glad to hear you are liking.
Good to see the updates after the spectral. Did you find the shapeshifter useful during the actual race stages as well (i.e. on top of the transitions) ?
yes! I used it 3 times during the stages in Pietra and twice in Leogang.
I use it mid-stage...
Hey Jesse. Looking into getting a canyon spectral and was just wondering what size you run in that frame and this frame? I’m 5’8 and leaning more towards a medium. Thanks!
The second he said he’s in Leogang, I looked at the background and immediately knew where was standing. 😂😂
i like those new unreleased ergon grips ;) what size is that strive? must be a custom XS which normally doesn't exist in their line up.
They are nice! Happy with them.
Which HANDGUARDS are you running?
Awesome bike Jesse, and awesome to see you fighting at the top after changing to a very different brand/bike. Are you running inserts? What PSI do you have your tires at? Do you always tun DH casing?
Good questions! 20-21 psi usually. Inserts only for the rougher tracks. DH casing now yes, DD only if not many rocks
@@JesseMelamedMTB So why DH instead of DD and casings? Is it a weight thing? Compliance? Granted, you're not among the heavier riders, but I'm curious.
@@amedeo114 just protection against slices
that was the same Question I had..... inserts. Thanks for answering Jesse.
Hi Jesse, I have a strive and curious if you can point me to the custom dropper controls that you are using for the pod shifter. Looking at the vid, I could only see one pod controller so I’m wondering how you manage the dropper.
How do you find the Strive back home on more placid trails? I’ve had previous Strives and loved them but them switched to a Spectral as it was just a fun play bike so he interesting to see how the new Strive compares to the fun vs fast
The Strive definitely wants to go fast. So it's fun at home on those kinds of trails.
Sweet! Are the grips already available on the market? They look super comfy (Model?)
I'm not sure, they just launched at Eurobike
I might be wrong but it looks like you're using a Works reach adjustment HS or something similar with roughly 15mm under the headset, then using a 180 fork but with the amount of air to be sagging where a 160/170 would if using with Debonair+.
I found that the Zeb air spring kind of has to be used that way. I bought a 180 to used as a 170 with tokens in it in a similar way and that was the only way I could get it to have the right amount of suppleness and support.
It's a Canyon standard reach adjust headset, the frame comes with it. And I do run my fork pretty sagged but not for the suppleness, mostly because I find the damping so supportive that I can get away with a softer fork.
@@JesseMelamedMTB Thanks for the feedback and hope you have a great season!
Hi Jesse, thanks for the bike check. I would like to know what you use the bike computer for. Is it to keep an eye on your heart rate?
On transfers I do like to look at my HR. But it's more for tracking my training after the fact.
Have you tried running the linear air can on the rear shock? I'm debating what route I should go on my transition since I really want to try HBO but have heard the progressive air can would make the shock too progressive, though now I see you running it along with Hannah Bergman and Caleb Holonko. I assume you are on a light compression tune, but I'm curious about the rebound tune, linear or progressive? Good luck with the races this year!!
I don't find I need the HBO so I just run the progressive air can without it.
Good to know. Not surprising since the strive is pretty progressive already! You ended up switching out the shock then? Any info on the rebound or compression tunes?
What sag numbers are you running front and back ?
Nice bike, looks like you are using a kind of minus angle head set?
The bike comes with an adjustable headset. +/- 5mm.
After many years on fox i've recently got a 180mm Zeb (charger 3 damper) and have been working through set up. Last 20mm of travel really hard to get through with zero spacers and the RS recommended pressure for my weight. So extremely interesting to hear you're running 2 - 3 spacers!!
Curious if you have a custom tune or non-production/blackbox bits in your Zeb that would alter the way it rides compared to a production model?
Talking with Rockshox, they say it’s normally to run more sag and pressure under the suggested on this new zeb charger 3
What’s your weight and how much pressure are you running?
@@DavidFoundCo I'm 6.2' / 225lbs in my riding gear and running 82psi in the fork (HSC full open& 10 clicks LSC from closed). Fork honestly feels great; supple off the top, good midstroke support, etc but can't get full travel which is somewhat annoying.
I do have a lighter than stock tune on mine, but I am running air pressure around what the techs are telling me too.
@@JesseMelamedMTB Appreciate you taking time to reply to us bike nerds lol. GL with the rest of the season!
Hey, is it charger 3 Zeb or custom damper?
Thanks for the Vid! Wondering if you could shed some light on your rear shock fitment. Trying to get a super deluxe on my '22 strive but the current '23 super deluxe ultimate is not fitting with the frame. Are you running a custom super deluxe?
I am running one without the lockout lever, so it has a DH cap installed. Previously I just sawed off the rebound lever...
@@JesseMelamedMTB gotcha, yeah that's where I'm at.. sawing off the lever. Just wondering if there was a more elegant solution lol. Did you/your mechanic do the dh cap swap or is this something from Rockshox that civilians don't yet have access to?
Had the same issue with my 2023 Strive after busting off my piggy back on a drop so now going with a fox coil. I’ve prefer RS but been told to remove the lockout controller and cut the pin.
Hi Jesse, thanks a lot for your presentation of your bike. You said that you mounted the Reverb reversed. Because you want to steepen the seat angle or why?
I wanted to keep the axs dropper and this allows me to run the 170mm without tire buzz
@@JesseMelamedMTB Ah, thanks mate, now I understand.
Speed Dealin
yessirrr
Nice. What size frame? I need those 2.5" DHR II's!
The smallest they make!
They are niceeee
Does your fork have the stock charger 3 damper? Or a custom compression/rebound tune?
Just a charger 3.
I am on nuckproof mega 170mm front 160 rear def going to 180mm fork soon for parks
Nice!
@JesseMelamedMTB how does it feel over 170mm front dose it hurt pedaling much
Just got my torque 29 cf 7 and the bikes a blast to ride. That being said right out of the box there is a nasty creek and i cant figure it out. Are creeks really common on canyons?
I haven't had any! Is it from the headset? Usually where creaks start.
@@JesseMelamedMTB nah man its coming from somewhere in the middle of the bike. Lubed the bearings in the pivot spots but didnt have any success. Hopefully customer service can figure it out or at least compensate me for bringing it to a shop to have it looked at.
The bike is sooooo fun to ride and im super stoked on it but creeks drive me crazy.
@jessemelamed do you prefer riding lower pressure (higher sag) and spacers that more normal sag and no spacers for example? I have difficulty using all the travel on mine, I am already a bit under rockshox pressure suggestion and thinking on going lower until I can get full travel usage and then go from there adjusting compression and rebound
If you aren’t riding stuff that should be causing you to use all your travel then don’t worry about not using all of it
That seems to be the way I have gone, although I am still able to use full travel. but I prefer to use more travel more often than using all travel. You should only use full travel once a run on an extreme situation
what sunglasses are those - they look sick 😀
Oakley Sutro Lite
Do you run Cush core in your tires? I’m interested in trying some out.
I do when the courses require them. I think they are good for everyday use as well.
No inserts?
Did u change the headtube angle? Because It looks steeper than the original
Might just be the way it is sitting in the rocks.
Is the rear shock purposely upside down to allow water bottle clearance?
It's just the way it fits in the bike.
Those look like some new Ergon grips.
Yes they do
What are the ride characteristics between the 25mm rim and the ex511 30mm???
I think I explained it in this video no?
@@JesseMelamedMTByeah but is there any thing more you like about the ex471 over the ex511.
How does it corner, is is weaker against dents?
Are you running an eccentric headset to reduce the reach?
It comes with one! So yea, it's currently in the shortest position.
do you no longer race the Spectral were you disappointed?
I liked it! I only raced it for tasmania because it was less rough.
Are you running a lighter tune in the rear shock?
I believe I am.
Hi Jesse, what glasses are your wearing?
Oakley Sutro Lite
did you say what bar width you are running?
I did not! 720mm
Do you run tire inserts
On rough tracks
New Sram Code - mineral oil version?

@@JesseMelamedMTB Btw the bike looks great! enjoy the ride and smash it in Canazei! ;)
Did I miss it? But what PSI are you running on your tires?

@@JesseMelamedMTB You're awesome for responding to everyone. Thanks and all the best for this years EWC!
whats ne name of the grips?
I don't know
what size is your handlebar?
720mm
@@JesseMelamedMTB Tks 👊
Size small?
the smallest
@@JesseMelamedMTB did they make an XS for you?
all my friends absolutely crap on canyon bike ive been beating the hell out of them for years now, they are amazing bikes
That's sweet! I'm glad to hear! Screw yours friends haha
shame the shapeshifer shits themselves after 5 rides and canyon cant even replace the part . sold the bike and gota spesh enduro. the strive is a great bike, jusg a shame on the canyon support.
Interesting to hear! I haven't had one go yet and I don't think we've done any maintenance to it.
12 months old ridden 2-3 times a week and works fine here.
I understand that was a problem with the previous generation strive, but have not heard of any reliability problems with the current gen.
I have been riding the Strive 2022 for 10 months now, and have not had any issues with the ShapeShifter, works perfectly.
Shapeshifter works great! I had problems with the first generation. Every once awhile just take out the pivot bolts that connect your shapeshifter and main shock and clean them up and light grease.
