  • BACKPACKING THAILAND 🇹🇭 EPISODE 2
    We've been released from quarantine after the test&go program in Bangkok and our first stop is Chiang Mai! So the same day we received our negative test results, we booked and hopped on a sleeper train from Hua Lamphong Railway station and spent the night in transit. We got a 2nd class ticket with AC and here was our experience!

    How do you afford to travel? - I now earn a full time living through creating these CZcams videos, affiliate links, selling digital products and my clothing line. Is travelling solo safe? - I would argue the answer is almost always yes! As long as you use your common sense and you follow your own government's guidelines about travelling in that country. I have made several videos on backpacking safety on my channel.
    Do you have plans to settle down? Yes, I'm currently saving to purchase my first property in the UK and I'd love to have children one day. I doubt I'll ever live a completely 'conventional' lifestyle by society's standards though, as I often have my own preferred way of doing things.

    I went on this exact train alone back in Dec 2017 at only 18 years old, my experience was sooo different! It was packed to the brim with people and I got one of the top bunks which wasn't the easiest things to climb up to lol. It made me laugh when you went to the toilet, it still looks exactly the same, even the toilet role held up by the red string! I stayed at that hostel too (by the looks of it), how nice is it!! Hope you're having a great time :)

    This is perfect in a way of letting people know what to expect !
    Back in times I travel alot with the same kind of a trains: from Bangkok to Surat Thani (train leg to Koh Samui) and back BKK (it was 4 hrs late at the end, please dont do any connection to other types of transportation - its totally unreliable). And also from Surat to KL, Malaysia - we had to change trains at the border. Bus is much much better imho.

  • @WhenAdventureKnox
    @WhenAdventureKnox Před 2 lety +5

    I've not done the train to Chiang Mai, but instead to the border with Laos, but this brought back happy memories, going to the 12Go Asia office to pick up pre-ordered tickets! We did the sleeper in a 1st class compartment (we were only away for 2 weeks so budget didn't need to stretch as far as yours does) but if I'd known 2nd class would be as quiet and peaceful as your experience was - no real need to pay the extra! Your description of what its like going to the toilet on a train was pure gold. Deserve an award for that! 🙌🙏🤣

      @BackpackingBananas  Před 2 lety +3

      Oh cool! Funnily enough, I remember going to the border of Laos 9 years ago! But I think we travelled by boat! It’s great there are so many ways to get there! I’d love to experience the 1st class one day!

    I’ve taken that train many, many times over a 25 year period. I’ve never been able to sleep much on it because of the rough ride on either the day that I arrive or the day that I leave, usually 30 days later (so it can’t be jet lag). They do have newer trains than the one that you were on. I prefer the older trains because of the luggage racks next to the seats. I bring 2 suitcases and a carryon with items going to my house in Chiangmai so I need the luggage space. If I’m in a hurry, I take my luggage to the train station and ship them to Chiangmai and take a low cost airline carrier to Chiangmai.
    About a week ago, I bought an airline ticket to Thailand for 2 months, starting September 1. Your vlogs on Thailand inspired me to do it.

I'm planning to take this train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok at the end of my two months there because I love trains. The trains are all supposed to have western toilets in addition to the squatty potties, but I'll need to confirm that. (I had 2 knee replacements thanks to soccer, and I don't think they will let me squat. 😮)

    Glad to see the video form the rest of your trip in Thailand.
    I think it's because of both COVID and also the old sleeper (rather than new Chinese carriage with red sleeper and western toilet) that it's so empty. Nearly fully booked when we booked weeks in advance for a same journey 3 years ago. It's both good and bad that it's so empty. Sleeper trains were so rife with crime in the past, why they never turn the lights off at night (difficult to sleep without an eye mask for those in upper bunk). And why book the railway ticket with the agent rather than book directly via State Railway of Thailand (SRT)?
    BTW I've been to that same Laap Paak Thai restaurant and had the same menu years ago (Khao Phad Tom Yam)!
    Looking forward to the video from the rest of your trip in Thailand!

    I did this same journey a few years ago. Like you, the taxi driver dropped me outside the station and then I had to cross that crazy road to pick up my tickets from 12Go. Amazing journey though. The first-class ticket price is ridiculously cheap.
    In first class you get a whole room to yourself, with a plug socket, sink and big window view from the back of the train (so you see the front of the train snaking round the hillside in the morning).
    You also get an evening meal and breakfast served to your room (they bring you a menu when you board so you can choose your food in advance).
    And you get the use of a first-class waiting area at the station in Bangkok, with food, drink, TV and air con. I think the full price was £35.
    While you're in Chaing Mai, sample the coffee which is the best I've ever had, the night market which is amazing and also go out into the sticks on a tour to care for elephants (not the ones where you ride them). It was a brilliant experience doing that.

    I more than likely will be taking the train the day that I arrive from the U.S., May 1. Airline tickets, plus checking 2 pieces of luggage, would be around $100-$125. I’ll be going from the new train station, which looks more like an airport. I’ll take your train, or the one that leaves at 10:20 PM. They are both old and still have the baggage stalls next to the lower seats. It looks like most CZcamsrs are taking the newer Chinese express trains. Hopefully, that means fewer people taking the older trains and more space for my luggage. I’m looking forward to your upcoming vlogs in Thailand!

    I imagine you go hostel to hostel . You go out and explore . Are you able to safely leave your stuff at the hostels while your out exploring?
    I’ve never done it . Cam across your videos and you are the best for info ! You inspire me . I’m going in Sept .

    (It seems that a toilet paper was furnished in the train bathroom, but it was not there during my Thai trip.. It was fortunate for you :)

    would be great if you could do a comparison between the sleeper train and flying from Bangkok to Chiang Mai - price, travel time. maybe if you do a budget video.

    This was a perfect insight into a sleeper train! Definitely doing this on my Thailand trip in February! P.S was there an opportunity to get snacks on the train in the end?

    • @BackpackingBananas
      @BackpackingBananas  Před 2 lety +2

      Like twice, a street seller would come onboard selling a few snacks but honestly I didn’t think they looked appealing - deffo was necessary to bring your own snacks!!

    • @mainlineto5988
      @mainlineto5988 Před 2 lety

      From memory, they did have a snack bar when I did this journey - but that was pre-covid time and I can totally see why they wouldn't want people mixing onboard now. Maybe in a few months they will reinstate it. But I think as BB has said, buying your own snacks from a 7/11 in advance is easy.

    I think it’s mainly empty because flying is much cheaper and faster. It cost around 600 BHT and 1:15 flight. Might be fun for first time tourists in Thailand but not backpacking cost efficient

    Can you give us a video of what you’re doing money wise? I think in one of your last ones you said you weren’t currently carrying much cash? Though maybe I’m thinking of you having some spare GBP 😅 but do you have Revolut or Starling maybe? How much are you taking out of ATMS, how much do you pay for with a debit or credit card? Full breakdown would be amazing 😁 absolutely loving the series so far, can’t wait to do it myself hopefully next year!
