  • BBC Radio Commentary by David Francey on that fateful day at Dens Park on May 3, 1986, when Dundee substitute Albert Kidd broke hearts in more ways than one and became a folk hero for Hibs and Celtic fans everywhere. My dad used to record the commentary of games on his reel-to-reel, so the fade-ins and outs are his.

I went to Dens Park as a neutral that day because it was such a huge occasion. The stadium was packed, with the majority of fans being Hearts supporters. I did not expect the game to turn out the way it did, but I was disappointed in the way that Hearts approached the game as they played differently and rather negatively from their previous games and paid for it. The despair in the stadium was palpable and they ended up losing the Cup Final as well soon afterwards. I remember someone saying Hearts, Mita won the league, Mita won the Cup. (Mita being their sponsors)

I remember being at Easter Road that day...03/05/1986....we were losing to Dundee United and their keeper caught the ball as a massive radio-news cheer filled the ground...the keeper thought he had given away a Pen (but Albert Kidd had scored his first of two)! We lost 1-2 but it was still a happy day :)

As a Celtic fan, would have been thrilled anyway, but it was amplified by the behaviour of the Scottish media, who had Hearts crowned champions way prematurely. Fact, some journalists criticised Davie Hay for withdrawing players from the Scotland squad for our match v Motherwell a few days before Love St., the theory being that the league is over anyway. We won 2-0 at Motherwell and then there was Love St., proving Hay right. (A few Hearts fans were quietly in the Fir Park crowd in case Celtic slipped up and gave Hearts the league. Poor souls.)

Hearts bottled it , plain and simple ; they only needed a draw . Celtic should be applauded for rising to the occasion . When Martin O'Neill's Celtic side lost ( ie bottled it ) the league on the final day away to Motherwell after being a goal in front , I was absolutely gutted . Afterwards , with time to reflect , I realised that any team who have the title in their grasp and fail to see it out , especially being a goal up , and the bottle it , deserve all they get . Rangers only needed a draw to all but clinch the treble in 1979 at Celtic Park . They were one up at half time and after the break Celtic had a man sent off . Ten man Celtic went onto win 4-2 and win the league . Rangers bottled it and got what they deserved that night - nothing !
