- The bluegill is a common fish of lakes, ponds, and slow rivers. It is a curious fish that can be easily caught by beginners and makes for excellent eating too. They are usually caught by fishing with a hook, bobber, and worm, but will also take a variety of live baits or small jigs, spinners, or tiny crankbaits. Learn about the bluegill and how to catch one.

You make the absolute best fishing videos ever. You break things down in a way that both beginners and advanced fishermen can take away something from your short quick vids. Keep up the great work!
Thank you - I appreciate your feedback.
Great video as always from you. Bluegill was the first fish I remember catching as a kid. They hold a special place in my heart as an angler and always will. Thanks again for the awesome content!
Mine too. Thanks for the comment.
Same. I used to catch and insane amount as a kid, now I can't land one to save my life
Me too, I started keeping them as pets
@@SaltysGaming I have a pet pumpkinseed
@@FishingwithNat nice! How big is it
I probably watched 20 videos on how to catch bluegill with a bobber rig or a bottom rig and you’re the first person to actually teach me how to catch them. Every other video I’ve watched was being absurdly specific about with line weight hook, and bobber you need to use I went out today with a bobber rig with 6 pound test on my ugly stick dock runner and a small split shot to a number 1 circle hook and on my old zebco with 15 pound test mono And caught five bluegill and a channel cat within an hour because of your video. Thank you very much. Tight lines man
Awesome. Thanks for the comment and I'm glad it helped you out!
I caught two within minutes on a large hook with a worm and a sinker. I was trying for catfish lol.
@@blackstarbird Oh yeah, they'll hit worms even if it's a huge worm or a huge hook.
Bluegill are one of my favorite fish to catch
They are tons of fun
How you manage to have so much practical information delivered clearly in such a short amount of time always amazes me. I've heard of people catching bluegills around where I live but I've never caught one myself which is strange because I'm fishing with the basic bobber and worm technique in waterways where other anglers claim they are. I only ever catch perch with this method. Thanks again for another great video!
Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment. I'm glad you enjoy my video style. Your time and my time are both valuable so there's no need to pack a video with a bunch of useless fluff.
Great information shared in the few videos I’ve watched. Straight to the point for the better good of someone else. No view farming or dragging on a topic. Brief and effective. Thank you kind sir. Cheers from the midwest!
Thank you - I appreciate your feedback
This covered everything, thank you so much.
Awesome - thanks for the feedback
Just another quality info presentation. TY Nat.
Thanks - glad you liked it!
I remembered I caught my first bluegill, and took it home to pan fry it. It did not disappoint.
Fun to catch and tasty to eat!
Just stumbled across your channel. I love the scientific approach you take to teaching fishing!
Glad to hear it! Thanks for this feedback and welcome to the channel!
I love your videos man, I'm getting into fishing and your info is pure gold, I tried a couple of times catching a freshwater species I haven't had any luck maybe it's because I don't know enough, I went shore fishing at the sea and I caught a croacker the feeling was awesome I let the little guy go. Thanks for your help I'll keep trying on the river, Greetings from Mexico.
Thanks for the comments. Good luck!
Thank you! Great video as always.
Thanks for the comment. Glad you liked the video.
I absolutely love these videos and adore them. If you could I would love to see you make a video on life of a carp I don't go for them, but I think that would be an awesome video. Keep up the great work!!!
Actually, I was planning to do that. I do target carp once in a while, especially with kids that have some experience with panfish but haven't caught anything big yet. A big carp puts up a heck of a fight and they are actually pretty interesting fish.
Thanks for a great video! I grew up near Ketona Lake in Alabama & always enjoyed seeing the world record Bluegill mounted & displayed in the show window of a good friend's hardware store.
At age 83, I now live on a larger lake 100 miles away. I especially enjoy catching Blugills on a fly rod! Great Fun! Thanks for sharing.
Bluegills are a blast on a fly rod. That's cool that you've seen the world record mount in person!
This is a real good video I’ve been trying to catch trout for some time now if you could do a video on it it will be very useful but not only for me but for other people also hope you have a good day😊
Thank you. I appreciate your feedback and suggestion.
Love the content. Keep them coming. Have you ever done how to setup your rod and bait for panfish or catfish. I know you need bobbers and stoppers, but im still a little unsure of the distance between them and the hook as well as how heavy a weight to use.
I am working on a video about bobber fishing where I'll get into those details. Thanks for the suggestion.
Nice video! Some good information. Very interesting. Appreciate you sharing!
Thanks!
Love bluegills! Thanks!
Me too
Honestly one of my favorites both to catch, and eat. It's a great time just going out and catching these. Very zen in the right spot. Good motivation to start a worm bin.
Very true. It's great to have your own supply of worms! It's raining hard here tonight so I'll be walking around picking worms off of the driveway at sunrise!
@@FishingwithNat Same! 1 thing I would add to your video is that they are one of the best pike/bass baits if your area allows live bait. Getting good at catching the small bluegill will make you very good at catching big bass and pike :)
@@voxsdungeon Very true. Live bluegills are also one of the best baits for flathead catfish and big channel cats.
@@FishingwithNat Oh cool. Not sure I have many of those in the UP. Maybe i'll find out this summer :)
@@voxsdungeon Cats don't really go up that far. You could probably find some bullheads but you'll have to go south to central/southern WI/MI to find decent cats. Flatheads are mostly in the Fox River, lower sections of the Wisconsin, and the Mississippi.
Went fishing for the first time and caught over 8 blue gill and one large mouth bass on a worm bait and hook best experience I could’ve asked for I will be fishing for a lifetime 🎉
Awesome!
Awesome video man! You should do crappie next, great to catch and even better to eat.
Crappie is on the list. Thanks for the comment and suggestion.
Any fish you'd say give a crumby fight given their size? In my experience, bullhead can either give you a decent fight or feel like you're dragging in a sad stick
Walleyes. I usually can't tell a 12 inch walleye from a wet sock.
Can you do a video on bobbers, types of bobbers and how to combo them for different scenarios?
Yes, I was thinking of doing that this summer. Thanks for the suggestion.
great video!!!!!
Thanks!
First fish i ever caught was a bluegill on my uncle’s pond
Definitely the first species that many anglers caught as they learned how to fish. 🙂
Great video! Do you have one on how to do a Carolina rig?
Not yet!
1:36 not gonna like that turtle scared the crap out of me!!😂
I wouldn't want to mess with him.
Could you please do gar? I want to know how to catch them. Also trout/steelhead/salmon would be cool!
Gar are super interesting. I would love to do a video on them. The trick is getting good underwater footage of them! Thanks for the suggestions.
Was any of that shot at edinboro lake? Possibly back in the fingers?
Nope
First time i went fishing with my dad we caught a bluegill. I dint have a good grip on the bastard and he ended up stabbing me in the palm with his spines
Happens all the time!
When I was a kid I was cut by that dorsal fin 😂
Me too. I've been poked by bluegills many times!
I’m convinced bluegills would eat a booger off a hook.
Ah, the forgotten bait! Yes they will.
A 4 pound bluegill! Holy mackerel!
I would love to catch one
No, holy bluegill. 😜
i love panfishing
Me too 🙂
Are you in Jefferson
Nope
💞Wow🧡🧡🧡🧡💜💜🧡💜
Thanks

Thanks for watching
Most of those were shellcracker’s not bluegill it’s a different fish with a different diet. Learn your fish 😂😂😂😂
Nope. All of those fish were caught/filmed by me in Wisconsin and we don't have shellcrackers (redear sunfish) here. Shellcrackers would have a distinctive red outline on the posterior edge of their gill plates.
