    I noticed some horrible distortion in the corners on the 10-22 shooting wide open. I mostly always stop down the lens which can deal with this but its interesting to note that the 10-18 performs better in this area, albeit it is a slower lens.

    I've shot with the 10-18mm for 3 years and the 10-22mm for 3 months and I can say there is definitely a slight sharpness improvement with the 22mm. Also, lens distortion in the 11-14mm range is slightly less significant on the 22mm. The 10-18mm is a very good lens, especially for the price, but I am confident there is an improvement with image quality with the 10-22mm.

    I have been struggling with deciding what wide angle canon lens I should get. I have been bidding on 2nd hand canon 10-18 as the 10-22 are much pricier. I have a sigma 10-20 wide angle 1:4-5.6 but its a lot heavier and no IS - I'm keen to get a decent wide angle I can use mainly outdoors with a glidecam - I recently got a Samyang 14mm F2.8 but it also has no IS and is a manual lens - this lens I got for wide angle in low light but I am keen on the 10-18 Canon as it appears to be much lighter and compact. Great comparison and after seeing your vid I'm definitely going for the 10-18 Canon

    • @TheOtherPhotoGuy

      Hey Patrick, thanks a lot for the detailed comment and I follow your thought process. The main fault I find on the 10-18 having used it for quite a bit longer now is the flaring and loss of contrast in challenging light, you will need to set up your shooting angle to compensate or deflect the light, otherwise it certainly is light and compact but in saying that I have given mine some pretty rugged treatment and it holds up pretty well. Hi, cool video! It came at a perfect time as I'm looking at which one of these wide angle lenses to put on my 90D for landscapes. They will be on a tripod so IS is not really a contributing factor for my needs. So would you say I'd be better off with the 22mm seeing it will always be on a tripod? Keen to hear your opinion. Thanks!

    • @TheOtherPhotoGuy
      @TheOtherPhotoGuy  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey there, thanks for the comment. If you are doing landscapes and will keep it on a tripod the 10-22 is the better option, with much cleaner photos. Try to find one you can hold before you buy. If the body is still rigid and tight you’re good, if it feels a bit loose or sloppy then the lens is moving around and some corners could be blurry.

    Hi. I'm a beginner and still on the learning curve about lenses. I know that the 10-22 has higher maximum aperture of F 3.5 than the F 4-5 in 10-18. I would like to ask if this slight difference would really be significant factor under low light? Thanks

    • @TheOtherPhotoGuy
      @TheOtherPhotoGuy  Před 3 lety +3

      Hey Jessa, thanks for checking out the vid and for the question... in short my answer is yes it does make a noticeable difference in low light having the extra 2/3 stops of light at the same shutter speeds... f/4.5 can be quite dark whereas f/3.5 is about standard for most kit lenses even tho the 10-22 is not technically a ‘kit lens’... the counter argument is that the 10-18 has image stabilisation which would allow you shoot handheld at a slower shutter speed to get the extra light - that is no good for moving subjects though, so in that case the 10-22 is the one to go for. Hope that helped and have a great day! (Also be sure to subscribe for the 500 subs giveaway with more to come!)

    Cool video man. Wondering what you would suggest between these two lenses for real estate. New too it but also wanna make something out of it. Using a Canon T6s and I do not own any wide angle lenses that I could use comfortably for wider angles. Maybe other brands beside canon that won't break the pocket if they're used.? Some said upgrade to full frame. Saving that for the future unless I stumble on something that doesn't seem too bad.

    • @TheOtherPhotoGuy
      @TheOtherPhotoGuy  Před 3 lety

      Hey there, thanks for dropping in... I shot real estate on a crop sensor with the 10-22 which I found to be sharper than the 10-18 and also suffered from less light flaring than the 10-18. The 10-22 had more green chromatic aberration but this was easy to remove in processing. I have a full frame EOS-R but I still use the crop sensor for real estate. Be sure to use a tripod and stop down to F/8'ish to ensure sharpness across the frame and sufficient depth of detail. Hope this helps and hear from you again!

      Hey Haziq - thanks for the comment, and I would have to agree with you on that one. I think the 10-18 does take a bit more work to control flare and softness but if it can be stopped down and on a tripod it is sharp indeed. I hope you are well and thanks again for the comment. Take it easy.

      Hi Falando, I will mention I found the image quality of the 10-18 to be overall better because although the 10-22 would show better clarity in focus it has heavy chromatic aberrations, both lenses could be better because 10-18 can have low contrast sometimes too.

      @TheOtherPhotoGuy  Před rokem +1

      Yes the 10-18 is good for vlogging and also for real estate, because for real estate you stop down to somewhere like F/8 - I did find that the 10-18 gave some unwanted flaring and can slightly wash out the image to soft particularly in the corners. The EF-M 11-22 is similarly suitable for vlog and for real estate as it has a wide enough field of view

      Hey there, the EF-M 11-22 is also quite pricey but wasn’t sure about it not being sharp, I guess this will be to the edges of the frame... the EFS 10-18 is very good for landscape, one thing is it does suffer flaring when sun is in front or off to side, but most wide angles will. A copy of the older 85mm f/1.8 is also a really great lens with a lot of character too but again at 136mm equivalent it is even tighter. You could look for a copy of the EF17-40 f/4L as they can be found relatively cheaply nowadays, but at F/4 you dont quite get the character or background blur in all situations. You could also consider the EF-S 24 f/2.8 pancake lens, it's a bit wider than the 50mm being a 35mm equiv and still quite fast at 2.8, I have no experience with that lens. If you have $$ to burn the EF 16-35 f/2.8 would be fantastic, as would the the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 an amazing lens
