Hey Carole. I lived as a kid on Rutledge St between Marcy ave and Bdwy. Born there in 1954 and left 1967 due to then knocking down all the homes to big a bigger school. I live on Long Island now and my kids are now grown with their own families, but I had to drive them everywhere. Back in Bklyn. All the kids played right in the street. No regrets growing up there. Such great memories. Went to a catholic school called Transfiguration on Marcy and Hooper St.
I visited this area last week "june 22" when we went to peter lugers. We walked around that block and I would like to come back and try some of that kosher food you guys are talking about. What are the things the men are carrying around? Look like a clear box with maybe long stem roses in them or something???
That's what defines a "metropolis" for me: neighborhoods in which you think you're suddenly in another country because people have the opportunity to live their culture relatively unimpaired. I love it. I wish my city had that diversity.
With that definition Tokyo isn't a metropolis though. Since it's 99% Japanese, even though it's the biggest city in the world
Relatively. The reality is that they become like countries with frontiers where strangers are only tolerated. Such is life.
Unfortunately they don't allow diversity in their neighborhoods.
Jewish men are carrying four species of plants for Sukkot around this time of year (October). We can see "Sukkah" built outside the buildings.

I live in London,U.K and Stamford Hill is a bit similar to Williamsburg,although Williamsburg makes a tremendous difference in terms of Satmar community!Again,Crown Heights for me seems more engaging,just wish I could see more women on the street,yes with wigs,in general people say they are not interested but somewhere they are,is a different culture that is very comfortable for them,is their life ,is the mitzvahs,for us even though am reform jew must say is something new,I guess I must try one day how is it, in reality!

8:20 That's the Williamsburg library! I use to go that as a kid. The library was built in 1903 and designed in a classical revival style. Its floorplan is meant to evoke an open book, with two wings radiating from the center atrium.

You walk past a block from my house! This video was shot on "Hoshana Raba" the last day of the Sukoth holiday and one of the holiest in the Jewish calendar. Therefore the streets are so empty.

@Lionel Muggerage Yeah, it's connected to Sukkos / Hoshana Raba. It contains a palm branch, myrtle branches, and willow branches. They probably are also holding a box containing a citron. Based on Leviticus 23:39-43:

@@xomy4 The accepted opinion in this neighborhood is that there has been no new cases in the last two months and masks don't work anyways, so why suffocate for nothing? It is widely believed here that the majority of people who died from the virus where either old age hom residents or patients that were killed in the hospitals due to neglect and starvation.

Here on the left coast, we had yesterday the CicLAvia/Downtown Disney festival, where an 8 mile stretch of street from the Disney Music Hall to parts near the Hollywood Bowl was closed to traffic, allowing cyclists and walkers free rein. A little humid, as monsoonal moisture was present from the south, but still good to be out and about, while testing my Garmin Virb Ultra 30. As always, thanks 105 for the clip.

the wooden structures on the balconies are called Sukkot en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukkah
The structures need to be under the sky, without obstruction of another balcony or trees, many buildings in Williamsburg are built with the Sukkah in mind. 6:50 , 21:23 , 25:00 you can see it

nope, they are called Sukkot (or Sukkah, single), a hut like structure, Jews eat in during the holiday of Sukkot.
An 'Eruv' would be mostly invisible fishline running far above the street.

I didn't go home immediately after this. I did some more walking over the Manhattan Bridge and did a tour of Chinatown also.

After a bit of Googling I'm guessing they are carrying Lulav (palm fronds) or willow branches some of the Four Species for Sukkot en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukkot but I could be wrong of course.
FifthnLicoln is Right, they are carrying the Lulav (palm branch) in a case that protects it.
They are carrying lulav's! The traditional palm branch with myrtle and willow branches are bound together and is used in service prayers during sukkot.

I know that all Hasidic Jews are Orthodox but not all Orthodox Jews are Hasidic. Do they drive cars? Some use mobile phones :) Do they use electricity in their homes?
I am not sure. It really depends on their beliefs. Although I do know that many live a simple lifestyle and firmly follow the law of the Torah.
Orthodox jews do not drive a car on Sabbath or Holiday. on other days, they do use mobile phones and electricity. On Sabbath and Holidays electricity may be used, but not turned on or off, unless done with a timer beforehand.
I just noticed that this video is taken on "Chol Hamoed" (festival weekdays) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chol_HaMoed, where the use of electricity and cars are permitted.

A comment from a native born Williamsburg Brooklyn New Yorker in the late 1950’s and 1960’s these areas all use to be a great majority was of Puerto Rican’s community and orthodox Jewish had small community’s , what a big change , this is why they wanted to take over these neighborhoods ( an all Hasidic Jewish community , mostly all of Williamsburg Brooklyn , NY. 🤦🏽♂️

Its customary to wish each other a "Sweet year" this fish shop is using that message to market their fish. Sign is in Hebrew letters, but in Yiddish language (mostly) wishing their customers a sweet New Year, ready to serve our customers quality fish for the holidays. (roughly translated)

There’s no point in looking at all of williamsburg. Northside is all white while the deep Southside is Jews and puerto ricans
