The younger generation sees this and thinks "wow what's the big deal? he's still alive even." Well, at the time of Magic Johnson announcing this the world knew very little about HIV/AIDS; there were many misconceptions/taboos, and everybody thought Magic would be gone within a year. So for that to happen to a star athlete like Magic was a big deal.
