Hi John. I’m a debilitated, bed-bound 9/11 first responder. I love and miss fishing. I used to fish the Sound and the Atlantic waters off the south shore, roughly the same areas you fish when you’re not down south.
I want to leave this note to thank you for your videos. I’ve been a subscriber for years and I never miss any of them. In part, because I’m so limited physically, I’m living vicariously through your adventures. Again, thank you, John.
Your fan,
LG
Sorry to hear of your condition. Glad the vids help a little. Hope you improve.
THANKS FOR KEEPING US SAFE
God Bless you sir!
Thank you for your service!
Thanks for you're service and all you sacrificed for humanity..May God bless you and your family Sir❤
I'm 69 and been fishing for bass in the san Francisco Bay for 60 years, you guys are lucky on the east coast with all these nice fish, in the early 90s all our big bass disappear, all we catch now is 18-22 inch fish, but the numbers of these small fish have been on the rise lately, but again so far this year all small. Thanks!
Too be honest I think it’s because of the warm water, stripers are more aggressive and spawn in colder waters, that why we have 50+lbs but I don’t know San Fran’s striper regulations on what you can keep. Up in the northeast it’s very strict. But I don’t live there so I could be wrong
@@tristanfaucett3714 the Pacific Ocean is colder than the Atlantic
I'm 47 , I live 20 min from the Cape Cod Canal. Our fish size has also declined from the old days. My father has many pictures with 50" plus stripers, All the old timers do. But , I'm not complaining. We still have many large fish coming through. My best of the year so far is 44"
@@heyjoejp that depends on the area
@tristanfaucett3714 your correct , we have strict regulations on only one keeper a day ( slot fish ) 28" to 31" nothing under or over can be kept by recreational fisherman. I live 20 min from the Cape Cod Canal.
Nice that you are building lasting fishing memories with your brother and include him in your videos. Kudos for that!
I always feel like I’m learning something when I watch one of your videos. Very educational.
Great video which brings back fond memories of my fishing days 60 years ago out at Montauk and in Great South Bay. I do miss that action
Love the amount and quality of info in this one John. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with us!
Hey John , are you gonna get back to surfcast fishing? I can’t afforda boat I love you surfcasting videos the best.
Got my Bimini bay bibs and top, they are really comfortable, light weight and built well. I had ordered a large at 5'9 and 190lbs 34 inch waist and 44 inch chest, and they were huuuge. Sent back for Mediums and the fit was perfect. A little extra room under the jacket for a thick sweater or cold weather clothing! Thanks john!
Always enjoy the tests you do John . Some of my favorites actually. Along with your books I'm always learning something from you and applying it. Got Into stripers again this morning before work. Thanks as always .
Its really neat to watch these episodes. I used to fish the gut in a 13 Whaler when I was a teen, shoot across from the CT river. Older and wiser, I,m glad I have a bigger boat. Lots of great fishing there but when the current and wind run, it’s a snotty place to be. Thank for taking us along.
Gut in 13-ft whaler from CT. You're braver than I am!
@@JohnSkinnerFishing no bravery, just young and stupid. Again, thanks for the great fishing content.
I pursed my lips and nodded along to “fricking hit ya 15 times”😂! Makes me think of me and my buddy sitting there at Deale island watching the rod tip bounce, registering it, and doing nothing…until it’s too late😂. Good times
Thanks John! Great video! My bro is my favorite fishing partner. We fished that same area. Happy hunting grounds. I have to get back there!
Damn it John!! You made me buy another set of fishing bibs and coat!!! LOL!! Keep kickin ass bud!!!!!
Great action! Love your videos! Say hi to brother Bob. I bought his 78 Whaler from him in AR. Living in NC now fishing the Sound.
Wow. I'll let him know I heard from you.
It's great to see what it looks like at 100 ft . great video. I would think any dark color bucktail would work in that visible we are getting weakies this week in seaisle. I'm so glad to see them around this year. I'm waiting for some fluke videos
Love those free sinkers lol
This is very interesting. I use white during the day but both white and red at night
hey john can you do a vid where you also show what your seeing on you sonar? I'm new to fish finders and fishing the sound i don't fish where you do but id love to see what the bottom looks like. I'm also a salt strong sub
hey john if you use a wooden rod to put your camera on and you put a notch a cross the bottom that locks over the dowel pin in the bottom of your rod holder do you think that could help?? maybe that's how you have it already not sure lol i'm sure you know what you are doing lol or have already thought of that lol just a suggestion !! anyway great videos hookem up
Same protocol by Fire Island inlet fluke fishing. Back and forth under the RM bridge. I’m sure you’ve done it
I don’t see the red buoy anywhere, I usually start my drift just west of it and drift over that shallow patch, hard for me to tell where you start but I think I’m starting in the wrong area ? Great work for a busy traffic day. Thanks.
We're not anywhere near a red buoy.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing ok than I’m fishing too close to Plum island, thanks.
Hi , John, as always great video !! do you have a favorite part of the tide to fish the gut??
flood in spring ebb in fall
Have you experimented at all with UV colored jigs? I think i read striped bass can see UV wavelengths, unlike us. Perhaps they'll see a UV painted bucktail down there and get hungry.
Have not. Interesting...
I’ve been tempted to try the UV paint
Always enjoyed your videos
Plz keep them coming
God Bless 🙏🇺🇸
John how far is it from the new dec ramp and the gut.....thanks
Around 13 miles.
I have a suggestion for the skinner jigging rods. I love the ones I have (One of the light ones and one of the heavier ones.) but it would be great if you had the same rod with 3 or 4" removed from the Butt end and marketed them as Kayak versions. I find I have to hold them out just a little too far for comfort when I am sitting in the kayak.
Just cut it whatever length is right for you
@@user-bl8ck5bs2mwith how popular kayak fishing has become, there is a real need for a rod model catered to them. Not a lot of people feel like cutting off and remaking the butt end of their rod, you and I would, but the reality is people would rather spend their money on the “new thing”
What jigging technique is that? Seems like you’d drop to the bottom, crank back up 5-6 times, let it sit at that height, then drop back down and repeat? I myself have never seen that and fished striper my whole life. From the Chesapeake bay
Standard procedure in strong tidal rips such as Plum Gut and the Fishers Island Race, among other places. The current is 2-4 mph, sometimes 5mph+ near the Full and New Moons.
I'm surprised the camera didn't cause the stripers to shy away from biting. How high above the bucktail did you tie your camera?
The camera was around a foot from the lure.
Looks like fun! Tight lines!!
Whats the difference between three waying these bucktails and tying them straight?
This shows the 3-way - czcams.com/video/5vFnK4kgPxY/video.html. The 3-way uses a sinker to get a roughly 1-ounce bucktail down. It's advantage is that you can use heavy sinkers.
What camera is this?
They don't make it anymore, but this looks similar. amzn.to/4bSpWX5
are those downeast boats drifting from the stern retherm than side drifting? are the stemming the tide to slow the drift speed that way? thanks
They were just drifting. Sometimes they'll power drift if the current is too slow, but not on this video.
No jigging required
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks
This is a very happy working day for you
John, Thank you for the Bimini Bay link. I bought and set and love them. Pleasantly surprised at the quality.
Yep. I feel like I live in those things sometimes. Very comfortable.
I've read that fish switch from rod to cone vision depending on the time of day/available light. do you think these fish are avoiding the mid column water due to the fact that they are hunkered down on the bottom in zero light and have switched to low light vision?
They hug the bottom for the most part because the irregular bottom structure breaks the current.
Have you tried this technique with gulp?? Or are striped bass less likely to hit gulp
I never use Gulp for stripers, as it is not needed.
Always wine bucktails at night for me. So dedicated, it becomes the joke among my friends. 🤷🏻♂️
Do you see a big difference in the fishing between the incoming and outgoing tide at plum gut?
Incoming in spring, outgoing in fall.
Fishing off Naples has been hot. Literally and figuratively lol.
What reel is in the thumbnail?
I'm surprised only size ounces to hold there?
6 ounces using 30# braid.
wow lots of boat traffic
You said the fish were biting in the deeper water with lower visibility. Maybe the color didnt matter since the fish were fishing the lures with feel instead of vision.
Stripers use their lateral line to feed. Proof is that we can bucktail these fish in that water on a moonless night.
Interesting that color didn't seem to matter on this trip but gulp color seems to matter when deep water fluke fishing, even in 80+ feet of water. Perhaps the fish can see better than the underwater camera in very low light conditions? Good stuff but need more data.
It depends on water clarity.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing very true. The water clarity didn't look too bad in your video. Have you captured deep water video where color was perceivable beyond 80 ft?
What’s the camera company
It's not sold anymore, but this looks similar or better. amzn.to/3z0vNLh
Waves at the ten minute mark makes me wish you were wearing a PFD! Another good video however.
I thought I was listening to a Howard Stern fishing podcast. ;)
What state do you live in that I sound like Howard Stern? I've been told this before, but I don't sound anything like him. I'm thinking it's a regional thing.
West coast. I’m not a big Howard Stern fan, but I think you sound a lot like him. We have Stripers out here, apparently imported back in the 1800’s or early 1900’s from the East coast. They are well established here, unfortunately to the detriment of the salmon and steelhead populations. But, they are here to stay. A buddy of mine guides for Stripers on the Sacramento and Feather Rivers. The Stripers are usually full of salmon smolt. Between drought years, poor water management (too much demand, not enough water), and predation, the salmon populations have plumeted, and we can no longer fish for Chinook salmon.
I am looking forward to fishing the East coast for Stripers someday.
Thanks for the response! I always thought the comments were coming from the South, and maybe most do. Howard Stern is from western LI, I'm from eastern LI. To someone here we would sound quite a bit different. Yes, a very cool history to how those stripers made it to your coast!
John, do you find a darker color or glow works better for deep water fluke as well??
I usually use glow bucktails for fluke, but I don't know that it makes any difference.
