I’ve always known Tool, but never truly… listened. And then about two weeks ago I saw the drum cam video of Danny Carey playing Pneuma. That blew my mind. So I decided to take a listen to the song Pneuma from the album… I literally cried. I called my brother who has been a fan since the 90s and asked, “Is this normal?” He said, “YES! That’s Tool!” Now I’m addicted. Enjoy the experience of discovery 😉
Welcome to the TooL Army my friend🙂 I've been a member since '94 and yes... crying is a normal reaction to some of their songs depending on your phase of enlightenment. I still cry when I listen to Wings for Marie/10,000 Days. The more you listen, the more you'll hear the little nuances they use to evoke feelings in the listener. It helps to read up on Carl Jung, Esotericism, Neoplatonics, Gnosticism, and astrology but its not necessary to enjoy it. Glad you awakened, enjoy the Spiral and let it go.
Like you, I knew about Tool but never listened enough to see their absolute talent and perfection. COVID led me spiraling down the rabbit hole, and now they are my all time favorite band/experience. I believe Danny’s drum cam was my gateway drug as well.
I see them live next month. Couldn’t be more excited.
Also, hello from another Berg/Burg!
Welcome to the Tool Army.. enjoy the ride. Spiral out 🙏
I, like your bro, have been a fan since the 90's,
in the late 90's I had heard Undertow but only once and was kind of neutral on them, I liked Sober which I had heard a lot, got a lot of MTV/Radio play.
I remember borrowing a cassette tape of Aenima.
1st listen, "hmm that was quite good"
after a couple of listens "actually I like this"
By the end of the week it was "hmm I think that might be the greatest album of all time?"
It takes time to really grow with a person. I genuinely think their albums take time to settle, even if you are a fan, but when they do...f*cking hell it hits home.
And BTW I still think Aenima is the best album ever made, its not as technical as the 3 that follow it, but there is a vibe on that album that is special, and I think its less contrived than Lateralus, 10'000 Days or Fear Innoculum. Despite me playing down its complexity its still very complex at times, and for me was the start of what the world now knows as Tool.
Undertow and Opiate are quite different, to the point where its almost another band (almost, tracks like Swampsong were in the future format to some degree, but they had a different bassist and I think Justin joining was the final piece, he joined just before Aenima)
@@jacksmith4460 Yeah, same here. Had to just hit me at the right time. I have always liked the radio hits. And I actually owned the Aenema cd, but only played it a couple times. I was in a different place back then. I do remember seeing the Sober video for the first time. Back when MTV only played it on Head Banger’s Ball. So creepy… I’ve always been a big NiN fan, and I suppose they fit in the same category musically but this has started to hit me at a whole new level. I agree, Aenima is a great album. I listened to it earlier today again.
As a fan of TOOL for 30+ years. ......I thank you for your reaction. I could tell you were really feeling it.
Rock on!
I'm in the same boat! Been a fan for 30 plus years and I still get amazed every time I hear them!
we can restore our first “tool trip” watching this video.thanks dude.
My favorite thing about this song is that it's literally about exposing yourself to new things and new experiences. So by listening to the song for the first time, you are very much living out the very essence of the song... which is pretty dope.
Elite
As a Tool fan, this is such a Tool fan comment
Don't ever apologize for going back to replay parts of Tool songs. There was a collective smile when you did that as we remembered the countless times we've done the same. Cheers!
Reaction videos are like a drug. You get a little piece of that first time you heard the music and it takes you back
Now this song truly is "math rock". :D They play around the Fibonacci sequense alot on this one. As well with some time signatures...
That intro before the first heavy hit is 01;12 long.
And the syllables kind of follow the Fibonacci sequense up and down:
Black (1)
then (1)
white are (2)
all I see (3)
in my infancy (5)
Red and yellow then came to be, (8)
reaching out to me (5)
Lets me see (3)
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine (13)
Drawn beyond the lines of reason (8)
Push the envelope, (5)
watch it bend (3)
And then in the next time it changes:
Black (1)
then (1)
white are (2)
all I see (3)
in my infancy (5)
Red and yellow then came to be, (8)
reaching out to me (5)
Lets me see (3)
There is so much more (And) beckons me to look through to these infinite possibilities (21)
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine (13)
Drawn outside the lines of reason (8)
Push the envelope, (5)
watch it bend (3)
And finally a quote from Wikipedia:
The time signatures of the chorus of the song change from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8; as drummer Danny Carey says, "It was originally titled 9-8-7. For the time signatures. Then it turned out that 987 was the 16th number of the Fibonacci sequence. So that was cool."
This blows people's minds.
@@TheClayCoKid Well .. Tool does that. :D
I'm not saying you're wrong with your 21 count, but
There is 2
So 1
Much 1
More and 2
Beckons me 3
To look through to these 5
Infinite possibilities 8
Great reaction man! No distractions, focus on the music.
Every Tool song is better than every other Tool Song.
If that's how the loop goes then I'll put rosetta stoned at the end of the loop 😁
A true Tool fan will give you a different answer when asked the question of what his favourite Tool song is and it makes no difference how many times you ask!
The best Tool song is whichever you happen to be listening to at the time.
I love watching Tool fans being born again and again. Never gets old. Thank you for sharing, thank you Tool for over 25 years of untouchable, mystical, musical bliss.
8:23 I saw this coming, and still it evoked a rush of emotion when you "whoooo!". I don't have the words to express how a tool song makes me feel sometimes, but visually seeing someone get that hit the first time is absolutely The Good Stuff. I indecently envy the discoveries before you my dude.
Almost as if you were living vicariously through his eyes… 😉
He's only finger deep inside the borderline
46&2 or Stinkfist might be good next options on your Tool journey as it begins!
The moment you layed your head back on the chair is the moment you felt the spiral! Welcome my friend to Tool, you are not alone and always welcome.
I've always loved the lyrics to this one. It feels like you can be successful at anything, AS LONG as you KEEP GOING!
"Parabol/Parabola" ! Technically, two separate songs, but should be listened to as one. Amazing... highly recommend the official video as well (guitarist Adam Jones does the stop-motion claymation, this band is a many faceted force of nature)! Peace out, man
The panning of the Toms on this track is perfect, the sound engineer knows wtf they're doin behind a mixing board....I mean, if you close your eyes and listen thru headphones, it's like you're sitting behind a drum kit....this is my absolute favorite track Tool has recorded, it's extraordinary.....
TOOL songs are like mushroom trips. Magical, terrifying at moments, mind expanding, hard to fully decipher, and stick with you for your entire life.
I can’t really recommend you another tool song, because it doesn’t matter which one you pick. They’re all good
Exactly
Any given day, any Tool song can be my favorite - except The Pot. I’ve never been able to get into that one.
@@johngilbanni6385 i love "the Pot"
however , Vicarious, Ticks & Leeches these 2 I dont like
Vivarious - i just dont like it, the whole track
Ticks and Leeches, the riffs, drums etc are all great, I just cant stand MJK's vocals on that one, just seems really ...well immature, its odd because I love "Hooker with a penis" which is a similar type of track, but feels more mature in a strange way even though it was made several years prior?
But yeh 99% of Tool tracks...will hit the spot
@@jacksmith4460 he is mirroring the scum of the scum. It's meant to make you feel uneasy cuz the people he's mirroring make one feel uneasy :)
And that’s real fact. Even the ones that don’t hit you right away, end up becoming your favs. It’s insane and like no other journey. I’m still on that path and I’ve been listening to the since the early 90’s.
Man I love seeing new Tool fans be born right before my eyes man
I know right! They made a song about their fans watching this stuff.
Great reaction, I love watching people experiencing TOOL. Every song is a masterpiece and somehow tops all others. A great sequel would be reacting to Intension and Right in Two, from the 10,000 days album. The message is powerful and relevant even today, and its just plain awesome
I agree
Me too. It’s exactly why I’m here. I can’t listen to them for the first time again. I love watching people hear them for the first time. ESP. Jambi.
I've been a fan of this band for over 30 years. To this day my favorite song of theirs is the one I just listened to. There is no equal on this planet.
I love your reaction all your videos keep them coming
i will bro thx and love you all
Epic song. It's near impossible to find a bad Tool song.
Tool:
VIcarious
The Grudge
Push It (Live from the DVD "Saliva"
Pneuma (Live Drum Cam with Daney Carey"
Parbola - Parabola (2 songs that make one song)
Right In Two
Ticks & Leeches
Schism
Third Eye
Rosetta Stoned
No sorry your not a tool. Fan
Nice list...
I have loved TOOL for years. Their first EP was even amazing (OPIATE). Have you ever listened to A Perfect Circle? It's Maynard's other band...you may like them too. 😁
I am OGT, back from '92, off the first EP. (sips Coke)
good call. And don't forget Puscifer.
Judith
Magdalena
Vicarious and Parabola are good TOOL songs to check out too
Fuckit then…Let’s get weird.
Lost Keys & Rosetta Stoned - played together
Other tracks to be played together as 1 comprehensive track are:
Parabol & Parabola
Wings For Marie pt 1 & 2 (10,000 Days)
Disposition & Reflection & Triad (commonly called The Holy Trinity)
Enjoy 😎
All four are talented and intelligent delivering their own mastery in each song. Fan for over 30 years, love them live as much as recorded. It’s an experience that never goes away as it gets you right in the guts!!! 🧡🖤
ÆNIMA is another masterpiece. Whenever you get a chance, this album always gets overlooked by fellow reactors but listen to their unreleased Salival album. It’s only on CZcams.
More than 20 years since it's release and this song is still considered the best and most influential metal song of the 21st century and yet it isn't even metal
Yeah, I definitely wouldn’t call it the most influential metal song of the 21st century. It’s a great song. No doubt about it, but they aren’t metal like you said and I feel like Tool are they’re own thing. How many songs from other bands actually sound similar to this? They definitely have influenced some bands, but they are far from the most influential. I kinda prefer it that way to be honest.
I LOVE seeing Tool fans being born!!!!
Tool is one of the best bands ever and Maynard is one hell of a front man! You can't forget a perfect circle, or puscifer! So much music, you have opened up Pandora's box brother and you are going to enjoy it!
"Is all their songs like this where they build it up?" Not all of them, some of their older stuff isn't as varied, but one of the hallmarks of Tool is definitely their rhythm changes, and the way they play with the minimalistic and build up into those complex, intense, and almost jarring moments that can literally change your life. I love how they do it with every instrument, including Maynard's voice. It's all done masterfully.
Tool was my favorite band for a long time, but even though I listened to them every day I didn't fully understand the music because I was more focused on the sound than the lyrics. Now, after getting older, I've come to realize that I wasn't ready at the time to really listen to and analyze their lyrics like I used to do with other bands and rappers. Much like a psychedelic experience, their music can literally be a Tool to expand your consciousness and self awareness, and that's something you have to be prepared for. I feel like now, more than ever, I gain some insight from their music every time I hear it.
This is why they're one of the greatest bands to ever exist, and why fans so fiercely recommend them. When people are in tune with the music it's like watching them trip out, and it brings the viewer as much joy as the first time listener. I've been judged for being a Tool fan in the past, but only by people who have never really listened to them, so to see all sorts of different people from different musical backgrounds react to, and enjoy, them is a great feeling of validation. I've always believed that there's something for everybody in their music, whether you're ready to hear it or not is the only question.
That’s how you enjoy TOOL, headphones on and getting lost in the music! Excellent reaction!👍
Song recommendation: Invincible, Third Eye, Right in Two, The Patient
~Push It~ from Aenima. It changed my young life forever in a good way.
Tool army assemble!
Spiral out! Keep going!
Keep the Tool coming! Spiral out!
Keep up the nice reactions. Being a that i'm a little older i tend to forget that some of the younger generation has not necessarily gotten around to listening to older music yet. It's fun watching people discover something new and different and enjoy it at the same time! Cheers 🍻
I once had a DVD of a bunch of tool Videos and I cherished that thing. I don't honestly know if I still have it 20 years later. Can't think of when it would've gotten into a de clutter box. So I think it disappeared during my divorce when a home got abandoned while I was deployed. I loved and still love Tool. I think I watch all of these tool reaction vids from a ton of creators. Never seen a bad reaction.
MUCH RESPECT FOR YOU.... I literally went down that road with you. And I've been listening to TOOL for 20 years. It's not the music. It's the experience. Like taking shrooms. Different every time.
Been listening to them for 25+ years. I still go back re-listen a part..... many times.... And it always feels like the first time listening. Watching ur vid the feeling is still like my first time listening.... i love them. Their music helped and is still helping me.
If you are still looking for live Tool, this is the best song out there. Note that this version is different from the album version. Pushit: czcams.com/video/EgDwkSlCwHw/video.html
agree 1000%
Tool army ASSSEMMMMBLLLLLLLLLLLLLE
Bruh, I'm subscribed. It's a pleasure to watch another Tool fan be born. Seriously, Tool reaction videos are the best part of the internet.
Maybe not an early tool song or songs to start with, but unlike this that puts you in trance, Wings for Marie and 10,000 days together (As it two parts of the same) will pull every raw emotion buried deep into the forefront. It's a rollercoaster of emotions. I cry like a baby every time.
Great Vid! One of Maynerd's other bands, A Perfect Circle is amazing too. Try 3 Libras. I think you'll like it very much. ty
I remember driving with my father and it was once in a blue moon where he wouldn’t play tool. Couldn’t thank him enough for showing me them at such a young age. Tool is by far one of the best bands to put out music. Every song is an emotion I can’t put in words. Check out schism!
Tool actually does a cover of a little known, hugely influential band, Kyuss. Listen to Kyuss. Not going to hear it often, but heed these words! KYUSS!!!
Kyuss really do need more reacting too. Green machine or thumb 👍
I could spend all day just listening to Tool and Radiohead reactions so different yet weirdly alike. Very intricate with a lot of tempo and odd changes.
Welcome to TOOL! Watch your life change for the better, if you allow it 🛠🤘🏼🌀
PS: May I suggest …
Vicarious
The Grudge
H
Schism
The patient
Heck…. Any of their songs will do 💫
Literally just watched my dude spiral out. Congratulations. Welcome
1:50 YEEEAAAYYY, that's the way, close the eyes and enjoy the ride. One of my favorite ways to do it, you'll get in a trance!
10:46 😂😂😂😂😂😂 I just got to this point. EXACTLY WHAT I SAID IN PREVIOUS REPLY😂😂😂😂😂😂💯
Tool-Sober....one of their best very very powerful song.
Parabol/Parabola
Vicarious
The Grudge
Invincible
Literally any song is their best song... Just go in order honestly and do them all.
Awesome reactions btw. Welcome to the army.
Told ya you would love the lyrics 🔥
Always a joy to see someone “feel inspired, feel the rhythm, bathe in the fountain) for the first time
This, Pneuma and Aenima are my 3 favorite Tool songs ever, but you kind of can't miss with any of their songs all depends on your emotional setting at the time IMO, I kinda feel like this is how music works with our brains in general, it's just that every person can have a different way of processing specific songs, and certain music might have different effects on different people in different emotional settings, one person might like a Hardcore or Metal song when they are *actually* angry, while someone else might prefer it when they're calm and relaxed (AKA we're all unique and things effect each of us uniquely, including music).
One of the very few artists that legitimately have MULTIPLE (if not all) "no skip" albums in my opinion, and there have been so many times I've gone back to a song I didn't care for when I was younger, but after....spiraling out a bit further in my life to new perspectives, I listened again...and wondered...wtf was wrong with past me to not see how amazing the song was back when I first heard it.
Great reaction man!
Parabola. Love watching people hear Tool for the first time! Enjoy sir!
Please watch sober - the live version. Maynard leaves a little piece of his soul onstage during every performance. The power and the clarity he has singing from a hunched position is like nothing you have ever heard
the grudge , Jambi , vicarious , eulogy , sober , prison sex , opiate ..... lots of great songs by Tool .
It's a beautiful thing. Tool is an experience. Welcome to the club. Spiral out..keep going!
Ps- your reaction is also a beautiful thing. You have great energy!
Yo my guy, I live down the road from you in Mobile. Welcome to the TOOL army. I've listened to them since '94. TOOL's a journey, have fun and all the best.
Roll a spliff and I promise you this transports you to another plane of existence...not even joking. Great reaction, loving the content bro.
Welcome to the Tool army!!
Transplants - Diamonds & Guns 🫂🤘
Love watching new Tool fans "spiral" out!
They are my fav band! Not only the deep subject matter. The vocals and layers of the song. Every song is a trip!!
They used the Fibonacci sequence extensively in this song. It’s in the lyrics, guitars, drums, chords, etc. 123 321. Black then white, all I see, in my infancy. It’s a very mathematical song. Then you delve into the lyrics and the meaning. A lot of Maynard’s lyrics across his 3 bands all are about the stages of life and all the problems he’s had, being born, growing up, drugs, sobriety, relapse, his mothers death, etc. they’re not superficial or just meant to sound good, but give little snippets of his life if you pay attention. Maynard is truly one of the greatest artists ever.
The grudge, Descending, 46&2, push it,
Fun fact- Any TOOL fan can throw together any mix of TOOL songs and it would be enjoyed by every other TOOL fan 💯
Watching people's reaction to Tool is actually quite emotional!! It's great to see these 1st reaction videos.
Tool have been a part of my life from the first time I heard them back in the 90's. All songs are as awesome and relevant now as they were/have been.
Patient is my personal favourite, but it's almost like choosing a favourite child!!
This is THE most talented musical group on the planet, and it's not even close
Tool will boost your subs automatically. Auto thumbs up
Congratulations on your very first out-spiraling. May you have many more #ToolArmy
Have not seen Sober live in your videos or have I overlooked it. And welcome to the Tool Army.
Don't overthink or overanalyze. We're humans with perfect animal instincts. Keep your wits keen and your instincts sharp, or life will spit you out before you have a chance to break through.
Great tool songs - 46&2, sober, aenima, vicarious, jambi, pneuma, invincible and for a real hit in the feels "wings for Marie" and "10,000 days". The last two need to be listened to in that order. Another band, same singer a perfect circle - judith
don't forget Puscifer!
How bout Reflections? Parabol? Parabola? Lost keys/rosetta stoned?
Check out Tool's song The Pot. It's an amazingly written and of course beautifully sang by the greatest vocalist of our time in my opinion, the great Maynard James Keenan!
Was gonna sub... but realized I already was. More tool, please. Also, more commentary. I know it's tough with a new tool song. It always takes me a few listens, at least, before I could get a grip on new tool.
spiral out! "the grudge" is a good one Maynard does a sick 25 second scream
I've been a fan since I was a teenager! Each time I listen, I reach a different perspective. Their music has saved my life so many times. 🖤
Jambi is a MUST!!!!!
Every snare hit is life. One love bro.
I recommend listening to this and with an explanation of how the fibonacci sequenced is used in this song.
Tool is brilliant as you have experienced. If you listen from the very first album, you may hear the anger, then this album is reflection and their last album is enlightenment.
A song I would recommend is 'Reflection'.
The Lead Singer, Maynard, has 2 other bands, A Perfect Circle & Puscifer. And I would recommend the whole album 'Thirteen Steps' by A Perfect Circle, as each song is about the steps of Rehab. Listening to every song in that album, let their Lyrics & Vocals paint you a movie of Perspective.
I would suggest listeing to Pink Floyd No Quarter and then listen to TOOLS version its so different but just as good!
He said "Viva Messenger"😂🤣😂
I don’t know that I can really come up with top tool songs because I love them all so much 😆 but I guess check out Sober, Ænema, eulogy, undertow, prison sex, the grudge, schism, right in two, pneuma, vicarious, fear inoculum, stinkfist….I can’t stop so I will stop there.
PS you have really beautiful hair ❤️
Black and a white is all I see……how do you see things now??? LOL! Glad you have discovered Tool Brother! Welcome 🤗
I always feel like I need to wear a seatbelt when I listen to Tool.
I suggest Aenema with the lyrics. Crazy how they wrote it almost 30 years ago and it rings more true today than ever!
Tool has a tribal feel to it with a metal interlude of surprise.
Haha long time Tool addict here. I didn't see your reaction as my eyes were inevitably closed as I headbanged 😅 take my like and sub
Always happy to see new fan been a fan since the 90s i think good next one would be danny Carey drum cam pneuma see why they call him the 🐙🐙,jambi, pushit also 2 awesome songs You should give a listen to you won't be disappointed..✌️👽
Tool. Has kept me sane in my world. Estrangement is hard.
Have Tool live in a van with a shit ton of Schrooms in the desert. AMAZING
Once you open up to the genius of Maynard & his lyrical mastery you're hooked.
Copied from Wiki:
The syllables Maynard sings in the first verse follow the first six numbers in the pattern, ascending and descending in the sequence 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3.
Black (1)
then (1)
white are (2)
all I see (3)
in my infancy (5)
red and yellow then came to be (8)
reaching out to me (5)
Lets me see (3)
In the next verse, Maynard begins with the seventh number of the Fibonacci sequence (13), implying a missing verse in between. He descends back down with the following pattern; 13-8-5-3.
As below so above and beyond I imagine (13)
Drawn beyond the lines of reason (8)
Push the envelope (5)
Watch it bend (3)
The second verse adds the missing line to complete the sequence;
There is (2)
so (1)
much (1)
more that (2)
beckons me (3)
to look through to these (5)
infinite possibilities (8)
1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3-2-1-1-2-3-5-8-13-8-5-3
THE GRUDGE!!!!!!!!
That lyrical beat..1,1,2,3,5,8 Im in my 40s and listened to Tool here and there, but got hooked when my son pointed out the freaking Fibonnaci sequence in this track.
The first time I listened to this song alone and uninterrupted, I cried. You should check out Parabol/Parabola next it will make you feel AlIIIIIIIIIIVE...............
Good vibes,
Peace friend!
🤘🇨🇦✌️
Spiral Out. Keep going. A journey you have begun.
You may enjoy Mastodon too, amazing band and one of my all time favorites...
Definitely need to check out A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, too. I would definitely recommend getting 'lifted' and listening to 'Green Valley' by Puscifer.
I'd love to see you do their whole discography. It's only 5 records and 1 EP, but its a hell of a journey 🌀✌️
Welcome to the rabbit hole, see you on the spiral! Maybe you should check out “The Grudge” or “Parabol\Parabola” next - there is no wrong song to choose “Jambi “ is another fine choice.
"starting kind of slow.." Haha just wait dude...just wait....Heaven is coming to your ears :-)
