In honour of saxophonist Tony Peters

In de jaren 80 zag ik Tony optreden. Ik speelde toen net saxofoon en had les op de muziekschool. Jee, zoals Tony speelde…. dat wilde ik ook! Met mijn vriend destijds en bassist van die avond, Marcel Schimscheimer, ben ik de volgende dag naar Tony gegaan om kennis te maken met de vraag of ik les kon hebben. En zo geschiedde het.
Door Tony ben ik mede gevormd in mijn manier van saxofoon spelen. Spelen in het nu. Ofwel het vrije spelen, vooral niet jezelf herhalen of ingestudeerde licks spelen. Als muzikant ben je vooral ook kunstenaar, vinden wij.
Vanwege mijn verhuizing zijn we elkaar lange tijd uit het oog verloren. De laatste jaren zochten we elkaar weer op, als maten, met centraal de liefde voor de saxofoon. En ook in deze periode heb ik veel aan zijn input als leraar gehad. Hij ging tot het uiterste. Dank Tony.

I saw Tony perform in the 80s. I was just started playing the saxophone at that time and taking lessons at musicschool. Wow, the way Tony played…. I wanted that too!
The next day I went with my friend at the time and the bassist of that night, Marcel Schimscheimer, to Tony's place, asking for saxophone-lessons. And so it happened.
Because of Tony I was formed a great deal in the way I play. Playing in the the now. Not repeating yourself or playing rehearsed licks. As a musician you are above all an artist.
Because I moved we lost sight of each other for a long time. In the past years we met regularly again, as mates, central stood the love for the saxophone. And even during this time I learned a lot from Tony as a teacher. He always digged very deep into it. Thanks Tony.
