    I'll never understand why Disney didn't make Walter a more central part of the Muppets after this. I understand the legacy characters will always be the main stars...but Walter represented the audience rediscovering their love for the muppets.

      I'm with you. It's weird to not make him at least part of the core gang. Being pushed to the background felt like such an odd choice when you put so much work into establishing the character in this film and making him the surrogate for the audience. It's a real bummer.

      It's simple as this, what do you do with Walter? Now that he's part of the muppets what's his big thing? Perhaps if he was in the 2015 show, he'd still have a place around. But the only way I see him being incorporated would be by replacing another character with him.

    The 2011 film was my introduction to the Muppets. I had seen Muppets Take Manhattan, but I didn’t get the humor because I was only in elementary school. By 2011, I was 10, and the jokes in the new film finally hit. I’ve been a fan ever since, but after watching the first few seasons of The Muppet Show on Disney Plus, I’ve felt that before and since the 2011 film, Disney hasn’t handled the Muppets in a way respectful to the franchise’s original tone. Muppets Most Wanted, the 2015 series, Muppets Now and Haunted Mansion stick out particularly well in that regard.

That show had a ton of potential and did often push the boundaries of what we expected Muppets to be allowed to do. Not to mention they could easily put the original Muppet Babies on D+ as they fully own Lucasfilm and Fox now, so they would be able to include all of the Star Wars and Indy dream sequences.

    As much as I love "Muppets Most Wanted"...I do agree that the emotional stakes are way weaker than "The Muppets (2011)", because Jason Segel's involvement in the script made the movie have way more emotional stakes and heart in a lot of its moments while maintaining that silly charm The Muppets are known for. 2 examples are when Kermit sings "Pictures In My Head", and when Gary and Walter sing "Man Or Muppet?" in my favourite movie duet ever. "Man Or Muppet" specifically was so good, that it was deemed Oscar worthy by the academy and actually won. I'm not joking. "The Muppets (2011)", isn't just heartfelt but also extremely funny. One scene that comes to mind for me is when Kristen Schaal (Mabel from Gravity Falls) and Jack Black start a fight with each other after Jack Black punches Gary in the face after saying "Drum", since he didn't know it was his trigger word, and then Mabel comes in saying "Jack...we talked about this on Tuesday", only for him to respond saying "TUESDAY IS ANOTHER ONE OF MY TRIGGER WORDS" about to assault Mabel XD, but then misses only for her to punch him in the face. Based movie. I love the 2011 Muppets so much.

    • @ModernMouse

      The fact that Bret McKenzie won an Oscar for "Man or Muppet" but hasn't really been recognized as a brilliant musician outside of it is crazy. The Flight of the Conchords is such a good comedy act. He's probably the best comedy songwriter of our time, even more so than Bo Burnham.

    A lot of new muppets production try to make references to past shows and movies, mostly by having films about "getting the crew back together" and having actual lore that all these muppets are themselves actors that you get to see behind the scenes.
    I think what the muppets might need is a "reset", so to speak. Professor Bunsen has made a sort of time machine in an alternative timeline and the muppets enter this world from the seventies. just straight up a fifty years jump. None of the drama, maybe use mostly well known named muppets, but remake everything new. and then just let it develop from there.
    No retooling with new girlfriends, no trying to rejuvenate the running gags that don't work because it's been 20 years since we last saw that joke, no nostalgia bait. Just make it actually something new and sincere.
    Because underneath all the jokes and bits, that's what the muppets are supposed to be: Sincere. the romantic tension between Piggy and kermit is sincere, the desire to make the show work is sincere, and when Jim Henson died, they told a very sincere story about why they (the muppets, not just the muppeteers) wanted to keep the show going. The same sincerity is also why having the muppets as a guest in a talkshow works.
    I miss the sincerity of the muppets, it all feels like it's made with a goal in mind of "it needs to make this much money or else we will cancel it, and we will make anything at all that could make us that much money". Especially when that has been proven to be right several times...

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  Před rokem

      I agree that sincerity is a major part of who the Muppets are. I wouldn't mind somewhat of a soft reset in order to make the characters feel more like that. I think it's one of the reasons that Sesame Street has endured as long as it has without really needing to break that 4th wall, at least not in canon.

    Jason Segel really did revive the Muppets with this movie. He brought credibility and he brought authenticity back to the gang. He was absolutely amazing and I thank him for that.
    As far as I am concerned, I don't believe the whole notion that Disney had no clue what to do with them. It all has to do with the Muppet Studio execs making horribly bad decisions. Not bringing back Jason Segal for the 2014 film, the indecisive writing differences for the Muppets TV show, firing Steve Whitmire, Muppets Now being a complete flop, and rejecting Josh Gad's script about a sequel to the Muppets Take Manhattan. I think if they would have made Steve Whitmire a head executive at the Muppets Studio, Disney would have been able to right the ship that is the Muppets. I'm kinda shocked they haven't sold the Muppets off to a company that may have better ideas and how to carry them out.

    I did not grow up with The Muppets. I knew Sesame Street, sure. But The Muppets was a total game changer for me. I was introduced to the '70s show only a week after I had suddenly lost my mom at 15. I devoured the DVDs my pastor let me borrow. It brought great comfort in a time when I felt so very lost and alone. Since then almost 13 years later, I have certainly become a Henson admirer. The 2011 movie was a treat to experience as a recent fan back then. Though, I definitely think Jim, if he were still around, would have been disappointed in the deal he was trying to work out with Disney (just before he passed. It was extremely stressful as he wasn't a dealer, he was an artist. And Eisner and Disney just kept pushing for a better deal even after Jim died, until they finally reached an agreement in 2004. It was a legal nightmare). How Disney just keeps the Muppets on a ventilator, only pulling them out when they feel like it. Disney isn't protecting Henson's characters like he hoped they would. There's no spark left, unless a team like Segel had shows up again, and knows what to do and how to do it. I certainly feel cheated, to say the least.
    I mean for crying out loud there are only 3 seasons of The Muppet show on DVD, out of 5 seasons! Do us the very minimal effort, Disney, and give us at least the remaining 2 seasons in DVD format. They owe us that much. I'm sorry for the rant, as you can tell I have very strong opinions on the matter...oops. But as you said, the Muppets were catching lighting in a bottle in 2011. The team worked wonders on bringing it to life. It will always be a favorite of mine and one that I return to frequently, just like the show.

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  Před rokem +1

      Thank you for sharing your personal story. I'm glad Jim Henson's creations could bring you some happiness in a time of need. As for him, had he not died, Disney would have purchased the company, but also got him too. I have no doubt that they would have let Jim do whatever he wanted, especially under the Michael Eisner and Frank Wells era of Disney. It's a shame that the buyout years later came without a "leader" for the Muppets. They really need someone, like a Jason Segel, to stand up for them. I'm glad that other Henson creations like Sesame Street and the Fraggles aren't a Disney property. At least those things can still really thrive, but the Muppets are what represent Henson most so it would be nice to see something come from Disney.

      Brian Henson worked on Muppets Haunted Mansion. He came in to puppeteer some of his old characters. I think there is this presumption that he and Disney have beef and it doesn't exist. He just hasn't been approached to do anything or wasn't interested in projects. I think you could easily get Brian Henson to come in and do something if you pitched the right story to him and gave him the director's chair.

    This may be an unpopular opinion, but I liked Muppets Most Wanted.

    Ralph is such a good Muppet character. He’s just such a GOAT.

    The key things that keeps getting mentioned is trying to fit them into a formula. Trying to only make money. What made Segel’s movie work is he genuinely loved The Muppets. Not the money they could make, and not trying to make a story formula work. His movie was made with love for the characters. That mark is what becomes missing from all other endeavors. They look at dollar signs, and that is it.

      I think it's slightly more complicated than that. You aren't wrong though! Money is a huge motivating factor when it shouldn't be. Something that even Walt Disney disagreed with is making art only for money. I think the struggle for the Muppets comes with tone. the Segel made film set a certain tone that the projects that followed it didn't match...so they didn't work. The Muppets have had several different tones though. The original show isn't anything like Muppet Treasure Island. Treasure Island doesn't feel like Muppets Tonight. Muppets Tonight doesn't feel like the Segel movie.

    I'm telling you, they had NO RIGHT to make that song SO GOOD. You know which one.

      I thought of nearly every song on the soundtrack and the answer to all of them is yes.

    Notice the moment from The Muppets where Sweetums is running after them? That was a joke on The Muppet Movie, where they redid the scene where he worked before he became part of the gang.

    With the ABC’s Muppets of 2015 it was a 50/50 coin toss that it could have really taken off in the second season, the first had a decent sized audience. Not enough to be highest rating but it was doing decent for it’s time, the issue was that someone new was put in charge and began canceling any shows that weren’t highest rating and not under their name.

    This movie gave NZ an Emmy that wasn’t best VFX.

      Eventually that group of NZ comedians would get some awards. Bret McKenzie, Jemaine Clement, Rhys Darby, and Taika Waititi are some of the best minds in comedy and storytelling that we have.

    You know what Disney needs to do? Muppet remakes of classic films that Disney now owns. They need to treat Muppets as a medium, a lens through which a story can be told. There have been enough stories told about Muppets, let's tell some stories with Muppets. Treasure Island and Christmas Carol were hits, and they own the largest IP library in the world to choose from.
    Cast Away, Home Alone, Star Wars, Hello Dolly, THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, The Sound of Music, Young Frankenstein, all the classic Disney animated features, Indiana Jones, THE PRINCESS BRIDE, Miracle on 34th Street, Mrs. Doubtfire, The Waterboy, The King and I, That Thing You Do, Titanic, 9 to 5, Evita, the list goes on!
    I recognize that some of those may not end up with hits, but I would absolutely see quite a few of them succeeding in the Muppet Remake format.
