But I remember the Metal magazines of the 1980s. Circus, RIP, Metal Edge, Rock Beat and even Rolling Stone rarely, if ever, mentioned Izzy. It was the same on MTV.

Slash is just unreal. He’s so great at phrasing, building tension, working towards that explosive FIRE crescendo, etc. Amazing.
Add to that his tone and how it sits in the mix. He uses the bass pickup to start to create that “full & round” sound, then switches to the treble pickup and gets that amazing, cutting tone. Just brilliant.
Sweet Child, Paradise City, and Welcome to the Jungle are all from the same album “Appetite for Destruction” (1987; their first album & the best-selling debut album of all time) & November Rain is from the album “Use Your Illusion I” (1991).

The best song you almost never heard. Welcome to the Jungle was released as a single in 1987 and MTV/radio blacklisted GNR. About a year later Geffin Records had stopped promoting the album completely when GNRs manager begged David Geffin to call in a favor at MTV. They agreed to play it ONCE after midnight on a Sunday. MTV was inundated with requests and that's the how legends are made.

The only comment I have about cutting down a song is that if they can play all of Bohemian Rhapsody, then they can play all of any song.
Yes, with the exception of November Rain, all three songs are from their debut album Appetite for Destruction. I don't think you can fully appreciate this album unless you were aware of it when it came out. You won't find a bigger David Lee Roth era Van Halen fan then me, but when this album came out, I was literally blown away. Heavy guitars, full bass, killer drums and this ginger haired skinny dude with tatts singing in a way I'd never heard before. I mean who opens the first song on their debut album with a war cry long ass scream? Axel Rose from Gus -N - Roses. Talk about grabbing your attention. The whole album is just fire. There's a reason it's the fastest selling debut album of all time. But it's every member of the band. Axel Rose, Slash, Duff McKagan (I highly recommend his book "It's so easy and other lies"), Izzy Stradlin, and Steven Adler, that gets the credit. Having said that if you really want to appreciate Slash's playing, listen or better yet react to "Anastasia" from his solo Apocalyptic Love album.
Sorry this was so long. The 80's were really the best time to grow up. We simply had the best music.
p.s. a note on the "where do we go?" lyrics. Axel simply couldn't think of anything to write. So, he asked the band where do we go from here? Then just decided to use that as the rest of the song. At least that's my understanding of it.
Okay. Now I'm done. I promise.

That opening riff by Slash is a real finger twister! He was using it as a fingering exercise when Axle heard him from the upstairs. Axle came down stairs, listened to it some more and said "I think there is a song there!" I have heard many of accomplished guitarist play that riff but nobody, NOBODY comes close to playing it as smooth and effortless as Slash! Nobody! Almost sounds mechanical he is so perfect!

Guys, very good reaction, for me it is the best song of the GUN'S, it happens the same as with ABBA, with Dancing Queen, which is the best song of each group, has the positivity, the lyrics, and the right energy to share the list of the Rolling stones within the best songs in history.

The song that blew up and rocketed GnR into the stratosphere. The great thing about songs like this is that it has a great groove that you can move bang your head to, and has an edge to it so that it’s not pop cheese.

Legend has it that little riff used as the intro - & revisited throughout - was just a little finger warm up Slash came up with for himself. The rest of the band heard it & decided it was too good to be ignored. & Duff gets nowhere near the love & respect his Bass deserves.

In the late ‘80s, early’90s when I was going out a lot, there were really only 3 rock bands’ songs that made it onto the rotation with R&B and EDM songs in the dance clubs and those were this song, “Sweet Child o’ Mine”, “You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC and “Pour Some Sugar on Me” by Def Leppard. The whole club used to go crazy when these got played.
You need to react to “Paradise City” by Guns N’ Roses, next.

I played this as part of a band, just once, it was the only gig I ever played lead as due to a bunch of things we all ended up going our separate ways after, and I switched to playing drums. So, my first gig as lead and I'm up front playing this alone for that first bar (terrifying) before the band comes in, and concentrating fearsomely to keep the cadence, and let the notes ring out. It was the best thing ever! Except I screwed the solo up, grabbed a handful of strings, lost where I was and just improvised and hoped for the best. Turns out I was the only one who noticed, the discordant screech when I messed up they took as me launching the solo 🤣 Love this song, loved playing it, I hope the music gods forgive me for messing the solo up.

This song was originally created when Slash was playing his guitar on the sidelines of rehearsals without Slash's knowledge. Axl was listening to this simple session while writing a poem for his girlfriend Erin Everly.

Another 'fun fact's of this song,..Slash & Steven Adler we're drinking and Slash was just making funny faces while playing the lik and Axl heard it,came back 20 minutes later with all those magnificent lyrics. The rest is history 😅

I remember listeining to this record as a kid, such a good buy as every song was a good one. Some records one bought back then was like 1 or 2 good songs and rest fillers. No filler on this one imo. :) My favorites aside from this one back then was Nighttrain, Paradise city and Welcome to the jungle.

I love the solo but the parts I always feel add the most to the compositions are the little notes here and there. That whole section after his main solo is a collection of those "random" notes that just make the music so much more interesting. I'm pretty sure what got cut was the slower solo earlier in the song.
