IT ALL GOES WRONG - FIRST TRIP

  • This week it all goes wrong for the first time in 4 years on our first trip in our new setup.
This week we set off to make some awesome footage in our new setup while making a dash back to Victoria to try and see a mate. We find two amazing camps and we got some epic footage to find out when we arrived and started editing our content our external hard drive got damaged some how loosing some important footage for the episode. We haver taken the external hard drive in to a specialist to see if we could try and save it but at a cost of a $1000 and only be told 80% of the footage could be recovered we couldn't justify it.
So we sit down and share the experience with you and show some footage we managed to have on our devices that were not lost.
Hope you understand and still enjoy this episode and we will bounce back and get back out there to do what we love to do.
    Thank you for understanding

Blue Rag Range trig point track is a really spectacular drive and not challenging, there's some really nice free camping around the Buckland area, right on the river - caravan friendly. Lots of easy/gravel tracks around Mount Buffalo with heaps of waterfalls. Heaps to do and see around Dargo and Omeo too, looking forward to seeing where you go!

I hope you are able to recover some of your data. Suggestions in no particular order. Beechworth Bakery is a must stop. Mount Buffalo, Bright and/or Mount Beauty would be a good base to do day trips from. Omeo, great coffee, camping at Hinnomunjie Bridge. Good camping along the Mitta Mitta River. The Dargo Pub as a base to explore. Also, Mansfield, Howqua and Jamieson to name a few. Some of the Vic High country roads and surrounds are not caravan friendly eg. road into Suggan Buggan. However, a magnificent drive. Looking forward to this part of your journey. Enjoy your week.

Great episode and such a shame about the lost footage..
It’s pronounced Narr-ah-bry (Narrabri). and Nam-oy (Namoi) river.
Make sure you check out Bright as it’s stunning and not had a huge amount of rain out this way and Bright is smack bang in the middle of Mount Hotham and Mount Buffalo.

If you are staying on the Frankston peninsula you can take the ship across the bay to see the 12 apostles. About $130 car and caravan. Stay at Warrnambool caravan park to walk to the historic museum. Do the night show also. This is where the movie about a dog protecting the penguin hatchery was made. Then head to halls gap from here.

If you haven’t re-used the reformatted card you can often recover the contents as the format is usually a quick format which just deletes the allocation table (the address book for the data) rather than the data itself.
I would probably use Samsung SSD drives rather than anything that spins - you might not be able to do the advanced data recovery on them but then they’re generally harder to break. The normal data storage methods with hard disks are going to be a hard ask when they’re getting bounced around. You could try an external 2 drive enclosure that mirrors the data onto two disks and use enterprise hard drives so you have redundancy.
Cloud backups are harder as I’m guessing the data is vast and upload speeds are your enemy for raw footage. If you can do it then Backblaze B2 is good as, rather than Google etc., it is their main business.

Go to Benalla art gallery and get a free map on artwork in the area. Devenish is a must-see. Winton wet land and check out the big photo.
Lindy chamblin lived in Benalla. Violet town market. Biggest and longest in the state. Gapsted wines and food, but there are lots in the area. There is a beer place near Glenrowan. The dredge at Eldorado is big. You can go inside. It has been done out. If you go get a miners right 25 for 10years. A pan. Reedy ck, camping. Find a track. Down. Not campground. Dig behind big rocks. 22ct fine gold. A sauce bottle and metal straw. Also, look for glass rock , see through in the sun.
Benalla cemetery, barns grave, Ned Kelly second man. Also look online ww2 Australian airline crash. I think it n75x mosquito. The men are buried there. It was tied to Barns Wallace secret mission. Small bouncing bombs for Japan..

Sorry about your loss of photo data . I understand how disappointing that can be , memories on film gone forever . Would like to know where you stayed in Melbourne if not privately please . We have a caravan park we use if needed for caravan things or visiting family/friends but you need to book well in advance which is not always possible and when we needed one to change over our van in April …….all Melbourne CPs were full so camped at the bowling club (free) 40 kms north at Broadford . Look forward to wherever you go next .

Mate that sucks! Same happend to me. 5 years of Gopro and Drone footage lost. First 5 years of my boys life videos, all
gone. At least I did save some edits on my CZcams channel.
Who is the company that you used?
    I still have my drive.
Had it with multiple IT guys. Nobody can get the footage off.

Guys, bit of a nerd here who has had his fair share of external hdd pain.
Invest in an ssd driver. They have no moving parts so are far less susceptible to damage. The old ones are literally like a disc (think vinyl record or cd) that can be damaged easily.

External hard drives for backup are a nightmare, I've lost stuff before. Shop around, you should be able to get a new hard drive that fits you laptop and you should be able to get a case for it and it becomes a backup drive in case your laptop drive stuffs up.

Payam Data Recovery could do it, may be who you spoke to but $1K is about right. Take a look at SSD storage, slightly higher cost per GB for same capacity however less prone to being physically damaged. Have multiple backups.

Always awful when you lose data. Great approach to have a minimum of 2 copies with one being remote. With your StarLink you have the bandwidth and data to sync to some form of Cloud for cold storage. Remote is important not just for corruption. There is theft, fire or the ole fat figure of human error. SSDs may be more reliable for travel but they are still no guarantee of not losing data either.

If you still have the Sony memory card you formatted, you may be able to recover the media. SanDisk SD cards come with a limited license for recovery software. It can often unformat the SD card depending on a few prerequisites. I think k it would be worth a try.

Just a few questions I'm sure you have probably answered a million times.
I'm looking at starting my lap early next year and will by myself my sons 13 & 10 with our 65kg 🐕. Any tips on travelling with a dog besides the stopping more often.
Any advice for starting out full time travelling would be appreciated.

That is super exciting news, congrats! When travelling with dogs make sure you plan accommodation ahead and have some cash in the kitty for any vet visits. Always plan where you can buy food for your big boy/girl as sometimes it's difficult when remote. Also use the dog filter to identify camps. If you are going to any pf the major tourist areas book dog care at least 2 or 3 months in advance. Make sure they have their tick and flea treatment and the grey seresto collar when in FNQ or north west. Travel is totally possible with a dog, it just requires more planning. Please feel free to reach out with any questions and enjoy the planning.

Hi guys - $1000 to recover a hard drive is a absolute rip-off. Shop around and you should find someone that can recover all your files for you for a few hundred dollars. It is a simple job that takes about one hour of effort, however the duration of the data recovery may take up to 12 hours - the work is all done by a computer.
