Very hungry canopener bridge defeats fancy, new warning system
Vložit

- In May, the Dept. of Transportation installed a very nice LED blank-out warning sign at the 11foot8 bridge. The new sign is combined with a traffic light that stops traffic when an overheight truck approaches. Yet, when the bridge is hungry, it will eat. Watch as the canopener lures in an unsuspecting moving truck and chews up the roof.
It would be hilarious if that sign could say "I told you" after the truck hits the bridge.
so right.
Hahahah, honostly, they should!
i was thinking just "LOL"

What about the people it did work on? You don't see them.
@eric Spencer that was Confucius
I think they should have put "Overheight detected" Because the current warning signs make it looks like it's always saying that
It's also LED. It could just pop up "Overheight" flashing red once it detects an overheight vehicle, no need for text or any warnings unless that happens. This is a confusing design, especially with green lights right next to it. With something distinguishing the message from the lights it would have been more apparent to a driver that might have a wandering mind due to life/stress/overworked etc. One could argue that's not a state to be in while driving but everyone does it from time to time and we're not getting away from that.
I am guessing the sensor isn’t that accurate at detecting exact height of the truck.
As long as anything taller than a minivan, SUV, pickup truck, etc, it’ll probably set off that sensor. So a tour bus would likely have also set it off.
It is the truck driver’s own duty to know how height his vehicle is.
Yeah I mean I guess. On the other hand driver deserved what he got after seeing not only the posted height but a reminder sign to check. In a way it's good to have absent minded drivers off the road so they don't hurt someone else and still learn a lesson
@@sir.636 You act as if you've never been absent minded while driving. If that is true, I'm quite impressed.
Yeah
I love the fact that the light turns red automatically to give drivers time to think. It's a smart move.
Still not effective, though... 😪
Incredible how they have nearly a minute to sit their with their thoughts and calculate what the warning sign could possibly mean... and still go anyways
it seems to just make some speed up to run the red light and hit it harder
Yeah, I thought that was a pretty genius idea. Too bad they’re fighting against human psychology.
Yes... But only for people who can think
The problem is it says "overheight must turn", which sounds like a general rule that only applies if you think you are over height. It should say "You are overheight. You must turn".
Useless Duck Company you could almost say its the signs fault now because it went green so the driver TRUSTED the technology
and add strobe lights.
Turning right would put them in a one way street tho
Useless Duck Company You do have a good point. If these people arent smart enough to read a sign stating the height of the bridge why would they be smart enough to read this? However thinking that adding more words to it will help is a flawed logic. This just goes to show you adding more safety measures wont fix the problem and that problem is stupidity.

I can understand rental trucks, I can't understand professionals not knowing how tall the truck is.
Being an Experienced Class A driver I have driven B and non-CDL and worked for a moving company a few years, these type of van trucks are mainly non-CDL so its likely some one with lack of CDL training with a Class D license. I love how to sign turns off after it passes under like, "well, I tried..."
Maybe a sign on the other side give the URL for State Unemployment Compensation
lmfao
That is funny. Right, it stops wasting its effort.
"I don't think I'm overheight, but after seeing that I'm not taking any chances..."
So, driver thinks that the bridge has changed its mind once the lights turn green again.
Bridge: “I’ve made you wait long enough, you may pass”
That was my thought too. Red wait a sec, green okay now you can go. As someone else rightly pointed out the sign saying "overheight must turn" implies an "if you are", instead of saying "overheight turn now!" which indicates that a calculation was done. The red/green with the low urgency sign just adds to the driver's own ineptitude of knowing the vehicle he's driving or not paying attention.
@@ih82r8 Honestly, the sheer fact that the two signs signaling the height of the bridge aren't enough, so that the display is even needed already baffles me. Then considering that a message that lights up when YOU approach is still not clear enough because it doesn't form a complete sentence that specifically adresses you and I think I might have just lost quite a bit of faith in humanity
@@doomse150 The fact that some of the people in this comment section are actually trying to advocate for the truck driver and say they're not at fault makes it worse. It doesn't matter if you're driving a rental truck, you should still be aware of the height of the vehicle you're driving. If you're using a rental why not just ask the company you're renting the vehicle from what the height is if you're not sure what the height is? They likely know the height of their own vehicles. The light only turned green because of the other drivers in low height vehicles passing under. If it was just that truck waiting to go the light would stay red. Keeping it red because of one truck with a bunch of regular vehicles waiting to go would just make everyone stuck, causing a traffic jam. This isn't rocket science, the sign makes it obvious. It doesn't take a genius to simply look at the other vehicles going the same direction and if you don't see any other tall vehicles then the sign is talking to you specifically. The truck driver has nobody to blame but themselves here.
This bridge's warning system really fits the meme "That sign won't stop me because I can't read!" perfectly.
@@stdokuro Yup, I basically said the same thing in response to another comment:
"Shouldn't any legitimate driver really know their vehicle's required clearance? And shouldn't they also at least have passed the drivers' test, and hence be able to read the clearance signs and heed their inherent warning? Really, the overheight warning system shouldn't be required at all!" The sad thing is, that especially the users of rental/lease vehicles don't really give a -shit- poo, because "Hey, why would I care? This isn't my truck!"
It should flash "DUMBASS" when an overheight vehicle goes through
lol. yeah that would get the point across.
I was thinking “I tried to tell him...” but your idea works too.
They need to add another camera on the other side of the bridge to catch the reaction of the idiot drivers that keep trying to run under the bridge.
It's definitely Darwinian.

@@elijaha773 "They" could be the person who runs this channel, supported by the insurance company who needs the evidence.

I don’t understand why there is no “test bar” before the bridge. If the truck hits the bar, the driver takes conscience it’s too high . By itself the sign doesn’t attract much attention.
Because there are businesses after that turn that get regular deliveries from large trucks. Which is why they dont just ban trucks from that road entirely. Placing a test bar far enough back to be effective risks damage to perfectly legal and law abiding delivery trucks
@@nekowitch417 it's clear they meant just before the bridge, like a few meters back, no need to go to the begining of the road... Trucks that already know of the bridge and are law abiding would not have to be hit by that bar. Still, adding a test bar is just an excess that shouldnt be needed if drivers payed attention to signs lmao.
@@AlFredo-sx2yy they would have to put it in the middle of that intersection or just before it to do that. And trucks USE that intersection for deliveries just like I had said. Putting it in the middle would do nothing because most of these trucks are going so fast that they wouldn't be able to stop in time anyway. Literally every bit of that road is needed up until a few feet from that crossbar for deliveries.
They actually crash into a bar and then into the bridge. Look at 01:00 and you can see the bar like two meters in front of the bridge
@@irgendwerirgendwo9095 thats no test bar, thats a protective barrier for the bridge. If you allow direct collision, the bridge takes more damage. That's why that bar is there, not for testing or advicing, but for damage prevention to the bridge. If you let that very same truck at the same speed as in the video directly hit the bridge, well, lets just say that after a few accidents there would be no more bridge accidents to worry about. Because there would be no more bridge.
:v
If someone doesn't understand that the 11'8" sign applies to them, they aren't going to understand that "overheight" applies to them. The warning sign is useless to anyone who actually needs it.
You need a blinking warning sign that tells you that there is a blinking overheight sign.
still, idiots will do what idiots do
they could have a curtain drop from under the bridge and i bet people would still go plowing thru haha!

+ juliusejudo I've made that suggestion, have a metal rolling door drop down to seal off the entrance...and someone will still hit it.
Here we see the 11foot8 bridge in its natural habitat. The lone truck stops and waits for its turn to pass. As the overheight sign flashes a warning call, the truck idles in its lane before ambling forward unheedingly. The warning sign works, but the bridge is hungry. If you listen closely, you can hear the dying cries of the unfortunate truck as the unforgiving bridge slowly consumes it.
I read that with an Aussie accent.

It is a Southern bridge, so it would display "Damn Son".
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yessssssssssss .
LOOK at how cluttered with warning signs that bridge is , you couldn't possibly warn people more about the bridge. But they still hit it. This channel shall live on!
Warning chains on the approaches, a low hanging gong bar as well and you will still get the oblivious ones who will ignore the loud noises on the way to the " just a bit off the top please" bridge.
Sometimes the low tech solutions seem to be missed here. I thought about that as well, some low hanging, swinging sign they would hit is much more attention grabbing than the mess of blinking lights and signs all over the place. I mean not to take away the blame of the truck driver, he's clearly at fault, but most people don't pay attention to all the signs everyday driving. We tune out most except what we expect to see (lights, stop signs, etc).
Chains and bars are not good solutions on this road because delivery trucks need to regularly make a left turn at the intersection to get to stores/restaurants. This bridge is literally the perfect can opener death trap. Can't change the road, the bridge, or the surroundings, and trucks regularly whip through there at 20 over the speed limit.
and howitzers........
If you REALLY wanted to, couldn't you lower the surface of the underpassing road?
Sign should say overheight truck detected, must turn. I had to watch the video like three times before I realized that the sign wasn't always just a general warning, that it was actually specifically triggered by the truck
That's the thing- If this guy is a professional driver for that company, he just lost his job. You're trained and shown these signs, and what they mean. If you ignore them, and do this- You're fucked.
Seriously? The video STARTS with 5 seconds zoomed on the warning sign in question, one of each side of the road, written warning in the middle of both lights, a bright red left turn sign and the low part of the bridge in clear yellow. All while the system forces you to be in front of it for half a minute
Unless part of the mole people you should get it, don't need to be Shakespeare to understand what the height indicated means, even more if you drive a truck. Anyone that doesn't get it is a public danger that shouldn't drive in the first place.
My point is unless you actually see the words in the middle turn on, it's easy to assume that sign is just a general warning, not something that was triggered by a sensor. If u add the word detected the meaning of the sign changes from " IF your truck is too tall you must turn" to "your truck IS too tall, you must turn". Not everybody knows the height of their vehicle so it takes the guesswork out.
@@georgemartinez932 Not knowing the height of a truck you're driving is asking for accidents, be it professional or rental, you're even specifically pointed-out about it not being covered by insurance with examples being shown, and that's not even taking into account your height being displayed *on the windscreen*
This idea of yours also doesn't take into account every other truck that may be present, how are they supposed to know that it's not meant toward them? Should traffic be entirely diverted because of the occasional drooling moron that would attempt to pass even if the signs had more flashing lights than new year?
@@scorpixel1866 yes
"Overheight must turn" is not an instruction, it's a general information statement, it must be changed to indicate very specifically that one of the vehicles *currently approaching* is overheight for this bridge and must turn, otherwise the sign is almost useless. Also, maybe it would be useful for truck rental companies to put a sticker on the dashboard indicating the precise height of the truck, it would be pretty difficult for your average person who doesn't drive trucks often to know the height of their moving truck just by looking at it.
The sign is clear as day to me. If you're fucking stupid and don't understand that if your truck is overheight and you must turn, then there's no amount of addendums will help you
@@glutenfree7057 Very possible that they thought the sign was always on. Only reason it's clear as day to you is because you're failing to put yourself into their shoes. I bet you've had just as many absent minded driving mistakes as anyone else, even if they weren't "ripping the top off of a rental truck" bad.
I thought I would never see a video here again
There will always be idiots too focused on playing with their phone to even see the bridge, much less the warning sign. There will be more.
Prof that no AI, or robot, or Systems, can out smart human stupidity. :D
To be fair....the lights turn red, and the sign says to turn left. But the signals go green again, as if things are now OK. They may have to leave the red lights on longer?
As I said in the previous video, when ever something is made that is said to be "foolproof," an even bigger fool is born.
Nope, Longer red lights are not the answer. That just means the driver has to ignore the sign for a longer time. Of course the lights go green again. Are they supposed to shut down traffic every time an over height truck comes by? That bridge is listed on EVERY truckers map. It is probably listed on every trucker's GPS too. Every time you foolproof something they build a better fool. At some point you have to stop defying nature and allow natural selection to work its magic. [♪♫tweeeeeeet ♫♪] YOU! OUTTA THE GENE POOL!
I guess the nest step is to install those pop-up posts in the road. When the car in front of the truck passes over them they pop up and the truck slams into them.
they should add a crash sensor to the overheight bar to the sign so that after it hits it flashes "DUMBASS"...
In situations like this, when the driver of the stuck truck is still behind the wheel, I've found it helpful to pull up along side and politely inform them they can't park there.
tbh I would never guess what "Overheight must turn" even meant before watching the videos on this channel
honestly, you don't need to know what the sign means. you just need some simple math - is the height of your truck bigger than 11 feet and 8 inches? people say the sign isn't clear what overheight is but the height is clearly laid out regardless
@@litapd311 Exactly. If you're driving something larger than a car, you NEED to know - and be able to remember - what its height is. This isn't a negotiation or debate, it's a basic necessity for driving large vehicles. I don't understand how people get qualified for this without this basic knowledge.
@@litapd311 people that picked up a moving rental, like this guy, clearly have no idea how tall their one day truck is
Yeah, of course not. It's not a coherent sentence, it doesn't make sense without the context of the low bridge.
@@litapd311 Yeah "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN" shouldn't make a truck driver think "Eeh it's just a general sign!" (like SO MANY people here say when claiming the sign is confusing) and definitely SHOULD make them at least consider the height of their truck.
That is, if they're not driving a truck weighing several tons that could kill anyone in an instant half-asleep through the city. If they are, I'm glad they hit the bridge to wake up.

Of course truck drivers shouldn't need a sign to avoid bridges, but engineers don't have the luxury of designing roads for people who drive competently all the time.
This warning system should be brought as an example in UX classes
It is a pathetically ineffective sign.
In Edmonton we have the infamous High Level bridge with it's 3.0 (10'9") meter clearance. It destroys trucks at least twice a month despite the city putting in an "escape" road turnout just before the bridge. No amount of warning signage will prevent such disasters but at least it frees the city from any liability. The High Level bridge in Edmonton is more than a 2.0 Km long landmark but a designated historical structure.
Problem is drivers do not know what overheight detected means or might think it is not for them. They should use complete sentences and be specific. "YOUR BIG TRUCK IS NOT GOING TO FIT UNDER THIS BRIDGE" with bells and whistles next to the bridge flashing.
if you do not know the height of your truck. you should not be driving. period.
Well, you know, they probably heard that all the clearances in NY are actually a foot higher than the low clearance signs claim, so probably it's like that everywhere.
p.s. most of the trucks getting unroofed there are leased

In the UK, bridges especially at risk of being struck have a very simple warning system - a message is activated that says

Bridge was shown being measured in video clip. Is actually 11'10" tall. Even giving them 2", they screw up. Of course the numbers must never be changed. 11'8" will go down in history. Love it! Love it! Love it! ^_^
The only improvement I can think of is to make the OMT sign blink off and on to catch the driver's attention. He might have thought it was just a normal always-on warning sign.
Or invert colors as a way of blinking.
MoneyManHolmes red spinning or police lights would work a lot better
a LASER LIGHT SHOW WITH DISCO BALLS!!
They have added a blinking effect to it now and idiots still run into it, foolishly assuming that the sign isn't talking to them specifically, lol.
I was thinking an alarm or maybe even a gate that closes when you're within 10 feet or so.
Ha ha ha, the bridge lives to fight another day, just love it!
I once stumbled on a low bridge driving a 12' high RV in NY. All signs leading up to the bridge (which was on some sort of expressway) said "no trucks" but didn't specify why... so I assumed I'll be okay. Kept going, passed an exit and immediately after the exit you see a sign that says 10'6" so right there in the left lane of this expressway we stopped. Didn't even attempt to cross under it. We had to team up in reversing this thing about 200' back to the exit, directing traffic around us, cross all lanes, pick up the person outside, and get on the surface streets to get back on track. That was wild! But we didn't damage a thing!
Why else would a bunch of signs say no trucks?
maybe keep the sign going even after you switch back to green so that when the truck approaches he could have even more time to se the sign
If a truck drives into it the sign should pop up an image of Red Foreman with the caption "dumbass".
I dread the thought of what must happen to the driver and any passengers in each one of these. To be suddenly shaken up and down while violently coming to a halt, you know they must bash into a lot of stuff, including the steering wheel on the drivers chest and legs, unless he is well strapped down. It's got to be hell in there.
I love that raising the bridge 8" only serves to be even more deceptively normal to drive under....
Truck driver: Ignores warning signs and proceeds forward anyway.
Bridge: "So, you have chosen death..."
"Death.... ..............by ugga bugga."
So tell me Yovo68, I'm guessing you work right there...did you heart skip a beat & did you secretly smile to yourself when you heard the sound?
He actually does.
Imagine if a double decker party bus with people on top went through
There was a fatal accident similar to that in Ottawa a couple years ago. A double decker bus veered onto a curb and rammed into an overhanging part of a steel bus station.
@@wizardsuth ah Canada you never cease to amaze me and I'm Canadian.
thanks satan
Happened somewhere near Berlin a few years ago. Luckily, the bus was empty, because half the roof got sheered off across at least half the busses length and it was severely depressed at the rear. So most passengers would have been crushed to bits.
Two days after it made the news, I saw the wreck as it was transported to the repair shop on the Autobahn.
They should put up a sign that gives a slideshow of all the previous crashes before they let the guy go for it.
Adding some VERY bright blinking (or chasing if epileptic seizures is a concern) lights around the Overheight sign (only activated when Overheight is detected) might help the truck driver make the connection that the message is for THEM. A message that's always there soon blends into the background to be treated like "the boy who cried wolf" and is soon ignored.
Like 'Useless Duck Company' says, the truck drivers don't know the message is meant for THEM.
Proof that you can't fix stupid. Aside from the clear warning sign, this overpass is famous around the country. I first heard about this overpass not from the internet, but from seeing segments about it on TV. You'd think that everyone driving through the area would know about the can opener.
hey we have one near by its in urbana, ohio weeeeeeeeeeee!
This was shown to me on CNN when they actually did normal reporting.
We need 6-foot 1 tall bridges to annoy tall people
That would be called a short door
@@christopherjohnston6343 But it's still a bridge, not a door. I've been under really short bridges where companies haven't been bothered to dig it out properly so you have to bend over to get underneath.
Hmm, turned green and then sign went blank before overheight struck??!
I think people are seeing it as “If you’re overheight, you must turn”
As opposed to “you ARE overheight, you must turn”
It could use some clarification
It's the responsibility of the driver to know how tall their truck is.
Johnnie Cochran would know: "If you are overheight, you must turn right!"
Reword the sign. "DO NOT EVEN TRY TO PASS. YOU ARE DEFINITELY OVERHEIGHT"
Such a clear and profound demonstration of "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink." If you've ever given a friend advice just for them to ignore it and be idiotic anyway, watch this video. Watch this video with the grim satisfaction you deserve.
Finally after watching this video my life has a purpose now, I could go to sleep now 🙌
The warning system ought to be reconsidered! Formally, it´s allright, but it doesn´t give an acute warning, like flashing lights.
Ah, the legend returns. :)
Ok pay the winners. Who had early July?
There should be more warnings before coming to the bridge about the height of the bridge.
A physical item 11foot8 above the road before the bridge that would hit the truck making a sound would solve the problem.
Well, somebody’s day went from 0 to Suck in 2 seconds.
when you tell the barber to take a little off the top
I swear there's an 11'6" bridge on a back-road near where I live.. But I never hear about anything even close to this bad happening cause of it. lmao
Cuz it's a backroad.
@@snowoffstream5823 lol maybe, but there's always small trucks on it when I'm on it, and it's a full-speed road.. not like there's no traffic.
The width of a street also causes more careful driving, sometimes you have put limits on the weight of vehicles allowed to pass, to keep trucks out of areas.
I like how the sign turns of at 1:10 as if to say, “whatever bro. Your funeral.”
4 years on, this bridge still stands undefeated. No matter how much warning you give people, no matter if you flip on a red light, they will till run that red light and rip their dang lid right off. This particular fool just completely ignored the sign, but thee rest of the bridges victims since seem to be red-light runners.
I work for the company that owns this vehicle and I randomly just came across this. The company is Allied Van lines. It’s a moving business. The truck is 13.2ft and they had enough time to consider their options. I just showed my boss, he said “Holy shit, I think I heard about this one, the driver lost his license”
Yes!!!!! I knew it was only a matter of time.
How about this: A mandatory device for trucks that will annoy the hell out of you if you approach any structure that is lower the truck's roof
This might be the most obscure video ever recommended to me
Quit letting people without a CDL drive these trucks. You notice it's very rare that a full sized semi hit this? Because they actually know how to drive a big truck.
That true, I have noticed that.
My cousin briefly worked for Fed Ex driving semi's. One day he and his co-driver (the one driving at the time) came across a similar situation. The GPS had told the co-driver a low clearance bridge was coming up. Without flinching, the co-driver looks at my cousin and asks, "should we try it anyway?"
Actually, that sounds great. However, in the real world, full sized semis get caught on Smugglers Pass, VT nearly every year and a bridge in Central Park has regular full size victims. Those are the ones I know about.
Response to your cousin's co-driver, "Who are you and get the hell outta my truck!"
I don't know about that. We have a bridge here that is a little higher, so most truck like this are fine, but larger commercial trucks are not. They tend to hit the bridge often, even with warning signs. It may simply be that few larger trucks use this street.
YAY! the bridge lives!!
I hope the driver got a serious $1,000 fine for disobeying the Overheight sign!
I do enjoy that they went through all the effort of raising the bridge slightly instead of digging the bottom out more.
That sign is awesome. I like how it gives truck drivers a warning before they attempt to pass under. If drivers are too dumb to get it Gandalf should appear on the screen with his most famous line: 'YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!!' Maybe then they'll get it. :D
The rental places don't cover the damages done by this bridge since they warn the drivers resting ahead of time about said bridge. 15-25k to repair one of those box truck backs apparently and the rental insurance does NOT cover any of it. Rough lesson to learn!
Ditto the costs of retouching the paint on the bridge, presumably.
Judging by the amount of accidents here, you could literally put a big red arrow pointing left that illuminates half as bright as the sun when a truck is too tall and the driver will just barrel through the bridge anyway.
"Hmm. I wonder that sign's flashing. GOD DAMN IT!"
I like how the white car on the right backs up a bit after the truck crashes like "Should I leave?"
