- This game is weird. It looks a lot like Touhou, but it does not??
Len'en Project is the name and it's here to save the day! It's a weird game created by three Japanese students, later given to famous-yet-small-man JynX. Why is it so weird? I dunno, probably Tsubakura's hat and the strange OST.

I've also been meaning to learn more about len'en, I've known of it's existence ever since me and my brother located a song from it from a meme, and it seems interesting, and I could always use another rabbithole to go down
Len'en is honestly really neat in that it seems like Touhou on the surface but has a different vibe underneath it all.
Where Touhou games often follow a specific self-contained theme and build their characters and story around that, Len'en games are often more chaotic (especially in 4's case...) and serve to slowly reveal more of the mystery about the setting and the characters.
The gameplay, writing and music are also far more chaotic and rough around the edges, but this isn't exclusively a bad thing, since it does help Len'en feel more distinct. It honestly reminds me of PC-98 Touhou, which also feels quite different from the more modern games.
And at the end of the day, both series exist and can be enjoyed at the same time, so if you're a fan of both it's like having two different cakes you can eat both of!

Correction: suzumi was introduced in BPoHC trial ver as a secret stage 3 boss, they were later added as playable in the past 3 games after that

Len'en has always been a project that I found interesting, I sadly have never gotten the time to get around to playing it, but this video seems to preety much sum up the entirety the series! This really gives me the 2014 vibes i love it!

People calling Len'en a ripoff is stupid,when ZUN was creating touhou in PC_98 he stole some assets from other games code,also he stole some art and character without the franchise or mangas permission,so touhou also was a weird dodonpochi ripoff that nobody really cared about,till touhou 6 happened and everyone now love touhou(example of heavily inspired cast?):

False, Daijin only knew JynX years later as a co-worker and gave the original Len'en idea and helped JynX develop his games, as evidenced in games' credits. Also it seems that JynX himself had something in his mind (as evidenced in The Wings of Magritte video). Just a hunch, but I see current Len'en is a combination of both, or JynX piling ideas and modifying upon Daijin's concept. While JynX loves The Elder Scrolls and many other fantasy series with deep lore, Daijin's game was average 2000s Japanese meta "humor", almost cringy.

If you're playing in order, you don't have to play as Suzumi at least either RMI (which serves as a prequel to BPoHC) or BPoHC, as in EE and EMS, they're just going back in time to collect more information.

It's weird, but I was convinced to play a bullet hell because of the story and characters.
I think the "might be better in some ways" quote might be stirring the pot a little... some annoying people came put of the woodworks.
The only thing I really could consider objectively "better" is the flashbomb system, which gives grazing a tangible reward and not just score.
Aside from that, go out and enjoy the series! It's pretty silly, even if some of the overall ideas are dark.
Final note: Len'En is comprised of the characters names (houLEN, ENraku).

How could you make a video on len'en and not mention its most infamous "achievement", the legendary len'en 4 abrievieted BPoHC. This game has spawned memes that often seep into even regular touhou discussions like "BPoHC is something you are better of not knowing, and if you know, you are better off not playing". Yet BPoHC still has an active player base who tortur... I mean enjoys themselves with it. Actually BPoHC jokes were on the rise when th 18.5 was anounced due to people imediately looking to examples of the cell based gameplay ZUN was introducing.

Just as a note, JynX's gender is unknown (much like Len'en characters^, lol). It's just that a lot of people assume they're a man and thus refer to them as he/him, so I'm guessing you probably got misled by that.
^Well, a few backstory characters and two characters from side-materials have canon genders. Just detailing this because if I don't, someone else will.

@@lemonapric i think it is just my bad luck or maybe because i'm from a Spanish speaking country (the video in question was in Spanish), and the fanart i think it was just a coincidence, it came from an artist who really despises the franchise and one of it ms drawings was about a len en character being presented as better and Stronger than the Touhou ones complete with the guy saying it.
I know it isn't that bad and i may be overreacting but since those were my only experiences with the franchise i cant help but see it in a negative light

As a Len'en fan, I disagree, touhou has better atmosphere while Len'en lacks good stages. Len'en beats Touhou in lore tho. Len'en is also winning in terms of banger boss themes.
