Derveni Corinthia | A village next to the sea with crystal clear waters and 1.5 hours from Athens
Derveni is a coastal village-town of Corinth with a population of 1280 inhabitants (according to the 2021 census), located on the western side of the law and on the border with Achaia. During the period 1998 - 2010 it was the headquarters of the "Kapodistrian" Municipality of Eurostini. Today it constitutes a municipal community of the "Kallicratic" Municipality of Xylokastro - Eurostini.
In the past it was renamed, in 1928 to Stenoporon, in 1929 to Aktaion, and in 1933 the name Derveni returned.
Characteristic of the village are the small coves with crystal clear waters that create a visual spectacle unique to Greek standards that cannot leave you unmoved. The waters are pristine and wild and in fact at a relatively short distance from the coast their depth reaches 100 meters.
It is easily accessible both from Patras (75 km away) and from Athens, since the 141 km distance is covered in about 1.5 hours by car.
Derveni Corinthia is the port for the inland and mountain villages of Eurostini and Feneo and although it has been described as the "Miami of the Peloponnese" it has been kept away from mass tourism, remaining a destination for leisurely excursions.
Derveni was founded by Zacholite settlers around 1860-1865 and got its name from the narrowness of its position between the mountain and the sea. The word (derven means narrow passage) is Turkish, derived in turn from Persian, but has been naturalized and adapted to the modern Greek standard.
The Zacholite settlers were mainly engaged in the raisin trade. In the commercial heyday of Derveni, from the middle of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century, hundreds of workers worked in packing plants for Corinthian raisins, which were loaded from the port of Derveni on large commercial ships and sold in the markets of Europe. Today, Derveni is a lemon production center.
