Bit of background for the Jeff Buckley influence:
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a singer of the traditional singing style called Qawwali (originating from the Islamic regions of the Indian subcontinent). The example of Buckley's song given wasn't a great comparison - much better would have been his song "Grace", which features him singing various fast melismatic runs that are typical of Qawwali singing.

I like the artists that have weird influences like Jeff Buckley because it tends to add more to the artist as a musician and someone who actually does their due diligence in music rather than just being really similar to super popular artists. Because you can be influenced by super popular artists if you want but because a lot of super modern artists have obvious ultra popular influences from the 80's music scene that's why a lot of the current music sounds super similar because the 80's had a similar problem within the music scene with a lot of rock sounding similar to each other and a lot of pop sounding similar to each other. To be honest I actually think the 70's had the most variety in music with a popular prog rock scene, disco was popular but then you also had significant psychedelic rock. I would love Joel to look at artists that have interesting influences like say Nirvana(Nirvana's influences are pretty out there).

I think for ariana it is a mix of all great vocalists in the industry and also singers like Imogen heaps. Not her the vocal delivery but the way she does her harmonies etc etc. She learned from them all and created her own unique sound. I'm glad she did cause it's quite hard to find your unique sound when you're too influenced by someone.
