Rotors Magazine you should do common upgrades for the fc
Rotors Magazine No tips but quality is improving quick! Keep it up!
Wiper switches are pretty terrible in these cars too. I had an 89 and a 90 and neither one worked correctly.
FD buyer's guide?
yup, yesterday i changed the relay (wipers) no difference, the switch is fked i guess because the wires are connected right. only works on I
"Pretty much everything from the 80s is a pile of shit."
Truer words were never spoken.
My 1986 RX7 was a car I can never mentally let go of because it was a dream to start and drive. I sold it to an old friend when it still drove like it was brand new with over 187,000 miles. My friend's wife sold it behind his back when he was on an oil exploration ship, BITCH. I used Mobil One from the day I bought the RX7 in January, 1986.
You do a great job talking about the the magnificent Mazda RX7. Thank You.
Switchblade Minerva 86gxl was my first car. It was a horrid mistake lol. But I can't shake it either. I'm on the hunt 20 years later for another......to ls swap!! Lol
Would you ever consider getting one again?
BRUUUUH why she sold the rx7

Everyone complains about the fast speech yet I don't think I've learned this much about a car I've researched over the years in such a short amount of time! Great video and extremely informative. It took me a long ass time of forum hunting and many useless threads/videos that didn't get the the point or had too many opinions. Thank you for quality video!
This is one of the cleanest FC's I've ever seen
Mines cleaner haha it’s just slow lol
@@macoymorgan2347 it’s not slow so something is not working properly. Good news that it’s repairable.

so glad you guys are doing these videos im finally going to start building my na fc because you guys actually give enough clear and concise information on everything, never seen this amount of detail in any rotary videos
Just bought a jdm 89 fc3s! Glad i watch a lot of your vids!
Wiper Switch Is also a Common Issue. Make Sure It works on all speed.
Mazda Speed I have one speed and it's the middle one so it's either always too fast or too slow haha
@@abracing199 same bro I feel your pain
i love the color grading in your vids, keep up the good work bro! :D
When you were talking about the smooth revs, I remember from a couple decades ago, the 4250 rpm hiccup. I don't recall much about it but it wasn't a major issue as in rebuild or a system being in need of replacement; as mine did it, researched about it, and it wasn't deemed something that needed immediate attention and it never caused a problem with reliability while I owned it.
Thanks for the informative vid! I’m currently looking into an 87 FC and now I know what to look for when I check it out
Great info Kenny, I have to admit I do get lost a little when you talk so fast but I generally understand and its not really an issue. I enjoy your videos. Viva la rota
Great video! I too have an 88 10th anniversary FC. The other commenters basically covered everything I could think of to add, door handles, wiper switch etc. if I can add anything it's that a good warm up and warm down of the engine, pre and post use is the difference between getting 3,000 and 300,000 miles out of the engine. Also they burn oil fast so always watch your levels.
Excellent tips, especially the ones I don't hear brought up as often. Love your channel, keep up the good work
Good man, not annoying, not boring, informative, and decent camera. You've earned my sub 👌👌
Good video, I hope future rotary owners see this.
Hey bro I had a 10th anniversary for 19yrs, there were actually only about 1100 made. Each dealer got only one in 88, couldn't order one if you didn't get it. Love that you kept the right wheels on it!
Wow! dude that onomatopoeia compression test you proposed is... right! It`s really nice to hear your fast talk. I`m not in rotary but I think you give out alot of helpfull info. Cheers.
Thanks for all the info. Seriously leaning toward a FC for a weekend toy. My fiance had one a long time ago and loved it. I have always been interested in rotory's and now have some extra funds to get one.
If you are looking to buy a 1990 Rx7 in excellent condition with low miles and garage kept I have one for sale
Kenny, if I may, Sir, what i love about youtube is car movies. and the only thing better is car movies made by people who know more about the car than i do.... I had to click subscribe real fast, because you showcased an amazing car, and taught me a lot about it that i never knew.... If I do not see you before then, have a great weekend.
I got a lot of new knowledge from this video keep up the good work
Sick bro! Great video, I'm looking for a turbo 2 savanna at the mo this will all come in handy.
So much good information, thank you so much!
Great content buddy!!! Keep it up really informing content here thanks!!!!
My fc is now my daily and it has a an oil control ring issue and smokes a lot but honestly it’s not that bad after it’s up to temp it’s fine and doesn’t smoke and this car has honestly been really reliable and hasn’t let me down I’m planning on turbo II swapping it because it’s just a base model so I’m not planning to do a rebuild
the lost generation... my buddy had one and let me drive it, because i had some first gens..... i think i could deal with an FC.... but I am really glad you are posting wisdom to save my bacon......
Love the video! Few things to add to the list about fcs would be the diff mount and door handles, both seem to go bad on many fc's, both went on mine and two of my fiends had many of the same issues
KWTC
Yup.
My drivers side outer door handle broken.
also add center console vents being broken or missing, as well
KWTC my whole lock system fell apart :( keyless entry haha
Lachlan Mackay
Just like fast glass.
Great when it works but if it fails.
😧😡😠💥💰
You forgot one important thing. The A/C control module goes bad. It's almost always a bad solder joint. Reflow solder on the boards. Good to go. Another thing is the wiper controls. Usually a bad relay. Either replace them or take them apart and sand and clean the contacts. Also, water cools much better than anti-freeze. Water conducts heat away from the engine much faster. If you do run water only add a water soluble oil. It lubes the water pump. Something like water wetter works very well. It breaks down the surface tension of water and inhibits air bubbles from forming on the hot surfaces. The water flows over and cools much better. You could see a difference of 20 degrees. I have seen these engines go 400k miles before needing a rebuild.
Most important thing you should know about a rotary engine, wait until it warms and the thermostat opens before revving the engine over 3K. After that good to go and it will redline easily.
thanks for this video man, i love fc3s
Very informative as always!
Request:
Do a video for FB's and SA's/12a's.
Also do a video of why you should stick with the rotary instead of doing an LS swap.
Keep up the good work.

just subscribed, and am looking forward to more of this good content 👍👍
hey Kenny love your work
Great vid and lots of useful info for potential buyers.
Personally i just want an FC with a super clean body and a busted engine, so its cheaper, coz i plan on swaping a 20B in there :P
I miss my 10th anniversary edition that I bought new. Had the peeling paint too when I let it go in 99. Leaky injectors (and young kids) ultimately caused me to get rid of it, as it would not start when it was warm.
can i just say how much i love you guys' channel? you're attitude of "i'm gonna teach you shit, and fuck you if you don't like it" is perfect. it may ward off the huge number subscribers but with your perspective, you'll be rich in quality audience
Hey man.. Awesome video. Im looking at picking up a 1990 RX7 GTU series 5 i believe. I am not sure if its the S or not from the pictures. SO the guy says its his every day driver. Its got 128,000 miles. I have not seen it yet but trying to get the owner to make time to show it too me. I have a garage at my house and i went to school for auto mechanics. i can do most things but i never worked on , drove or even really seen a rotary engine or a RX7 up close. The thing is now i found one that needs some love and i have always wanted one. The guy is asking $1500 or best offer. This will be a learning curve and plan to watch more of your videos. Im in the South Carolina myrtle beach area. Down here we have a track we can drift at. The track is called Myrtle beach speedway and is run by MB DRIFT. As far as checking compression on it.. I do not have the compression tester. I dont think the guy will let me start messing with the car before i buy it. So really i gotta drive it and see how it runs. if he lets me drive it ill tell him i gotta get it to red line. As far as this engine i am going to check for all the leaks you said. im going to see what the oil pan looks like and hope we can make a deal. I dont mind fixing little things but i do not want to pull the motor. I can if i have too but i do not want to .. i just want to clean the car up and make it a nice weekend car . I dont plan on racing or driving it right away. I would like to road race it at a parking lot event. You can find me @ facebook.com/ccmobiledetailingLI
Liked before watching!

Yea bro! Drop in the KC hat...love it.
this is extremely helpful thank you
I'm really liking the FC and thinking of getting one after high school. there pretty cheap were I live but I heard rotaries are hard to work on. I'm not an expert in cars either but I want to learn. can't wait
They aren't hard to work on at all, just hard to maintain if you don't know what you're doing. Research is key, ask questions. If you ever meet someone at a meet with an fc or even fd/fb, ask every question that comes to mind about upkeep

I'd love to see you guys tackle some some common upgrade paths and maybe talk about cleaning up/simplifying the engine bay. There's a bunch of old dead threads on rx7club but nobody really has that info up any more.
"So i've got a bone stock T2 with a bunch of vacuum powered garbage on it. Where would you go with it first?"
I wish you still made rotary related videos. Hope is all going well Kenny
Very good video like always
When it comes to the more desirable fd rx7. My main recommendations are having a realistic budget, you will not find a mint condition one for under 10k. The current budget Im setting for myself is around 30k give or take a couple grand. You want a good rx7 with a little blemishes expect to pay 26k. The car isn't cheap but the price for what you get really isn't that bad. If you are younger and have less expenses the car is perfect for you, I plan on taking out a relatively small loan just to get the car and I plan on paying it off early. However if you plan on getting one in 5-10 years, I'm sorry bro at that time point it's gonna be worth upwards of 30k, 35k most likely.
As much as I don't want to admit it the prices are going up and if you want one you need to plan to buy it within the next 3 years. It is what it is, collectors driving up the prices of the cars we wanted as kids. Also if you can find some sort of special edition of the car for a good price buy it. Same applies to the fc and the fd.
Also if you are patient you can buy it and store it away, there are a couple loopholes in the 25 year rule that pretty much only let you use the car during certain situations. Also if you get one don't go crazy on the mods bro, that's why we have cheap fc's for. Please don't make an fd drift car, just don't. If you read this thanks for your time.
I'm 16 working at mcdonalds and saving every penny to buy my rx7. By the end of the summer I should have saved 10k by the end of the year 20k and I will probably have my parents take out loan. The personal finance guys already know how that works, my parents will pretty much own the car and I will give them the money for the bill, they pay it ect. I'm really thankful for my parents though, they are great people. The only reason I even have a chance of getting an rx-7 is because of them
I hope you get your rx7 bro
Thank you This help a lot
Awesome video👍
Awesome vid!!!!
I bought a new one in 1988. 3 years later the dealer replaced the engine block. Drove it 5 miles after picking it up and had flames 20 feet in the air.
Great tips bud👍🏻🇨🇦
Do any of you guys daily these? I picked up one a month back and used it as a daily since then and it runs great (I'm literally in love with it lol) but it gets so much attention at school and in public im like scared that someone is gonna try and steal it. Anyone else have this problem?
Someone is selling it for 3k near me. Is it worth it? I know the price is ok and the car aswell but is it worth driving daily and a good first car?
@@carti9533 if you got money for oil and gas, and about 3k in savings in case of a rebuild, then yes
i really am jealous cuz i wanna drive one already
Get a viper system. Parked dashcam & trackers. These are very easy to steal
great video
GREAT video
I’m buying one for my channel this week
Great video
Check the coolant reservoir for residual oil or a film of oil, could be a bad seal
Thanks for the video. I might have an opportunity to buy a 1990 convertable, so am looking out for any pointers.
What I would give to have been born 20 years earlier. This is my favorite car and i'd love to be able to get my hands on one someday, problem being that I barely know anything about maintaining a car like this and would probably do it disservice. A man can dream though..
Are you looking for one Rx7? Have one for sell in excellent condition
your videos have alot of good information, you just speak quickly and its hard to understand sometimes
If I spoke slower, this 14 minute video would be a 3 part 45 minute video lol.
i appreciate the response, and maybe its just me but its not so much about the speed of your talking its just sometimes slurred together if that makes sense? not at all trying to talk shit. just constructive criticism
Oh no, I've heard it all my life. Any time I've slowed down to talk, I sound like an idiot, so I stick to speaking fast lol.
Rotors Magazine it kind of sounded like you had cotton in your mouth and that made it hard to catch some things.
I never have any issues understanding him
There's a 240sx AND an fc in my neighborhood that both look like they need some love, every now and then I go ride my bike to check if they're still there. Hopefully one day when I have enough money I can take one off their hands. (really want the fc) anyways I'll be back here in a couple years if that does happen
thanksforthevid!
great videos
IMO as long as the body is straight buy it!
The appreciating nature of the vehicle will more than outrun the cost to purchase and rebuild the motor.
yo what's the camera?THE SHOT LOOKS LIT AF
I would love to see a fd version of this video
Man where did you get that shirt? great vid as usual.
Thanks!
I want one so bad still saving up 🙏
(the shifter. like you said it was made in the 80's and they are getting older every day. had an MA70supra and the shifter was so sloppy it made me sick.... before internet, i paid 30 bucks for a teflon cup to go on the ball of the bottom of the shift lever..... less than an hour to install.... tried that tick on my 2001 VW jetta waggon, took all day......)
Dam I wish I would have had this video before I bought my 91 NA with bad compression :( best tip- take the car to redline during the test drive!! And of course compression test
Alex Martinez lmao the last time I redlined my FC one of my gaskets in my exhaust system blew up.
I've had 4 2nd gen and not one of them had a smoothly functioning sunroof. My last was a 10th Anniversary. That car is now on my wifes ring finger. Happily married, but damn I miss that car...
extremely informative like always, thank you. quick question, since you brought up the smoke. im new fc owner. my car does throw white/blue smoke on cold start, well at times. but aftef warming up nothing. revs up nicely but does throw smoke when i red line it. my car was sitting for 8 years before i bought it. you thing it might be carbon build up?
It is normal for a rotary engine to let out a few puffs of oil smoke (grey, dark blue) when it is started. This is due to the side oil seals staying in one position and allowing oil to seep past. It isn't anything to really worry about, as long as it does not continue for more than a few seconds. If it does, suspect the oil o-rings as starting to wear/fail.
I'm in for that compression testing video with a piston gauge. where are you guys located? I'm possibly going rotary in my miata soon
Next week
unknown1creature I'm putting a 13b in a maita too.
(sunroof rust must be a mazda thing.... my first gen had the removable roof, and the surround was so gone.... bubbled and rusty to hell and gone.... but maybe the car lived on the beaches of galveston for a while? salt on the roads will kill any sheet metal, but the wonderful sunshine of a beach will eat it as well.... salty air....)
1)The wipers controller module switch behibd speedo cluster has 2 internal relays that fail..fix is replacement off the circuit board for sealed omron ones.
2)The top engine mount TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) also fails over time giving a shitty uneven idle and bucking on deceleration.
I had a 1990 rx7 (S5) and another thing to look for in the interior is a pretty obvious one but the retractable seatbelts! They go out pretty commonly. and if it was fixed look at the pillars and check if they were cracked. my driver side went but luckily it retracted almost all the way back.
i adore these videos btw man! looking to buy another n/a fc. such a blast to drive!
Consistently low compression (4bar in my case) on 1 rotor= rusted thru iron/s and possibly weak apex seal springs
I have an 80 yr. old female neighbor with an 87 sitting idle in her driveway, I'm watching videos to determine if i want to make an offer. always thought rotaries were loosers.
@BROTORS I'm looking at picking up an 86 fc rx7. It isn't wanting to start right now. I had been planning on getting it for a project car. Would it be worth spending the money on it as a project car?
Thanks
I guess I have a quick question. I'm looking at an 88 Rx7 10ae as a trade for my sc400. And because I want more of a track car i am considering it. And was wondering your thoughts on rx7 track/autocross car. Also lets say i wanted to make 300 whp. What i'm I looking at todo? I say 300 because i've been told that's a good number to keep a 13BT at? also the car has 130k on it the guys says its been rebuilt. All of this is if the engine has good compression.
My 10AE is getting a rebuild because of oil control rings. That sounds bad...Rebuild was the expectation and the goal is to look like a stock 10AE but blow away a stock FD.
i miss my 87 fc so much :(
thanks!
Good stuff RM. I may have missed it, but I don't think you mentioned that you're running an S6 REW engine, ..or is it the S4 keg but with the S6 FMIC and intake?
bbrudnic it's a 13B-RE with ported REW intake
AH! Thank you! ..Just watched another one of your videos where you talk about the engine more.
Great insight, speech was normal speed; most likely people are dumb at comprehending words or can't hear well. This just further justifies me getting a 944 than a RX7 rotary engine lol.
That’s a sick 10ae
Rough idle? Seen this in an ad, yet he says the engine was rebuilt
i had a 87 rx 7 black beauty custom wheels
Lrb speed hell yeah shout-out for Miata rear finish panel and aluminum under tray
Can you buy rotary compression testers at any auto parts stores? Or do you have to order them online?
This is my dream car. I dont know why. But it just is.
Hello.
I got an S5 and car smokes a bit until it gets warm, then no smoke at all. Also little bit of water comes out of exhaust. I know small amount of water in exhaust is normal for petrol engines but is the little bit of smoke normal when the engine is cold?
Also when I drive uphill the car sometimes stutters, misfires maybe? Only happens uphill. (I adjusted TPS to correct values after this problem so it might be solved)
What is the reason for occasional misfires? On idle it only happens once in a while until the engine is warm.
I bought it with 117000 miles on it, is there a chance the engine was rebuilt or can it still be the original one without rebuild? It starts without problems both cold and warm.
Thanks in advance!
I had the fully loaded all ops gxl. Nice car but non turbo. White color.
damn u got that rythem down!!! 12:30
I am looking to buy a 1988 RX7. It has a slow coolant leak. Can't tell where it is coming from. I am just looking to buy it. Should I be concerned?
