CHANGES TO STEALTH GTI: Camping with a GTI?

  • My channel is slow-moving because I don't do much with the car besides commuting since I'm mostly finished with my mods. I'm planning some changes to Stealth GTI: I'm interested in camping with eventual expansion into overlanding. This could lead to more CZcams content from me. I'll start my endeavor with my GTI: "Run what you brung!" It could be interesting to outfit the car as a camping platform. No, I won't sleep inside. The GTI is just too small.
    I hope to include my wife on these trips when she's able to travel. Our first few trips will be hotel, cabin, or other excursions that should allow us to ease into a camping or overlanding lifestyle. Our decision to buy a 4x4 will come later, much later. Remember, I'm the "I don't need a pickup truck" guy. I may choose a pickup for overlanding, but that doesn't mean I'll use it for moving loads. Anything I buy will be for adventure.
    I'm currently considering a Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited, a Gladiator Unlimited, a Tacoma, or a 4Runner. Obviously, these vehicles are very different from one another, each with their own pros and cons. I have plenty of time to make a decision.
    I've written a companion article and shared it at wp.me/p7YnQB-1i9.

    Love it. Just recently picked up a Golf Alltrack to road trips and camping myself. Looking forward to your progress.

      We're starting from nothing except for the car. So it will take some time to gear up and get out. But I hope to find it invigorating. Thanks for visiting! -Scott

    Perfect timing, as my wife and I are doing a 2-month, 6k mile road trip of the Western US this summer in my Mk7 GTI. We too wanted to camp, but we also haven't camped in decades, and I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a cargo box and all the camping supplies only to be noob campers on a huge trip and end up hating ourselves. So I'm really curious to see how your experiences turn out.

      Thanks for the comments! And good luck on your trip! Time off is scarce, so I'm not sure when we'll be able to tackle another extended trip. We'll "train" to camp locally and see how our interest grows. I think progress will be a little slow since we have much to buy or acquire... but we'll get there. Thanks for visiting. -Scott

      @@StealthGTI Thanks Scott! I hear you on "training" locally and acquiring gear slowly. We've decided to do the same, most likely borrowing friends gear and stuffing the GTI full to decide what we like/don't like and what we wish we had before we put down a bunch of cash on our own stuff. 73's

    Very interested in this idea. I know a lot of people might have rude comments about “How to” but as long as your having fun why not?

    • @StealthGTI

      Thanks for your comment! I haven't noticed any negative comments... not about the car or my pursuits, anyway. Most know I'm not after "cool status," so they hardly find it worth their time to say anything. I'm a bit stalled with our camping plans at the moment due to several life changes. Plus, it's getting hot. There's no fun in laying in a tent and sweating all night. HAHA! But we'll get there eventually. I will slowly outfit over the summer and then be ready to do a weekender by fall. Thanks for visiting! -Scott

    Ok I like this, I my self have a mk6 gti so this will be interesting as I want to get into camping and over landing in the future and looking into the Jeep gladiator but I would like to see also what can be done on a gti
    Exciting

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  Před 5 lety

      Joserubenvega - Good to see I'm not the only one considering this in a GTI. HAHA! I, too, have been watching the Gladiator. I also have the 4Runner and Tacoma on my short lists. They're all very different vehicles with different compromises between comfort and capability. But they're all $$$$$! Back to the GTI, my camping plans are delayed due to some life changes, but I"m still making some progress on outfitting. I'm nearly finished with a rear seat delete mod that features storage beneath a pair of doors. I guess all I need to buy is a tent and a sleeping bag to get into a crude overnight setup. I want to wait for the heatwave to pass, first. ;-) Thanks for visiting! -Scott

    • @joserubenvega
      @joserubenvega Před 5 lety +1

      StealthGTI the Tacoma was on my list until I sat on one and do to it not having a height adjuster on the seat I didn’t like the low seat height and I sat on the gladiator and I liked the seating on that better. They are getting expensive but at least your getting a vehicle that can be considered a multi purpose vehicle that has more than one function. And the gladiator is the only convertible of the bunch and I think if I can’t justify the gladiator at the end for some reason then I’ll head for the wrangler lol. I do also want the diesel so I’m waiting on that option first. I’ve camped with my gti and it was fun and also on my Harley.
      Hope the life changes were positive man, good luck can’t wait to see!

      @@joserubenvega - Thanks! For now, avoiding a new purchase is about the money. It's hard to justify that price tag until I know I'm using it to its full potential. ;-) Until I make up my mind, I will continue to maximize the use of my GTI. Stay tuned for a video about my weekend of supporting ~400 cyclists with my GTI. :-) Take Care!

      @@joserubenvega - Thanks for sharing that. Oddly enough, the height-adjustable seat in my GTI is slammed to the floor. But the steering wheel and dash are low, too. I'll certainly check the seat heights on anything I test. As for the life changes, they're still developing, but I'm hopeful.

    Have you considered a roof-top tent for your trailer?

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  Před 3 lety

      I have. This idea of camping didn't really take off. I had a lot happening that got in the way of some of my plans, even before lockdowns. Plus, I don't want to buy a tent that's large enough for my wife and I, only to wind up spending most outings in it alone. I still don't think she's up for joining me on these adventures. HAHA! In the mean time, I've been converting my 4x6 cargo trailer into a sleeper. The project stalled last fall. But I'm close to finishing it now. See a playlist at czcams.com/play/PL-eEOW1YZ1aU4QVs7EHU-i-VHXlPm4srQ.html, if you're interested. This trailer will join me on a road trip in soon. So, I have some motivation to get it finished. Thanks for visiting.

    Your the only person who tows a legit trailer with a mk7 gti. Looking at towing a seadoo behind my GTI, its a 430 lbs machine and I wanna say 200 lbs trailer but not a hundred percent sure.
    Are there and cons with the gti while towing, my only other car is an automatic ford focus and I dont trust the transmission.
    Have and parts failed on you that you put the trailer and weight at fault?
    And lastly how much weight have you hauled roughly that was comfortable to have behind the car.

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks! Your SeaDoo/trailer combo will be no problem. My only hesitation would be backing it down a boat ramp; or, more accurately, pulling the load out of the water. The GTI is short and being FWD gives me reason to think it could struggle on a slippery boat ramp. But the load itself on the road is not a problem. I've towed 1500 lbs several times. In fact, I brought 1500-lb loads from CA to VA TWICE. I have two travel playlists about those trips. They're boring, but cover the trailers and loads.
      The only time I didn't like a 1500-lb load was when I was hauling gravel loads during a landscaping project. With gravel, I could not manage my tongue weight to my satisfaction. I think it left the tongue heavier than ideal, but it worked fine. To my knowledge, I have not had any parts fail as a direct result of my towing. Even my slipping aftermarket clutch could be explained by it having over 100,000 miles and not being intended for use with an IS38 upgrade. I wondered if my #3 injector failure could have been a result of towing, but my mechanic doesn't think it was a contributor at all.
      With all of that said, I would not tow a heavy trailer AND load the car with cargo. I wouldn't exceed 1500-lbs total between the car and trailer... although I have done exactly that myself. HAHA! Good luck!

      @@StealthGTI thank you! Really appreciate the response! By the way, as for you clutch, hefty price but id look into it, DKM stage 3 twin disc clutch, i have one and i will say, during the break in period it is quite heavy, but at the end of the summer season (i park mine during winter months and drive a focus 4 door in winter, Canada salty roads) I was used to it and it actually doesnt feel to bad, maybe 50 % heavier than factory which is super light as you know. 660 ft-lbs of torque capable.
