Burying Ditches And Graders Too!

- When water flash floods from a snow melt or a high rainfall storm it flows down low spots washing out soil. Once the ditch is made it only gets deeper each year. With a grader you can pull the sides in and create a passage way for equipment to drive across. Best way to prevent this type of erosion is to have crop planted in those drainage's so the root structures will hold soil in tact.

Very true!
In my youth I worked on family farm, generally father and myself. When I got stuck or something broke , dad would not come over for a few hours or days to help. I never understood why leave me not working doing nothing. I was never paid for family farm, so would learned to leave and do something else.
I'm amazed at these huge farms, I've worked in Australia on wheat farm, huge, yet again I got stuck and broke things. Farmer was never mad as my dad , he came directly there to keep tractor running.
I learned alot in the outback, respect, when having to work 18 hr days.
As we had 2 drivers , I was surprised when I as a rookie was asked to keep seeding, while other guy was fired. The farmer answered it's about respect.
I'm putting it on my bucket list to fly over to America to see welker farms in person

In 1970 I was working on a 6,500 acre farm near Raft River, Idaho. One morning it was decided to use an old No. 12 Cat grader to clean ditches. We drove the grader into the main irrigation ditch and chained a D7 Cat on to the front of it and dragged me through the ditch. Talk about a wild ride. I stood more on the wall of the cab than on the floor but we did indeed clean out the ditch.
Man, I thought I was the only one daft enough to get stuck over and over doing the same job! Looks like farmers are the same the world over! Love to you and your family. UK Farmer.
Hey Nick! This project will make things easier for you and your equipment for years to come. Good work! 40+ years ago, we had a HUGE rock in one field that we'd been farming around for quite a few years. So Dad bought some dynamite, blasting caps and fuse wire, dig a hole with a posthole digger and blew a hole alongside the rock. Pushed the rock into the hole, dozed some dirt over it and no more rock! When I was farming, I went up and down the waterways during the seeding process and effectively put 3X the seed and fertilizer in the washout area. It seemed to help with the erosion. Hey Hollywood! Hey Nick, I'm a office jock and have been working on the laptop all morning. I treat myself every once in a while and watch the farm videos. They are fun and interesting to watch. My community used to be agricultural, mostly dairy farms and livestock. I was actively involved in FFA with livestock - many years ago. I'm a person of faith and a candidate for the school board. Whew, sometimes i wish I only only had to get a piece of equipment out of the ditch. It's tough working on a campaign- but I received a word that I should run so I'm rolling with it. Keep on rolling with the videos..
Love seeing old iron working still. Never really understood how a grader works. Enjoy watching guys run them. Almost or is an art.

Strap breaking brought back memories! I have a 6 inch 30 ft strap, I bought when we farmed. It worked great for the equipment we had. Now that we sold the farm after my DAD passed I have no real way of using it to its full potential.. So I have a 6 inch strap for towing out vehicles in the hard Minnesota winter. Over kill? Yes but it works and the back story is pretty cool when people ask me why its so big! I got turned on to your videos from Zach Johnson, MN Millennial Farmer, and I am really loving your content! There is a reason that most farms are passe down through generations. Starting out fresh is.. financially.. quite the hurtle. Equipment never becomes useless until it wears out it just gets moved to other jobs.
One of my neighbours at my cottage owns an old piece of mining equipment that he somehow rebuilt to pull a plow. Just thought it made sense for this comment.
Use a Bud so you can get Compaction and Traction at the same time. And get the tractor 3point fixed to use the Gannon box grader in combination.

vintage grader still gets the job done
Did the same thing this summer with a tractor, discs and a blade. Dropped a front wheel into the ditch unexpectedly and bent the drag long on the right side. Thought I was going to bust the front axle. Nice to have a grader for this kind of work.

It's not the computers at fault, trust me, a well made modern machine is miles ahead of anything we used to have, the problem is the stinking CEOs and interest groups that activate and exist within the companies that make our products.
They make sh*tloads of money, and yet, they want more, and more. How that happens is very simple, when a company reaches the flotation point, AKA maximum potential, the only department that does well, is the one that cuts corners.
Those then are filled to the brim with the scummiest, lowest forms of society to match the nature of the big wigs. Together, they slowly infect various other departments as disgruntled workers either leave or are fired.
Meanwhile the product is low in quality and sold the same price. When that fails, people figuring things out, they start buying other companies, and cannibalizing them, they have even less interest in maintaining the brand regardless of the damage they cost.
As a society, we should implement laws that deny any such kind of behavior, explicit, and in no way alterable by a lawyer's forked tongue.
With no computer you wouldn't see it.

Water is a resource not to be ignored where we come from. Build a big dam in that ditch, contour bank the overflow to the next ditch and build another dam, get a solar pump and pipe it to the houses and have a lush garden in the summer. Then you don’t have to cart water. Wife’s and kids love green gardens in the summer.👍🇦🇺 well you did say leave a comment.

The narrow tires put down more ground pressure then the wide ones! You could have flattened it out with the grader, then wheel packed it. 👍🏼
Pete Parker don’t want /too/ much compaction though, crops don’t like it when the ground is hard.

Our DOT plowed our road in the winter for many year's with the exact same AC grader like that one,big V plow on it.

That would help them with spring wheat, but they need some rain now to be able plant winter wheat.

i see that=the belt on the left is loose.
Can't tighten that style of hub too much. It will pull the bearing in the hub to one side. Which in turn will shell it out. Better off a bit loose

in early 60s on our farm we pickef rocks by hand and dumped them the rock pile …. and builders on the OAHE DAM came outand loaded all the rocks to build the dam

Good video, it is good to see the not so fun stuff as well. Farming is a lot harder than just sitting in the tractor or combine with auto steer on. Bob saved the day again!
Never use a chain cowboy. We had an accident two years ago during spring seeding here in choteau. One of our guys lost his arm when it went through both windows of our tractor. We are dealers in baba ropes All size tow ropes. They work well! Don’t use chains! To dangerous
That's true. This wasn't much of a pull though. If more pull load needed we have 1" cable.
All good fillin those wash areas. Erosion areas are always an area to work on the farm or ranch. Good one Nick!

Our prime ww seeding time is Sept 15. After 30th it's getting late for us to get a strong root started before colder weather begans. So we have decided to forgo seeding, as the earliest the soils would dry out is the second week of Oct. Spring wheat is a great option for next year.

I know farming is hard work, but you guys make it look awesome. My family had a small farm just self sustenance, and I grew up on David Brown and Ford tractors, now I collect and use Sears Garden tractors, but I love machinery. I have an office job, so I get out as much as I can :)
Only two type of people don't get equipment stuck: lairs and people sitting on the couch
And my 52 year old dad that is somehow better at driving than my grandad

Maybe you should have laid a section of drainage tile in the bottom to alleviate the the long term wetness of some of the problem area. A little overseeding with rye grass and a 'casual waterway' could keep it from happening again down the road. Love the videos - keep them coming! (From a long-term Farm Rescue volunteer.)

Considering all the camera angles, this video is a testament to the holding power of the Neodymium Magnets you had to use. Awesome choices of camera placement and another great video to watch.
Why would you pull on your three point when you have a drawbar on your tractor ?
He had a box blade attached. Thus he needs to control the height of the box blade with the 3 point...
I guess with just the hooks on the chain there was noch way to attach it nicely. You need a big shackle for that. Normally the 3 point should withstand that, but when a Bolt is loose there's no chance. Maybe the one sided stress was too much, but we were not there to know the Situation and I wouldn't neglect the safety of the chain connection to have a better positioning.
PS: The Rope was attached to the drawbar. :-)
The first three was from the drawbar pin. The last wasn't too stuck and he hooked the middle of the box. Wasn't much of a pull to get him out.
I watch your videos when ever I can get time to go on the PC. It reminds me of back on the farm in Pennsylvania. Awesome to see the equipment operating Old and New. Great videos. I am also hooked on your Dads videos.
