I think this interpretation is completely valid, and I would love to add onto it.
Why did he become an artist? Why did he choose do this as an exhibit and do so much in order to make a show of it (including inviting in a journalist who he knew would help further proliferate his work), if he only wanted to return to a simpler and happier point in his life? Since this is such a personal thing, why not do it privately, instead of making a spectacle out of it?
I think this episode can be framed as a couple of things. One, as an examination of art and also an example of why some artists do the things they do. When I watched this for the first time, learning about his backstory completely reframed all his past artworks. I think the form of art shown in this episode is fundamentally a way of communication and expression. Sometimes, the best art comes from people who has experienced something they are driven to explore and share their point of view with other people. The first analogue who comes to mind is James Turrell. Turrell is an artist obsessed with light. Every piece of artwork is about working with light, turning light into an object instead of being a medium to reveal other objects, or distort the perception of space using light. One of his pieces that he's been working on for decades (starting in 1974), Roden Crater, is still incomplete. In one interview, he touched upon the ways his experiences with light and his childhood and his origin in quaker faith all blended together. In some ways, I personally view his artwork as a culmination of his religious association with light at childhood and the ways it shaped his perception of the world. In another interview, I think Turrell talked about how understanding perception of light would be the closest he can get to understanding God.
But Turrell became an artist of all things--he chose to share and express his obsession with light with an audience. Some of his artworks seems clearly designed to communicate and share a sense of awe with light and space.
I think Zima is the same way. I think through this lens, Zima is not JUST a person who wished to return to a simpler time. This episode also showcases a very human desire to express oneself. So in light of that, what is Zima's artwork saying? Again, I think the desire to return to a simpler time in his life is a very good and sound interpretation of his artwork.
But I also think back to his previous artworks, and can't help but feel like his final piece of artwork is also a continuation of what he has been saying the entire time. A gorgeous painting of the cosmos, with zima blue at the very center. A gargantuan blue slate towering over viewers. Another solid interpretation is that this artwork is an extension of Zima desperately struggling to recover the important memories he's lost, and these giant artworks make the viewer feel like he did once a upon a time, when those pool slates were as big as the universe to him.
But I also think you can flip this entirely on its head. You can see Zima as someone trying to explore something, but every piece of his artwork is confidently making a declaration on top of his personal exploration. His artwork already knew and understood what he himself was struggling to understand. You can see it in the very first painting. It's no coincidence that the painting is of the universe with zima blue at the center. There's a very simple and literal conclusion you can make:
Zima Blue is in the center of the universe. Zima Blue is the universe. Zima Blue is as important as the universe. It is on par with everything grand. Something as small and as forgotten as Zima Blue is as important as the most awesome things in the world, because Zima Blue makes Zima feel and see the Universe itself. Every part of his artwork is a declaration stating this as fact.
The final Pool piece simply revealed or confirmed that's what he was saying the entire time. And like many pieces of artworks, the more specific and granular/personal its focus is, the more universal it can feel to everyone. Because the full implication of Zima's art portfolio communicates an idea that has been done before, but expresses it in an emotionally novel way: anything you love or fixate on, no matter how mundane or abstract or small, is also as profound as the universe itself because of the way it makes you feel. Embrace the Zima Blue in your life, because it IS the universe and it's the medium in which you can see and experience the universe for what it is. Again, very similar to Turrell and his pursuit of God through light.
This is why I LOVE Zima Blue as an animation short. It somehow manages to tie a complete self-contained story alongside a complete and fulfilling artistic declaration about the universe all in a very short time-frame. Absolutely peak science-fiction storytelling.

@@sciencefantastic Not shallow at all! I think your interpretation is also very important and accurate, in light of what he says at the very end about appreciating a job well done. I think the idea of being able to go back to authentically enjoy things when it was simpler, and Zima being able to actually do it in a way normal humans can't, is also essential to understanding his artwork.

This actually is the transformation of a human through the years. As kids, all we wanted was to grow up and because of that, we didn’t understand that we were living the best years of our lives. As we grow up, things started to become more complex and therefore, less enjoyable. You know how the elders say that they would give everything to be at our age? They wanted things to be simplier, they would do everything they can just to have one moment without any care, ignoring anything that doesn’t effect us. I love that this was his final piece, because it can be a metaphor for human beings living in a world full of materialism. You can be born for a purpose, but other people will try to steer you in a different direction, and then you start listening to them and proceed to do the same. You drift away from your purpose, by trying to learn about the world and what it wants before you learn about yourself. Zima Blue returns back to his original form in the pool, and if you remove Zima Blue from the pool and try to modify him again, you ruin the art piece. Same can be said for people. If you remove a person from what they truly want in life, then you ruin the person.

This work of art resonates with me more than any other. As someone who's spent their life searching for higher meaning, dissatisfied with the reality I'd been given. Studying quantum physics, special relativity, the properties of space time, it's like I never got any closer to an answer. Because the answer was never some complex formula, some astronomical realisation that takes years to understand. It's the foundation of the self that is the answer. Whether the self is an illusion or not doesn't matter, nothing matters. The self is no different than a rock or the waves on the sea, or the tiles lining a swimming pool. It requires no purpose, it simply is, and being anything but content with that reality would be rejecting truth.

You said "nothing matters" when the opposite is part of the truth. The self is no different from the rock, the waves and the tiles, yes, but none of those things exist alone in an empty void.

How rare it is to find something that is so short, yet so moving. What an amazIng piece of sci-fi, makes me want to go back not just to the golden days of the genre with both its existential themes and pure technological speculation, but also to a period when I myself knew what I wanted to do and felt the sureness of even small actions. But I suppose being able to do that would lessen this bittersweet feeling, which itself is worth something in the end...

This is basically in line with Rousseau's philosophy. In his opinion, the more humans stray away from their wild nature and gain knowledge which they transform into progress, the more they become unhappy and unsatisfied, trying to fill holes that can't be filled with goods and consumerism. Zima returns to its 'primal' state so that he can leave behind all the worries that come with learning to contemplate life for other purposes beyond satisfying primary needs.

Ironic that in humanity's quest to advance so far ahead, none of them ever thought of asking what the machine wanted. It understands its most basic and original purpose in life, is the one that it needed. It knew it wasn't built for greatness, and rejected all these upgrades that were plugged into it, just because humans weren't satisfied or content.

    I don't know but what I felt is ,
As we go more forward in life , reach great heights , and when we reach the oldage , we really don't need the money nor the luxury, we just wanna be happy .
Then we think about small things we do as a child and how it made us happy for doing simple things .
So here he's going HOME , his search ends .......
HOME is where we grow up isn't it ?

In his search for truth he found that there isn't any. But in the process of finding it he burdened himself with awareness, ambition and the never ending thirst for knowledge. Such a restless existence can become tiresome when you can live for eons. So, he reverted to his primal self, to be able to enjoy simples things with the need for having a reason or meaning to do it.

From abstraction to practical. Brilliant. I'd argue it displays the essence of art and how it evolved from the work of man.
