I just got my Gerber Armbar Drive today.
Personally, the changes I wish they'd make are:
      1. A much stronger slip joint tension for the drive portion.
      2. A much better included scissors is needed. I'd love to see the scissors upgraded to D2 or Nitro-V steel.
      3. Deep carry pocket clip (Hackitcal on Etsy sells a nice deep carry pocket clip). OR, instead of a pocket clip, a simple keychain loop would work - they would just need to weld the metal knife tip (which almost connects already), then add a small optional split loop key ring.
      4. Swap the reamer tool for a for a precision multibit driver with a SIM removal tool on one side, and a precision screwdriver for glasses on the other. If that tool could also be combined with a hook blade that could be used for parcel opener, and emergency seatbelt cut rescue tool, that would be amazing.
      5. If the blade could be swapped with a scalpel holder, that would help to prevent the need to sharpen or replace the blade.
      6. Also, if Gerber could skeletonize the metal frame to lighten it further, that would be awesome.

Awls may be a bit over in the “compass” category for urban EDC but for repairs in the bush they absolutely stand tall & own their space

I prefer my SAK super tinker or Explorer....as usual good concept from Gerber but alas no follow through on implementation!

I wish they would still make the Yeoman as I find the Explorer too thick for EDC.

I recently got a Nextool Knight that is similar to this one, only with much better designed scissors and a pocket clip. It doesn't have a replaceable drive head, but does have a Philips head, flathead driver, can opener, cap lifter, mini file, and a tiny glass breaker. The awl is longer than the Gerber's, but needs sharpening out of the box. The tools have some unique ways of opening that are tricky the first time, but once you've got the hang of it it's easy. I did have to lightly sand the inside of the blade opening hole to round it a bit. Not too sharp, but more than I liked. Just a little square of sandpaper and 60 seconds of work.
At nearly half the price of the Gerber, it's worth the money, I think. Been carrying it, and even though the clip is on the wide side of the tool, when in the pocket and sitting down, the wide side falls against the leg, and it doesn't feel too bulky in the pocket. A very good left side pocket tool to compliment your primary folder, though I'm probably going to make up a pocket pouch for it and a flashlight so I can carry it all in a cargo pocket.

Always go with a company that invented their own tool. There are enough such companies you can find what you're looking for. SUch companies are always more environmentally sustainable.
To reward plagerists and copies undermines creatives and the future potential of all humanity. Unless you think someone should take credit for your ideas and steal your labour and slave YOU

Lots of overlap if you carry a SAK with this, and you still don't have pliers. I would consider something like a 4 to 6 inch size Knipex Cobra W.P. Pliers to make a more capable kit with either the SAK or the Gerber.

Thanks for the comment! Yes, this is definitely not meant to compliment the SAK. I do have the Knipex Cobra XS (as an ongoing test for subscribers) 😁 czcams.com/video/jJpZmWXufB4/video.html

I think a showdown between this Armbar Drive, a Leatherman Skeletool or Free P2, and a comparable SAK like that Pioneer X, a Compact, or a Super Tinker.

If you are in an area that allows a locking blade and are newer to tools the gerber is the safer bet. The alox is just as robust, more rust proof, and w/o the lock is faster to deploy and close with a better design. The blade is actually tapered and the grind and heat treat is exquisite making it slice better, cut above grade, and sharpen easier. That said those new to tools, clumsy, impatient, unskilled, weak fingered etc have a good chance to harm themselves if they ham fist non-locking blades.

I like the idea of a folding inline bit driver that can take standard 1/4 in bits but as it has a locking blade - which I can't EDC here in the UK - I didn't buy this one. I think that all the other tools on the Victorinox are a bit better.

I like the design of the Armbar especially the socket driver, but I am not a fan of Gerber. I like the Farmer more than Pioneer because the Farmer has a saw. I would think a knife called a Pioneer would have a saw too as the word Pioneer means explorer.

    • @urbanknifeguy
      @urbanknifeguy  Před 10 měsíci +1

A pioneer moves around so doesn't have time a saw. A farmer stays at one place so has time to saw.
