    Great video! The Compact is great. Companion adds more weight and width but more features. IMO the tradeoff is worth it. Much better than the Climber. One layer thicker than the Compact, but you get a file and package opener and awl. You lose can opening but this is not a camping knife. In fact, I added a Cybertool layer to my Companion. Takes the screwdriving options from 2 to 10. The knife is about the size of a Ranger (23mm and 118g).

    Carry what you need and need what you carry! Some people need instant access to pliers. I don't. I have pliers at home, the car and in my messenger bag. I've never needed pliers quicker than I can retrieve one of those. YMMV.

    Yeah ...... Put me down for one of each. Really great knives, the both of them. I don't mind the cheapo (but super functional) plastic sheath for the Garberg. And, it goes without saying, the Ember sheath is a wonder to behold. I say, get 'em both and you're covered. Now, on to a good camp kitchen knife, w/flat grind, stainless, maybe 4 in. blade, drop point. Something easy to clean up and store. I saw a Ganza (Chinese) that seemed to fill the bill. Unbelievably ... uh, inexpensive. A Victorinox Venture for 5 times the price but with a crappy sheath.

    1075 is underrated. With proper heat treatment you can get it just as hard as 1095, but is tougher and less brittle than 1095. Bottom line, you cannot get carbon steel any harder past the eutectoid level, which is 0.77. Adding more carbon just makes it more fragile with no increase in hardness. Out in the field, a wear failure is no big deal, unlike a brittleness failure (breakage), which is catastrophic. Better to be on the safe side. 1075 rules. A friend of mine back in high school said he had a Ka-bar (1095) that broke on him. Never forgot that story...

Would add two items: 1) packets of electrolyte salts (they can be kept for years), Bug out situation is physically demanding, them slats will come in useful to keep energy levels up. 2) Packets of drinks, hydration and energy. These need to be rotated, as they have shelve life. Good content.

A notepad and pen. Still room for more, but i only want to include things i might actually use.

    We live in the greatest time in all history for pocket knives and knives in general. why NOT have a knife with "Super Steels" think it's foolish to carry a knife with shit steel that will have to be sharpened often. A knife is probably the Most important EDC in your pocket ....if your going to be a bear, be a Grizzly.

    • @urbanknifeguy
      @urbanknifeguy Před 4 dny

      Thanks for the comment! It did make me think, but while the availability can be taken advantage of, it does not follow that the positive properties of supersteels outweigh the cost of the knives for all users. In addition, there are midway options that are not super but better than the lowest end steels. Some might prefer to get 2 or 3 decent knives instead of 1 supersteel knife. But, if the practicality of budget is not a consideration, I would have to agree with you.

    I have a Victorinox Manager that I haw clipped to my pocket basically all the time. It covers 95% of what I need day to day. I wish it wasn't discontinued. It's a nice middle ground between the Rambler and Midnight Manager. When I go out, I also have a tin with medications, bandaids, breath mints, a glasses cleaner cloth, and a Rovyvon A3 flashlight, plus a few other odds and ends. If I think I need it, I also have a Tntor 5000 mAh super light flat battery pack with built in USB C cable for my phone. In practice I rarely take it, but it's with my wallet and keys if I feel I do. I think a 55mm Victorinox plus customized Altoids sized tin is a very reasonable carry for almost anyone, and a good place to start.

    Sometimes I worry about recommending any kind of slip joint or a sak. A couple people I know would use it incorrectly and close the blade on themselves. They didn't grow up using blades and had a hard time opening the tools. Anyone else agree?

    • @66cutlassgm21

      For sure, I had a friend that complained about swiss army knives not having good lock because every time he pryed or scraped something with the back of it it would close on him. I told him he's using the wrong kind of tool, for the kind of jobs he does (mechanics mostly) you want a regular knife with a decent lock, not a slip joint multi-tool.

      @66cutlassgm21 I guess if you didn't get a sak as a kid, people just don't get it??? I haven't closed a slip joint on my finger before but I did get a blood blister from one of the flat heads though. I was working on a loose screw at the wrong angle and it closed. I like to inform new knife people but it always goes out the other ear I think
