  • In this video I install a new clutch, and put the engine back into the 1989 Montero. I had a few issues getting it started and running right but by the end of it I had it back on the road!

"do you even lifter tick, bro?" .....LOVE MY Gen 1 Montero - but my god, that lifter tick is probably the single most annoying thing about it - but even when they're running perfectly they tick more than most vehicles...they're just loud in general. , second most annoying is the weird idle gremlins that seem to always come with the 88-91 3.0 models. HUGE props to you for not just pulling the car into the driveway and telling the customer to come get it when you ran into the block leak issue - - So many mechanics just refuse to work on these to begin with and none of the ones I know who do accept gen 1 montero jobs would ever keep going for ANYTHING other than specifically what they agreed to......and I get it - they don't want a project sitting in their shop for weeks for it's frustrating when something breaks while it's being worked on and they just won't take on the extra work for a customer willing to pay.

damn im glad im not the only one experiencing those ticks and idle gremlins... seems to be a normal thing for these 3.0 12v

It’s good to know that these 1st Gen’s are pretty straightforward to work on. I am looking at buying one this weekend that has had a lot of work done to it.

Looks like this job fought you till the end. Great job though figuring out the issues and another Montero is on the road.

I thought priming the lifters was the opposite - as long as theyre good. That is, you're meant to squeeze out oil so theyre easy to compress by hand, then the oil pressure pumps them up again but when the engine does it theyre pumped to the right height for each individual rocker. When you put them in hard the heights could be off hence causing a tick again.

Oh interesting! If you are correct that would make some sense. Idk, it’s been two years since I rebuilt one of these and I thought I remembered that you wanted to bleed all the air out

Good job, Brian. Too bad about the radiator, I greatly dislike the aftermarket plastic ones.

Yeah not idea to have to scrap the old one, but apparently it was beyond saving. This one should hold up just fine for now though
