Are you planning on upgrading your motherboard? What are you going for?
but also better mobo has better socket - so i have to buy CPU too, and then you discover your new CPU works on different frequency - so you gotta buy new memory too.
what I'm getting at , is that you'd better buy new system outright when older one is no more a current generation.
and swithing mobo while it's not old enough yet is a waste of money.
Nick Grabeck As we say, it's one of the most intensive bits of PC surgery you can do, and not far off building a new PC, but if you've got a good SSD, decent cooler, and a quality graphics card you might not necessarily want to swap your entire system for a new one.
Is it necessary to reinstall windows after upgrading to new motherboard?
Chaidir Chalaf If you sign into Windows 10 with a Microsoft account then it registers your license. That means when you log in again after upgrading your hardware Windows will grab the necessary drivers and should retain license support too.
If it doesn't grab the right LAN network drivers then you might need to grab them from the board manufacturer's website from another machibs and update them manually.
Hello there as been news that Intel are going to be releasing to Intel 8 core CPUs at the end of the year will ryzen still be the best value ?????

That low percentage got me

Thanks guys, I'm comfortable replacing everything in my PC but I've never replaced a motherboard before. Seems a lot more delicate than other components, getting a new cpu and motherboard on monday so a good choice to bookmark this vid. You earned a sub too!
Nemesi Yay! Thank you :)
Two years after video release, you guys made me conformatble with swapping my mobo. Thanks for the very clear video!
Thank you so much! I was stressing about applying my new Motherboard and CPU so much and this just answered all my questions.
This is a fantastic video, really informational and thorough. Hope your channel keeps growing!
The windows login tip is excellent.... something I would have missed in a hardware focused task. Thank you! :-)
Really simple and helpful thank you
Thank you for this video; I've upgraded mine to an ASUS ROG B450F, this video took away almost all of the worry for me. The tip about the Windows account was particularly helpful, as it's something I'd otherwise have missed

The most annoying part of replacing a motherboard is plugging the power buttons back in, those wires are generally not labeled or the labels aren’t descriptive so you end up plugging the power button into the wrong socket so it won’t turn on

Switching my motherboard is probably the scariest thing

I think most of us are comfortable with the mechanical disassembly and assembly of the PC. the part I would like to get more info on is the software side of things. for example, I want to use my old ssd with windows 10 installed on a new board. i have my pc set to my web account and that seems easy enough but their is always something amiss when it comes to software syncing and stuff. can someone link me to a vid or forum post that is more focused on the software side of installing a new board?
I have been looking for a video that answers your question but have yet to find one, did you find the answer to this?
@Dhars you find the answer

I have built many PCs in the past and always start fresh with a new case and all, I find this easiest. However I have never just upgraded the internals around a case that I've already had for 5 years. This is going to be a harder task I think versus just starting fresh

How would you go about removing your CPU air cooler from your cpu and swapping it out with a liquid cooler
This was really helpful. If upgrading from 1151 to am4 do i need new ram? Heard it doesnt matter because both are ddr4 but idk
You should be okay. Early Ryzen and AM4 boards were a little funny about memory, but subsequent microcode changes have alleviated most memory problems.
I am a bit late but should i remove some drivers when swapping mobos? And what about switching parts from pre build system to custom build with differend motherboard?
Store everything you want to carry over on a non OS drive, then factory reset, then install windows on the new mobo
Thank you
I love your videos. super helpful. Keep doing what you're doing!! Thanks!
I'm planning on upgrading my motherboard and my case at the same time but I don't know if I should stay in kabylake gen or go for coffelake and buy a new cpu
Im upgrading from AMD to a new msi z370 gaming plus board and a new i58400,do i need to remove any drivers etc before i do the upgrade or just follow your video? Thanks.
For christmas I asked for a new cpu but it needed a “newer” motherboard, so thanks
Do you have to buy a new m.2? or are you able to use the old one from the previous motherboard??
Clear and concise video guys, great job. So you regularly swap motherboards without first uninstalling old MB drivers ? I noticed a couple of other people had asked this as well.
Thanks, and honestly, yes we do. It's maybe not manufacturer-recommended but Windows is now very good at picking the right drivers for you. It is probably worth downloading your new board's drivers before you replace it - you might not have the right LAN or network drivers in place when you restart otherwise.
@@PCGamesN , thanks. That makes sense to me about the LAN drivers.
This was great! My only question is how to I install windows on the new pc after booting it up after the replacement?
can i make a back up of my data and just transfer it? All apps and docs as if windows was never re-installed?
Remember to look at your manual to see which pcie slot you should use.
Hello! I’m looking into upgrading motherboards in case my old i5 gets a bit rusty and needs to be upgraded.
Can I skip Step 1 if I’m willing to fresh-install?
PLEASE HELP ME do you need to do anything with bios and internal stuff etc
Yeah, they completely missed that bit didn't they! I know this is too late, but you will need to go into Bios and set your boot drive. Bios will refer to the drives by their model names and manufacturer so you'll just have to figure out which one is your C: boot drive from your old PC, which should be really easy in most cases/.

Anything I should know before changing the motherboard? Like uninstalling old drivers or backing up data. Is it ok to replace the motherboard without worrying about that stuff? I’m super lost!
Do i have do delete any driver files if i swap my old as rock with an asus strix one?
If I replace a Micro ATX with a standard, will I need new standoffs and screws or should the ones from the micro work?
Also before putting the MB in, if you have a m.2 it’s easily to put it in before swapping. Awesome video tho
Do I need to remove the old motherboard drivers first before I need to upgrade?
What about the storage drives? Should I reset my SSD/HDD before making these upgrades?
Any answers?
Definitely dont reset your storage?? Why would you do that? If you intend on keeping your OS. And content?? I never have anyway.
i did everything in the video in regards to activating windows, everything works as it should but windows will not activate with the new motherboard, has something changed since this video? like you cant activate on a different motherboard? it seems like the only way for me to get rid of this watermark would be to buy windows and do a fresh install which is what i was trying to avoid the whole

Ahh ok, so as long as I registered my computer with a Microsoft account I should not have a problem with my hard drive stuff?. Lately I started my computer being I had to turn it off, however, it struggled going back on and turned off several times then restarted then finally went on but sent me to boot menu to do so.I built this rig many years ago and I am still running an i52500k cpu. I am scratching my head trying to figure out now that I finally got it up and running is it the PSU? or the motherboard?. I replaced the PSU a few years back and Video card. So I am unsure what to do here because I don't want to swap out motherboard just yet when I have no problem running games. I am very hesitant in swapping motherboard out being I fear of losing everything on my 3 hard drives. Could you possibly tell me some things on this?.
may be the ram if you overclocked it
Thanks the first tip really saved my ass! Subscribed!
I have a OEM license of windows, do I need to buy a new one for my new motherboard or can I transer the license some how?
Metalman google “cloning”. There are free software (Macrium I think.) that lets you make a clone of absolutely everything on your computer including windows. That’s one way to transfer windows as well as all your data over.
Shouldn't you remove certain drivers before shutting down so there is not a conflict at boot up?
Quick question where does power connector go?
do you have to upgrade your cpu and or gpu if your getting a new mobo?
*Question*?
I was watching a another video and the said that you should uninstall drivers associated with your old motherboard.
Is that required in your process ?
No need. Your new motherboard will automatically detect the new software. I know what video you're talking about and he just did it to be cautious. No worries about that.
Hi PCGamesN,
Do you recommend I uninstall the old motherboard drivers and gpu drivers etc before I do the upgrade to avoid driver issues or will windows 10 sort them out. I am running version 1803 currently!
Please could you get back to me, thanks!
@Dawid Jandzinski You know you could have given him any answer dumbass.
my concern is the installed drivers of the old motherboard to the NVMe (whew the os is installed). should i uninstall all the drivers of the old motherboard before installing it to the new motherboard ?
I’m upgrading one of my budget builds
From a asrock b450m hdv r4.0 to a
Asrock b450m pro4 I’ve checked and it’s compatible with everything else in the pc
But is there anything I should know before doing so ?
The only unfortunate thing that I’ve seen that people say you should do when replacing your motherboard is to do a wipe/clean install of windows. But this literally wipes all of your data and I got too much of it so I want to avoid this as much as possible
So, do you fresh install windows first? or once you have installed the new mobo, cpu and ram? I'm converting to an amd mobo, cpu from an intel setup and not sure what to do with my ssd which has windows on it and my hdd that has everything else on it. Do you guys know of a article that tells me how to do it?
If u got oem windows I think u need to buy a new version of windows
I thought it was going to be way harder cause I got a couple extra cables that my motherboard gave me and I was confused on how to use them but I'm guessing I could probably just ignore them and just plug in all the cables that was connected to my old motherboard.
