I went out to a "Farmer's Market" with my grand daughters. The plan was, to shoot them standing still while the crowd filtered around them. I used 100 ISO film and a ND 3 and ND 2 filters stacked. I had calculated for 1 to 2 seconds. I realized after getting the film developed, 2 things. 1: my 5 year old GD can't stand still that long, and 2: two seconds is a long time. The crowd would move enough at 1/2 to 1 second. The 5 year is older now and is into photography, so she should be able to stand for that long. Long exposure shots are fun.
Actually, I've gotten both of them into photography and they both have Canon Powershots.
Given that (we) are all in the digital age of photography, why can people not comprehend the basic laws of light (Physics) ? It hasn't changed; the subsequent generations are having to learn the basics all over again. Like you Roger, I began with Analogue & moved onto Digital, & I still shoot both; the only difference being, the latter is immediate. Ultimately, I prefer the challenge of the former...but hey, each to their own. Excellent presentation - Thank you !

I use a 10 stopper but only with digital. Film is too expensive to waste 😂👍📸
Great video as usual, I use a Hoya ND1000 & Visico CPL on digital cameras and I should get out to try long exposure on the film cameras as well.
HOYA are a good brand. Happy medium. I have many HOYA filters. They are good.
You might laugh at losing your tripod but I lost mine recently in Tokyo doing night photos. I left it down, got distracted and didn't notice I forgot it till the next morning. 🙃
I left mine in the middle of a forest once, and only noticed after finding another composition. Luckily, it was Winter and I was able to trace my steps back by following the boot tracks I'd left in the snow.
Dumbest loss I ever had were a set of filters. Put them on the trunk while fixing my bag, forgot where (or even if) I moved them after that, drove to an empty lot then came back home. Retraced my steps and couldn't find them. I assume they slid off the car and someone picked them up in the 15 minutes I was gone.

Been looking to do long exposure with film for some time. I have Ilford’s film reciprocity calculations. You have inspired me to do something about it.

@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Did some trial shots today at Hill Head. Now with Parker’s in Southampton for developing - I used XP2. I’ll see the results once I get the negatives back. Fingers X’d. I used a 10 stop ND and applied Ilford’s reciprocal figures.
ND8 = 2,4,8 3 stops
ND 1000 = 2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512,1024. 10 stops

I always though ISO 12 or 6, sounded so incredible slow. But ISO 12 is"only" three stops slower than ISO 100.
Anyhow nice video, always nice seing you out shooting.
I think it sounds ridiculously slow as most of the time we are handheld. Only 2 stops away from PAN F 50.
Some nice shots there Rog. The locking and leg extension mechansm of that tripod reminds me of a Velbon Ultra Maxi L that I had and gave to my daughter a few years ago. It didn't cost anywhere near the asking price for this new kid on the block though!!! Just for information about ND filters, 8X ( or 8 times normal esposure time= 3 stops ) is 2 to power 3, 16X is 2 to power 4( 4 stops ) , 32X is 2 to power 5 etc etc, so this way it is easy to work out what all these mean. On the other hand ND 0.3 is one stop of light loss, ND 0.6 is two stops of light loss, ND 0.9 is three stops of light loss etc etc. Hope this helps.
LOL I won't remeber that Lensman but thanks for the scientific explanation. The reason I said that in the video is because when I got that ND8 Filter about 15 years ago I thought I was getting 8 stops. Nope! 3. ha ha
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I am not to blame Rog, you would have thought that they just named these things the simple way, 1 Stop, 2 Stops, 3, Stops, etc, but no they had to be over the top and confusing.
use 1.3 power for exposures longer than 1 sec.
Have been debating getting a high-power ND filter to do this (but like you said, the big LEE and NiSi filters are quite expensive, but I usually try to get the 100x100mm filters so they will fit all my big Mamiya and LF lenses). On the topic of losing tripods... last year I was out taking some photos of a big mountainside electric star.. it was super windy and cold, and as I was packing up, left my tripod sitting in the parking lot next to me car... it was a Robus 5570 + Acratech Panoramic head. I noticed some people flashing their lights at me, but I just thought they were being goofy. After driving an hour away to my hotel, I noticed my tripod was missing, so drove all the way back, and thankfully someone had taken my tripod and set it up neatly against a tree on the edge of the parking lot. Whew... So yeah, a airtag or similar would have been handy lol.
Prime example then! I did similar but also left the camera on it too!! Got home.... DOH! Luckily both were still at the beach when I went back. Those AirTags are brilliant if not used for the wrong reasons. Motorola have one on the way for android users.
Did you say that you shot the images of the high tide at ASA 6 with a six second exposure with that big stopper, what was the f-stop like 36 perhaps? Cheers 🙃
I bought an 18 stop ND for the April eclipse. Thanks to New York weather I didn't get much use out of it but I would like to! Idk if I would be willing to use it on anything other than Acros. Certainly not Foma!
Yes Acros is amazing for long exp. And definitely you will be there all day long with fomapan! 18 Stop! That's a challenge.
My art teacher loved his red filter for a moody b&w sky when I did photography at night school after school 30 years ago. I just got 6x6 enlarger and camera to play around with, I think it might be your fault. Lol

Good video, FM3a thats a pricy vintage, were you at Fisherman’s Cottage? I used to live up the steps Near Rylestone gardens, very good especially on film.

I have a film that doesn't need ND filter to do long exposure at daylight. It's ISO 0.6 and it's positive direct developing with Rodinal.
Kodak Rapid Copy Proccess film.

That "film" was originally used to make copies of x-rays before digitaI, hence the bluish base. I thought iso was closer to 0.06. The original developer was strong and fast at high temp. Also it's red light safe, i.e. not sens. We used to play around with sheets back in the day...
I've never tried that film, as you say no need for ND with that one!
Roger have you thought about strapping your tripod underneath the top tube of your bike.
My usual tripod won't fit at all on the bike James but this new one, I got velcro straps for the top tube. Fits well. I have a bag on the bike too which fits a small SLR so I can ride without a backpack if I am just shooting on the go without a plan.

Nice work. That filter is cheap. Some of the other ones are very expensive. That free well tri pod is very expensive. Good thing I got tripods and cameras and film for free when I helped promote a monthly camera show.
My last mini tripod was no where sturdy as this one but I lost it anyway! I left it at an event. I loathe losing gear but it happens. All I have left is the plate! Yes it isn't cheap
Do you lock the mirror up to prevent camera shake?
If I can, but to be honest the times when I haven't I've not seen any issue.
I love long exposures, but very few things aggravate me more than having to use an ND1000 filter (and yes, I know this is very use-case specific). I can't measure light, compose or focus with it on the lens so I always do all the measuring/composing/focusing work first, screw the filter onto the lens and then do the maths to add 10 stops to my exposure (or 11-12 when compensating for reciprocity failure). Even digital cameras aren't immune to this; the ND1000 is just too dense to be practical. Regardless of the weather, it always bumps my exposure times up to minutes rather than seconds, when I'm usually targeting under 10 seconds. I'm much more comfortable with a combination of a narrow aperture and an ND8 or, much more rarely, an ND64.
I forgot to mention that part Dominik. You can't see through to set up the shot. No so bad here. I had a handheld meter and I was set to infinite. Just had to level the composition prior to putting the filter on. But I know what you mean. It is a faff.
ND filters get much more picky for color. Color cast is so unwanted. With B&W it not an issue.
Reciprocity handling could easily be a subject of video or two. Often you get by with calculations like (time in seconds)^1.2 or time^1.3 or whatever suits the film. Sometimes there is no info on film datasheet (other than do your own tests) and sometimes the info on datasheets can be just wrong. Not so much an issue with short exposures but when you get into several minutes it really matters. (and some films like acros need no compensation unless you're into extremely long exposures).
I've used long exposures to get rid of people in the city and needed to use if for low light photography like in the night.
I couldn't find anything solid for this films reciprocity. I did a few tests prior and got good results by doubling the time. As long as they wasn't under exposed I'd be fine.
Isn't reciprocity failure happening because of the silver halide crystals already being struck by photons and not reacting to more? That's my understanding at least: the longer the film is exposed, the fewer silver halide crystals there are left for photons to strike. A digital sensor just accumulates charge (voltage or whatnot; sorry, I am not that tech savvy to know exactly) so reciprocity failure is not a thing there.

Moonlight photography, not the expression but literally photography in moonlight, is still more time compressive. Moreover, the lighting as rendered is visually a new experience. Contrasty film is okay, because of RF most films are contrasty with long exposure. The movement of the moon scans the light over a scene giving weak, light shadows when using a very long exposure. Surreal. Definitely not WYSIWYG.
I've tried a few star trails on film, 6 hours was my longest with a Holga!
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Yeah, star trails are all alike. When the moon is out the stars aren't. For those nights ruled by the queen of the night, scenes such as landscapes and urban scapes, when given long exposures, can look like noon on a planet with two suns. Pinhole them 'cus your camera has to stay out all night (or most of it). Some folks are making pinhole cameras from soda cans and leaving them to expose for weeks to months.
