Fun fact: the woman who serves them tea near the beginning is an actress called Susan Twist (who appears in the end credits), and also appeared as Isaac Newton's housekeeper in Wild Blue Yonder and in Church on Ruby Road as the woman who heckles Ruby's band. There quite literally is a twist at the end that might have multiple meanings in the future! 👀

It took this long to get the nearly 100yo William Russell to cameo. And this long to get far more former companions. If all of this amping up of classic who doesn’t lead to a reunion with his presumed only living relative (oh my g- what does the timeless children canon now do to Susan!?) I feel it will be a massive let down for as good as this season has been 1/4 of the way through so far.

The twist was the dance. Literally. An old dance called The Twist. ;)

The twist was that you could see the boy that the maestro had made (conjured? )Was standing in a door way. Hinting that they are probably not defeated completely.

I love the theory that the Doctor's salt thing did not only weaken the barrier between fiction and reality in the show, but also between the show and our reality, thus all the 4th wall breaks

Why did the boy (harbinger) remind me of a Graske? Like in The Sarah Jane Adventures? Maestro also stated “Pantheon” and I remember The Trickster was part of a Pantheon, who used Graskes a lot. So maybe the Trickster is due a return? I may be overthinking this massively but not a bad idea.

    • @ItsArcticVision
      @ItsArcticVision Před 3 měsíci +1

The trickster was part of “the pantheon of discord” which I think is different from the toymaker’s pantheon, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he did return because so far these villains have had a element that they control/feed off (toymaker was games, maestro was music, and trickster is chaos)
Wait… what if the trickster is the one who waits!?

    • @dandereninja4750

@@ItsArcticVisionyeah but if you remember in the giggle the doctor said that humans think things exist in binary “order and chaos” but then revealed there is a third “play”. My guess is that this is meant to be the pantheon of “play”. That being said the Devil’s chord is a weird episode because the Maestro is either Evil or suicidal given their plan to get rid of all music and thus end all life. They could be homicidal but even then they are clearly evil in that point rather than being playful or having fun.

I have a theory: Susan Twist is the same actress who is given credit at the end of the episodes for playing the Heckler in the Christmas episode, Mrs. Merridew is Wild Blue Yonder, the crew member in Spaces Babies, and the Tea lady in Devil's Chord. The Doctor did say, "There's always a twist at the end." 😲

Good villain and a good story that just didn’t mesh well when you think about it compared to the giggle. In the giggle it’s explained that the entity that is the toymaker isn’t good or evil. The toymaker is the personification of play. In this episode we have The Maestro, who is the personification of music, and wants to end all music. It reads as if the maestro is suicidal but from the episode it comes off as if the maestro is a murderous psychopath.

In the film 'Yellow Submarine', the Blue Meanies invade Pepperland where they destroy all music. The Beatles come to the rescue and defeat them by playing the music the Meanies hate and fear. Sound familiar Doctor Who viewers? Except Yellow Submarine wasn't shite.

Having watched every episode of Doctor Who Classic (including the animated episodes) and modern Doctor Who as well as all the spin offs, more than once, with the exception of the missing episodes, I must say… I don’t care for it much at all. What happened to the Doctor who’s a scientist? He’s always been complicated and eccentric and in modern times he/she has indeed moved with the times. This is all well and good up to the point where the original formula that makes Doctor Who special to so many fans seemingly has been changed entirely.
The original production was very low budget to say the least. Today it’s very much high budget with modern effects to match. Just as people change over their lives so do Time Lords. However, never ever has the Doctor believed in gods. Never has the entire cast of characters broken out into a song and dance in the style of a flash mob with no explanation whatsoever. Floating music notes 🎶 with no substance or explanation aside from a relationship to The Toymaker. A crosswalk that’s musical? The Doctor has always tried very much to provide a rationale for everything and this is missing entirely.
As for the companion of the Doctor she seems to accept the entire situation with such abnormal ease. When she asks his name the whole point is for him to say “I’m the Doctor” and she simply ought to say “Doctor Who” especially in an introductory episode for a new generation as is clearly the intention as a season 1. The actors are just lovely but lacking clever quips as is a standard for Doctor and companion. No scientific explanation or even a clarification of abandoned scientific reasoning.
I feel this whole new bit of series throws out bits of canon that they simply don’t care for at all while using it as a lure for long time and classic fan bait and switch. We have lost Doctor Who and instead now seem to have Doctor Mary Poppins. Perhaps things will settle down but I fear that the death of The Doctor will finally come. We will have nothing after this reckless abandon with Disney notes being taken in exchange for money. I’d rather have seen a true death of the Doctor than fear this may continue in such a manner.

Yeah, just a 'traditionalist' left behind by changing times. Time to move on grandpa, as a fan in my 40s I'm done with Doctor Who staying the way it is, and I enjoy all of classic who, but even it changed its format a billion times.

This actually brings up some good points. The role of the companion is to ask questions for the audience so the doctor can explain what is going on with all the fantastical elements of the show so we aren’t left with too many hanging questions. When they run into something the doctor hasn’t encountered before, the doctor tries to understand what it is.
