The stuff with the Toymaker and the Pantheon is being carried over from the 60th Anniversary Specials. The third of those was where Ncuti first appeared.

I apologize for potentially sounding one of those other guys..., but for a deeper understanding of this episode, I recommend watching this year's entire three-part Christmas special (The Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder, and The Giggle). Your channel has been a fortunate discovery for me, and I'm grateful for yet another exceptional reaction and consistently fantastic content!

I'm loving your perspective. Given how much this era was advertised as a good starting point for new viewers, It's cool to see how well it actually works. I was especially curious about this episode, given how much it references older stuff

You really just need to watch Wild Blue Yonder and The Giggle from the David Tennant 60th Anniversary Specials last year to catch up on the back story for this one (and then re-watch this, it'll make more sense). They are both fun episodes and worth a watch anyway, Neil Patrick Harris is excellent as the diabolical Toymaker (Maestro's father). The reference to parking in the junkyard with his granddaughter is a callback to the very first Doctor Who episode way back in actual 1963.

Every time the Doctor transforms into the next actor, there's personality shakeup. So far Ncuti's is more in touch with his emotion - but that seems to be a double edged sword when it comes to fear

There is alot of history in this show Susan was the Doctor's granddaughter and his one of his original companions when the show first started in 1963.
The Toymaker first appeared in 1966 in a serial called "The Celestial Toymaker" which was a 4-parter during the First Doctor (William Hartnell) tenure the Toymaker only appeared once in Classic Who and had appeared recently late last year in one of the 60th specials "The Giggle".

A few links with 20th-century 'Doctor Who' worth noting here... The composer at the start is played by Jeremy Limb, the son of Roger Limb, who was a member of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and composed music for the show in the early 1980s. Also, the old lady who played the piano was June Hudson, who designed costumes for late 70s / early 80s stories. And the billboard on the roof is advertising Chris Waites & The Carrollers, a fictional music group mentioned in the very first episode in 1963...

I adore this episode! It is still more over the top than most of Doctor Who, but this season is special because The Doctor invoked Superstition at the end of the universe (just go with it) a couple of episodes prior to where I had you start. So this season is more fantastical than prior series and is sooo much fun!
Apparently, the Doctor is up against a "Pantheon" of deities rather than the usual aliens and other antagonists. You missed meeting the Celestial Toymaker in charge of Games (I'm sorry for not having you start with Specials 1 - 3) and this episode you met the Maestro (child of the Toymaker and devourer of Music) and the Harbinger.
I'll leave others to share more (HOPEFULLY WITHOUT SPOILING YOU)
    Hugs from Colorado!

I'm calling it Ruby Sunday is either Susan but something happened in her regeneration and she forgot everything. Or she's Susan's daughter or descendant, and if not that her storyline might make her a his daughter or his daughter's descendant from Tenant's episode when the ship just made new generations of ppl by processing their dna

@ajandrianjafymusic I would prefer that than being one of the toy makers children, but given how the season is going it really feels like it's going to be that outcome which makes it kinda sad since the she and the doctor are going to be really close bestfriends towards the end before the reveal.

Since there's no upcoming New Who... I kind look forward your reaction starting 2005
At this point, since the showrunner really wanted to make this like a fresh start for newcomers, I guess you should continue on watching it~
But I feel like at the same time, you can watch thh 2005 one, heck even the 1963 one if you want more adventures!
60 years of adventures, and it's still ongoing, and you would not regret it~ :)

I have very much enjoyed your reactions to Dr. Who. One of my earlier posts said that you started in a good spot to pick up the story, but now I am thinking that maybe you should go back and pick up the three specials that have David Tennant as the 14th doctor and are where Ncuti first appeared. This season seems to be building in some way on both the Christmas special and the episode called "The Giggle" where the Toymaker comes back to cause havoc. The Toymaker's appearance (and potentially all the rest of these villains) may have been made possible by something the 14th doctor did during "Wild Blue Yonder." Of course, there are back stories to those specials that you won't understand, but I am starting to think that at least "The Giggle" may be essential to understanding the current doctor. He is not acting "normal" for a doctor - the fear thing is very, very new and not usually a part of his personality. Also in "The Giggle" the Toymaker said something about The One Who Waits. So you probably want to at least check out The Giggle as it is starting to look more and more important to this season's storyline. All three might be fun.

I enjoyed the episode but thought ending wasn’t quite correct, once the doctor has worked out how to defeat maestro he should have taken ruby , Paul & John back to 1925 just after the piano teacher died and defeated maestro there , then Paul & John from no music 1963 disappear , then they go back to proper 1963 & then musical number

    • @king_frost4463
      @king_frost4463 Před měsícem +5

Well, maestro isn't an ordinary villain they're a god, so they span time and live in all moments from once they enter the universe so they have to be defeated at anytime (just like their parent the toymaker) to undo their damage to the universe. Hope this clears it up. This is how I kinda understand it.
