    Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2dAercv
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2dUWP8h--
    AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post - amzn.to/2e2AVVt
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2dFuPZg
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2dApDpp
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2fzEYE1

This hit a lot of true notes for me. Sometimes though... My writers block comes from knowing that there is a missing piece and I don't know to fix it.

being a musician/composer, What helps for me the most is dissecting and recreating songs that you really like. It will teach you the skills and techniques that create that music which is what will bridge the gap between your ideas and reality. This is very work intensive however so if you are feeling depressed and unmotivated it will be very hard. focus on getting happy first and then these things will happen.

I ain't GOT a problem with writer's block. The real difficulty is in organizing all the stuff I create into what can be recognized as a plot and dialogue.

I think writer's block is a real thing. I think there's a difference between being lazy and writer's block. Personally for me, being lazy is because of fear. I don't want to write because I don't want to waste my time and end up doing nothing with my career. That's what fear creates, procrastination. But writer's block is super real. You can't just wake up and spew out ideas left and right. Idk what you guys would call being stuck if you don't call it writer's block. It's not like we can't think of new ideas because we are scared or because we are lazy. The ideas just don't come. You can't force your brain to be creative, that's not how things work.

Ricky, then that's great! To be able to just "get ideas" is amazing. And for one to be a writer, of any kind, you need to get those ideas. But not all of us get those kind of ideas instantly, sometimes it takes a bit longer. And that is called writers block, imo

When you're starting to write, before you have any contacts or anything else, when you're writing your first script (be it for movies, books, plays or whatever), I think there is also the fear of wasting time. If it's your first script you practically know it's not going to be sold, so you might end up wasting time on something that doesn't end up leading anywhere. I think for me that is the one thing, the one fear, that keeps me from coming up with anything - and of course this is the thing that causes me to waste the most time. I'm afraid to sit down and write because often when I do I end up writing for hours before looking at it and realising it'll never be read. That doesn't mean the time was wasted though, I often use the ideas I come up with in these cases. I often get the most ideas once I start creating, but before I have an idea, I never want to start writing.

Writers block in general as described in this movie might be difficult to overcome, but more specified writers block, the one you can find when you find the courage to self-analyse your writers block might actually not be that hard; I assume one has outlined their novel and knows what and when their characters are going to do. The way I see it now is that one should figure out how exactly these characters are going to do it, which all comes down to knowing your characters in the most intimate way necessary for you.

I struggle to focus at home, for example. Does being in a distracting environment, like being at home, does that stop you from focusing on writing? Is that normal?

Karl Iglesias is a great writer, truly. But I strongly disagree with his thoughts about writer's block and that it really is "just" fear for your work. I think that every writer gets blocked every now and then with ALL of his/ hers work. That might sometimes be because of fear, but definetly not all the times. I, for example, tend to get blocked when I try to combine two characters story so they eventually can meet eachother. And that's not because of me being afraid, that's because it's a huge pain in the a** to accomplish something like that in a smooth way, haha.

block is proven to be fear. Because if you truly had no fear your subconcious will guide you, but once it recognizes fear about something it won't give you anything

  • @LeonAllanDavis

I totally disagree. There is no joy quite like the joy of creating. It's addicting. It's a compulsion. You simply must do it.
So-called "writer's block" has been misnamed. It should be called "distractions".
For example, the choice between writing and having lunch with friends; afternoon sex; shopping; visiting mom; going to the beach; you get the idea. And when you return to your laptop, the battery is dead. You need a mental jumpstart. If you're gonna write, write! No distractions! Don't stop unless the house is on fire...

@@destinixshakur No doubt. Maybe it should be called, "writer's anxiety". Being pulled in six different directions.
I never experience block since I'm writing to an outline. I already know what's going to happen next and I know how the story ends.

    • @LeonAllanDavis
      @LeonAllanDavis Před 2 lety +1

@@destinixshakur I'd be happy to. You can't create anything out of thin air. You need material to work with. Ideas. Inspiration. Motivation. Where do you find that? From other people's work.
If i was writing music, I'd be listening to a lot.of music. It would be music outside my genre. For example, classical music. I'd listen to maybe Mozart and Wagner. Try the andante to Mozart's 21st piano concerto. Anything from Wagner's Ring Cycle. The recording without words. Not the singing, just the music. If you.lidten long enough, you'll stumble across a few notes or a couple bars that catch your ear. Doodle them out on your keyboard. You're looking for hundreds of these things. These are the building blocks...the building materials, you use to create your own stuff. If you really want to have some fun, check out the Moranbong Band. They take a few simple notes and arrange it into something very special. If you don't listen to music outside your genre, you're screwing yourself over. That's the plan. Listen. Doodle. Record. Listen. Doodle. Record. Keep doing that for two or three years. Or longer. It will come to you.

i think writers block was created by lazy uncreative people. When i sit the fuck down and discipline myself to write i take an hour or two and analyze what i have and brainstorm what could happen...then its all lit from there hehehe
