EVM 12L / G12H shoot out with Marshall JMP

  • Marshall and the greenback is a classic combination but in this video we wanted to see how a vintage Marshall would cope with an OEM EVM12L speaker.
The idea was that the 12L is a high powered clean sounding speaker where as the greenback (in this case a H heritage 55Hz) is a reproduction of a 50 year old low powered speaker with early breakup.
In this video we used a closed back Fatbaby 1x12.
As always we love to hear what you think, or if there is any thing that you are keen to see.

Black label isn't exactly "a" speaker, but rather mesa's name of "their" speaker : you have the Electro Voice's black shadow, the Celestion C90, you have also the lower(50 watts) wattage Celestion, that you can find in the Studio 22+, named VS-12, and you have the 10 inches Black shadow that you can find on the Subway blues, and if I'm not mistaken you even got bass Black Shadow speakers. Which one do you have ?

Daaaaaaaaymn! Love the EV! I’ve only ever seen/used EV in PA rigs... 🤯 sounds sick! I honestly don’t think enough guitarists understand how important the loud speaker and cab is in shaping tone... This channel is so good! I have 2 2x12 Fatboys that sound different in tone and then plugging different amps in the combinations becomes endless 🤪... Wicked videos guys!!! ❤️

Thanks Daniel. I think people are slowly realising the last thing between the chain and your ear is the speaker (well I guess it is actually the grill cloth but lets forget that for now) and how important a factor it is. You can easily make a rig sound bad or much better just by picking an unsuitable or suitable speaker, and cab for it to go in. Thanks again for the input and kind words.... and yeah the EVM12L rules.

The EVs sound great by themselves, but in a mix most of the players I like use a Celestion speaker of a specific type. Personally I prefer the higher 85 watt Celestion s. I finder them more dynamic and articulate. The EVs sold really clear and articulate so I would really have to play them on my amps which are all load with Celestion. I have only played the Jenson , Eminence and to he ev black widow in Mesa boogie mark IV cab which I am not crazy about. Those ev sounded great but against 25 watt Celestion I don't know if the comparison really works. I get more clarity from higher wattage Celestion speakers in the combos I play. I am not a big Marshall guy although I love the super lead and super bass, but I prefer Park, Surh and Fender High Power Twins, and the Fender Bass Breaker although I have had maintenance issues with them I love the 3 gain stage and think they are easy to get a great tone out of. Marshall really need to be cranked ans have the high frequency controlled or it can get painful. If dialed in correctly with a few mods I love vintage marshall but JCMs are too much for me. They are hard to get a pleasant tone by just plugging into and playing unless you happen to really dial it in and make sure the highs are round and not strident. They are great in a mix but I never thought a barebones marshall got an easy to dial in tone.

It'd be really cool to hear that EV Black Shadow compared to the 12L Classic, especially with one of your Mesa amps since Boogie branded speakers are voiced slightly differently from the standard models. MC90 vs CL80 would also be cool, for that matter. I recently uploaded an EV shootout on my channel if anyone is interested. Keep the great content coming! Cheers :)

I’ve never liked EV’s. I like Celestions and have a 4x12” cab with very early Vintage 30’s plus 4 original G12M’s not currently in use but in the near future I plan to. I bought 3 EVM12L’s in the 80’s to experiment with to see why people like them and to see if I could. Even though both speakers in this demo sounded great and the EV especially had a certain clarity that was unique and breathtaking, I’ve never been able to get that quality out of mine in the real world with the amps I have to my ear. They’re always way to efficient and harsh sounding (for me even for bass) with of course none of the type mids Celestions have. However, I have found them to be good with a distorted neck humbucker because it cleans up the dirtiness well.
What I have found as an alternative to EVM12L’s is the JBL G125 which is the best of both worlds in handling capacity and crunch tone, I have a number of them. They’re 200 watts high power speaker that has a Celestion style overdrive characteristic with a nice rich full tone and midrange that’s especially good with Fender style amps-plus with my Mark lll Simul-Class Boogie-it’s the best sound combination the Boogie can have to my ears. I know so many studio players and other people like them they’re just not for me but I do admit they have some good moments.

    • @ZillaCabs
      @ZillaCabs  Před 4 lety +1

Thanks Scott, hands up, the reason we did it this way is we had a looper pedal with a single track.. we do have a reamp box which we used to use a lot for this kind of stuff. The trouble is in these videos there are two ways of doing them..... quick changes between the speakers playing the same riff.. this allows you to A/B the two speakers a hear the different qualities of either, but I feel this can sometimes be a bit sterile and a bit of the vibe is lost. The other way is to jam a little on a speaker, this does make it harder to do direct comparisons but I feel it gives a little of something else. Does that make sense? Thanks for tuning in by the way.

Superb comparison. The chopping between them really shows the difference. G12H sounds like mud. I love bass, and warm tones, but I don't like it when the bass is a pile of slop. Just listen to when that g12h cuts in, when they're switching back and forth. Suddenly the bass forms a sloppy noise-floor, that other sounds have to climb over the top of. If it was me, i'd EQ the treble down a little, and the bass up on the EV, and I'm sure it'd deliver a warmer tone, but without that awful blurred bottom end.

Wow, you just stated nothing more than your opinion. Thank you for imparting everyone with that. But unfortunately you failed to account for your style, genre, amp source etc etc ....... all of which kinda really matter. The Ev's ARE flatter sounding....... and thats not flat like "dull" sounding, it's the absence of a frequency spike or accentuation at a particular hertz. The thing most people miss when they try to talk about tone is that it is a "stew' of mixed ingredients....... amp, guitar, speakers, pedals, cables, etc etc, and what version of the stew you like is only your personal preference ....... That being said EV 12 M's ARE flatter frequency wise, and that is not opinion, its a fact you can see on a graph. Whether or not that is a good result for your amplifier or your style is another thing altogether. In some of my amps there is NOTHING like an EV speaker, yet other amps i own definitely prefer a celestion style speaker...... my personal fave is the Mojotone BV30-V........ In my Rivera stage IV amp on the other hand, the eminence version of the EV12, is absolutely shunning........ perfect balance IMHO ......

G12 65 and G12 80 (classic lead 80s) are soooo underrated. As far as the EV goes, i always mic place the mic at the center of the dust cap at a 45 degree angle. Best results ive gotten thus far!!

Just goes to show how significant the speaker is in shaping the tone we consider "correct". And when you hear something honest like an EVM, people realize how guitars ACTUALLY sound, and blame it on the speaker lmao.

Borrowing from Hifi One thing no one ever thinks about is the effect of speaker On the amp only the notion the speaker itself is creating all the coloration. With a crazy high output impedance of a guitar amp the reactive load of the speaker is modulating the frequency response of the amp too so it’s a two way street.

Guys, WAAAAY too much talking! I want to determine on my own which is the best speaker simply by hearing them! Do a separate video with your personal opinions. When I'm shopping for speakers and need to listen to 50 different sound bytes I want to get to the sound bytes without having to scroll through the video. Just constructive criticism from a retail buyer!
