Also, I'm curious how you teach your kids about modesty and purity.
I would love to hear how you manage multiple kids all being in extra-curricular activities, home school and housework
I think so many issues come from unrealistic expectations and starting “traditional learning” at too young an age for too long a time. Littles learn so much through play and us reading to them.
Great video! Would love to see a video about how you balance housework with homeschooling! Also what chores your kids do and when. Thanks!
I’ll be sharing this when I upload my new schedule videos toward end of summer! But I did share a daily cleaning routine not long ago!
I love these videos. Today I really liked the part about what you should not expect your 6 yr old to do. That is the kind of information I think is lacking or at least I haven’t found it. As you said we only get a glimpse of your lives. My 6 about to be 7 yr old boy and my five year old girl old are totally different about schooling. He takes something that is a 5 minutes paper and can turn into an hour or more, more days than not. So I like to hear what is possibly “normal” or not for boys or girls or age. What might expect from them at ages. I love everything you put out, but today I felt like you gave me a little more of the stuff I needed👍🏻
So thankful it was helpful!
Same! My son is 7 and does the same thing. Something so simple he turns into an hour long process haha, he’s so fidgety and is always moving or jumping around as I teach. At first I was frustrated but now I let him move around as I teach and it somehow works.
My 6 almost 7 year old boy does a lot of his work standing at our table next to me. He is able to focus better standing than trying to sit still in the chair. There are times that school takes 2+ hours (not to mention our state requires 4 hrs a day, 180 days as a school year) and he does SO much better when he's allowed to move and stand.
Same! I have a 5.5 year old boy who takes forever to do everything!
One of my favorite how do I videos so far.
Know your child, set expectations and consequences if not met, and FOLLOW THROUGH.
Consistency is absolutely key and I feel can be the most difficult and therefore overlooked component!
I struggle still, but I look to the Lord for strength and grace as I keep trying!!!
Ashlee i’d love to know how you guys have fun and are creative. The educational side comes easy to me because i follow the kids interests, books and we use TGTB curriculums. But play and creativity are NOT natural to me.
Honestly this is so good- I just had this on and I could tell my kids were listening every once in a while. I like when they hear when other families operate similarly to us. Having generally really awesome kids, I sometimes just assume that they know my expectations, so it’s such a good reminder to set them up for success but laying things out ahead of time
I've replayed this about ten times and taken so many notes. I've always had a rough time building character with my boys and helping them to become disciplined.
When I married almost three years ago, my husband and I began creating rules for our family family of six. Two of our four boys are gifted with ADHD, and I am also High IQ with ADHD, so things were not going very well in our home.
By God's grace and my loving husband's patience, we are finally making progress and this video is like a cherry on top!
Amazing! Thank you so much for sharing what works for your family.
Also for a "normal" 7 yr old boy, we put a mini-trampoline next to our homeschool table! We did spelling while jumping etc. :-)
we have VERY similar styles of approach and handling these things ... I also have sticker reward program where my 7 year old earns 5 stickers (one a day) for a ‘free day’ adventure (unschooling) , or treat or small reward. He gets 3 warnings (strikes) and looses the sticker. I make it hard so that when he looses a sticker he restarts at sticker 1. It works well. He knows he needs to focus , best effort and have positive learning attitude. We start with ‘God’s Truth’ (prayer/biblical time) as a foundation to help remind him before we start.
I enjoyed this video. As a homeschool mom and piano teacher, I really appreciate parents that set healthy boundaries for their children. My oldest adult child that was homeschooled needed an abundance of physical activity to be able to concentrate on schoolwork. Even now he runs 10-15 miles early each morning before going to work. Thank you for your tips and encouragement.
This is the best comments thread, uplifting and solid mom conversation. ❤️
I need new ideas on how to keep my inner peace/patience when no one is on board but me! I have lost energy for silly mom dance breaks.
Thanks Ashlee
What have you found is a good amount of time for a break during your school day. Like how long is snack time, how long is free play time and how long is lunch? I have boys and they can be outside for a hour and they never feel like their breaks are long enough.
So we just break long enough to eat and move around a bit. I don’t let them run off because mine are the type that have a hard time coming back. They want free time to not end
Make snack time 15 min or less because otherwise they may begin to eat slooooow in order to not do their work.
Thank you for being so open about what goes on behind the scenes because I'm dealing with this right now with my soon-to-be 6 year old son and I've been SO stressed inside that I'm raising a future prison inmate.
Perfect! I am actually starting a channel about homeschooling special needs. Just bought my camera and am getting ideas!
Good luck!!!
Specialized momma bear I would love to follow you, or get any tips you may have! I have a 10 year special needs son and two typical daughters (age 7 and 2) I have definitely struggled finding the balance homeschooling the older two (especially since my son learns differently, and he also receives therapy inside and outside our home) the balance this past year has been a struggle. Thanks for any tips or feed back you can offer 😊
I will be looking out for those videos! I have 2 special needs children and we just started homeschooling this year.
Would love to follow you. Have an ADHD boy
Great video AGAIN. I also want to mention that if you have started to homeschool slightly older children who have been in public school, give them and yourself grace. Many of them have been bullied or picked on by peers and staff or in our case just ignored because they are very quiet. Some kids will have an aversion to or trauma relating to certain subjects and act out. Exactly as you said consistency and GRACE
Thanks for this! I’m struggling with my first year homeschooled kids bc public school is all they know. But somewhere we have to get to the new normal! And new expectations...but it’s definitely been tricky and hard. Prayer and grace. I need the word Grace in our homeschool space for next year. For me. 😉
Unfortunately there's a lot they have to unlearn and "debunk" from public school. Prayer and conversation....we learnt about things they were experiencing that they never told us.....safe space and grace. I even took my oldest back a grade because he was convinced he couldn't do maths.
This was so good and helpful! One of the best things to happen to me since starting to homeschool after pulling my kids from public school is getting the opportunity to really learn who they are and their personalities! You’re so right that we can’t discipline them all the same and I’m so thankful that I know so much more about who my kids are now and have been able to teach and discipline them each accordingly. Thanks for sharing!☺️❤️
It’s such a blessing!❤️
Love this balanced, practical approach❤️ And YES to our kids don’t run our homes! Like love you, and that’s why I won’t allow you to be out of control!!
Yes all out of love!
I love this playlist. It is so helpful!
Girl, I’m taking notes! Loving this advice!
Thank you so much for sharing! So many good points. Handling bad attitudes can be so mentally draining.
I needed to hear this! Thank you for your wisdom.
I feel completely overwhelmed as a homeschool mom in the middle of the Indian ocean away from family and friends. It is our 2nd year but nothing seems to work this year. I am constantly doubting myself. We are doing Grade 0 and Grade 2 ( RSA ).
Seyschelles has been in lockdown for most of the year so a lot of the expat families have returned home. I know one or two moms who are doing online school with their kids via the private schools but no other homeschooling families. Homeschooling is a complete different lifestyle and people do not seem to understand that so I rely alot on youtube moms for guidance.
Your channel has been a life line! This series has been very insightful.
God bless.
Ps. Please forgive any grammer or spelling errors as English is my second language.
I am sorry that’s hard.
I really needed this Video! I needed to hear all the thing you talked about! ❤️
Good job, Mama! Keep up the great work!
Love this playlist! Much needed information in homeschool/parenting topics! Please keep 'em coming😊
This was a great video! Very practical advice. Thank you Ashlee!!
Such wise advice. I really appreciate you sharing your perspective and experience.
I LOVE this video! Yes, we as parents are to be in charge of our homes. I have a 1st grader and the last several months have been very difficult in homeschool and just life. I’m glad to know that all of it will help her in the future. ❤️
Totally needed this, thank you!
Perfect timing! I really appreciate this video. It’s nice to know that I’m not alone. We’re all raising actual human beings that are imperfect like me. Thank you for the encouragement ❤️
Great advice from a seasoned mom! These were some of my questions, thank you! Very helpful! I love the dialogue examples. You are doing such a GREAT job!
Love this video... it is so individualized but seeing that consistency and handling things on a case by case basis is normal is so very helpful!! Thanks for leading the way in homeschooling it is so nice to see success in other families for us just getting started!!
Great video! This was my first year homeschooling and I really appreciate your videos. I learn so much from them. I really admire you, and look up to you. Thank you for sharing your heart and how to homeschool with us.
Love the look! (hair & shirt). Love the playlist too. 💖
Love. You. So. Much. Preach girl!!!!💕
THANK YOU for posting this. I have been in what seems like a battle with my boys. I've been taking things away so much lately that it seems like that's all I'm doing. So its nice to know & see its building character and their behavior will eventually get better once they understand if there is a consequence for their behavior.
Yes please more parenting videos! This was so helpful.
Love these videos! Thanks so much
By far my favorite video in this series!!! Definitely sharing this!!!
Thankyou so much!
Thank you for the video! ❤️ We have younger kids and at times it’s hard to get and keep them motivated.
Sounds like you’re doing an amazing job. Your children are blessed.
By Gods grace!
This is exactly what I needed to hear. It's hard not to lose your mind with a very active 5 year old boy in the mix, but remembering I'm the boss is key.
Rewatched this twice and will probably watch a third time. Thank you for this!
I needed to hear this. You are an amazing support system. I thank God for you.
Thankyou so much!
This was so much of what I needed to hear. The encouragement that why I’m repeatedly saying may not be falling on deaf ears ha ha. Thank you!
❤️ ❤️ love this thanks for sharing!
Excellent video! Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and encouragement, this is exactly what I needed to hear. God bless. ❤️
Thank you for sharing! This video was very helpful.
👏👏👏
Conversations. Discipline. Expectations. I appreciate your parenting philosophy and talks like these because it truly does 💯 resonate and align with me. Thank you Ashlee for always being bold and brave enough to have these hard talks. And I truly do love that there was never a 1,2, 3. And that it all starts with us as the parents. The ones that God gave the authority to guide and to love in His love. Keep doing what you're doing mama! You rock!
First year homeschool parent and I can relate on every level. I have a parenting style exactly like yours. I believe in preparing my son for the real world, and we have straight-forward, graceful, come-to-Jesus talks ALL the time…lol. This has been such an adaption, but I love it sooo much more than him being in brick and mortar school. Thank you for this video and God bless you😊
Thank you so much for this video!
Great tips today Ashlee and I love that you mentioned their physical activity as well and how that can help in school, I've never thought of that before. One questions..do you think that having your kids in their desks facing the wall helps to eliminate distraction and even being the distraction and will helps with focus?
Hmmmm so I never considered that! They are placed there because it makes sense in the room. But now that you say it... maybe?
Great insight!
This was a great video. Very well said
I needed this one, and all the other videos too 😂
Thanks so much. Very helpful ❣️
Yes I decided years ago to always look at my children’s behavior, and decide is it childlike behavior or disobedience, and correct the behavior accordingly.
I love the expectations talk. I expect you to act respectful and have a good attitude. Not everything we do in life is going to be fun, but being grumpy or angry does not make it more enjoyable--it makes it worse. We all have bad days and giving our kids grace is important, but they also need to learn in our homes how to function when they have bad days as adults. 💕💕 Way to go!
Exactly!
Very helpful. Thank you.
I would love to know how you get ideas for field trips.
I would love to hear you talk about what you do to look so young and pretty ! You are gorge anyway would love to hear more about the math your kids in high school and more of the high school courses
Thank you!
I would love to hear some types of consequences that you had used for younger kids. I am always confused about what to use for my son - as he is only 7. I don’t want to be harsh or too lenient so some of this difficult behaviour continues.
We try to always bring their behavior and attitudes back to God just like you. “Not honoring me and not honoring the Lord…” when you said that, i felt at home! Those exact words are said often here! God said to honor your father and mother so whenever our kids act up, they aren’t just disobeying us, but God. If you leave out God, then you’re training them to be humanists, which in the end has no transforming power .
Anyway….AMEN!!
Love your videos.
In your 6th grade routine video, could you share what those scripture memory cards were? They gave the definition of faithfulness. Thank you so much.
I ASKED FOR THIS 🙌🏻
I hope it helped! Thankyou for your request!
This is EXACTLY what I needed. Just had a long talk with my husband. We’re immediately making changes. I have a almost 7 year old I just redid K with (tgtb) after a failed public k year last year. He’s thriving ! The attitude and complaining is really getting to me. I hold onto those seemingly perfect home school days when it gets hard though. I am adding my daughter into the mix in the fall and I need to get a handle on my expectations because recently the dynamics have changed and their behavior has not been great at the table. Thank you so much for this video. You’re definitely helping a lot of moms out there !
Thank you mama
Needed this today.
Enjoy your videos so much. This last year was my first year homeschooling my 12 year old grandson. Yes I’m old! Lol. I pieced it together but I want to get more precise with my curriculum. We did an online curriculum for Math, LA and reading. The Math and LA worked pretty good especially the Math. I need that extra help in Math since I hate it! Lol. How do you handle their writing or journaling? I feel like I failed at that. I’m planning on doing science and history with the G and the B. Thanks for all your advise.
We need more mothers like you. Just gonna say that. 👏
Would love to see a how you handle kids choosing library books as far as making sure content is ok. There has been a lot of talk in the homeschool world about making sure we know the content of what our kids are reading. And I completely agree. Very important to us to make sure our kids are reading things we are ok with. But how do you make sure book is ok? I feel like it’s impossible to pre-read all books. I do check TGATB book lists, but of course not every book has been reviewed to see TGATB thoughts on the book. When going to library, kids are randomly picking books that look good to them to read. How do you know on those library trips if these books are ok to bring home and let them read?
Same here! People are often amazed at how disciplined my kids are with their school work. I tell them that they are disciplined because I expect them to be. I leave no doubt about what my expectations are.
I think if people halfway expect their children to do a lousy job, that is what they will do.
I agree. We rise to what is expected!
I feel like I didn’t establish a good system or respect as much in my kids especially my son as I should have. My daughter has autism so that’s been a lot of navigating but my son is 11 now and I find it hard to get him to do things when we ask. I haven’t stayed consistent. I have had health and mood issues as well. I feel like it’s almost too late but I am going to start having more consequences and working through this.
❤️❤️
How do you know they passed the grade? Do you do grades? Do you need to do testing?
👏👏👏👏
I need examples of consequences you apply! I know each situation and child will be different but I need ideas and examples - if you can :)
How long would you suggest that five year old can sit at a table and do schoolwork?? We sit and do schoolwork from 1030 to twelve... do u think that is too long??
I used to teach Kindergarten. The longest we had kids “sitting” to do work was about 30 min increments. Depends on the kid though. Some kids need different seating options as well. Some do better standing, some like the floor, some on an exercise ball. Just depends
Personally, I do. I would do 10 minutes of sit-down work, 10 minutes of play, back and forth until school work is done. Each year you add time with the sit-down work until they can work for a few hours at a time in middle school.
How do you homeschool older kids with a busy toddler running around getting into everything and interrupting every few minutes?
I broke our school day into chunks then and tried to do a lot when toddler was sleeping. Also, expecting older kid’s to be able to work more independently seems acceptable if you’re handling a younger sibling
@@GraceandGrit thank you! He doesn’t nap anymore but is so fussy sometimes it’s hard to get things done.
Breaking it up into chunks would probably work for us! I never thought about that. Would you just do one or two subjects at a time and then take a break?
What about when YOUR the one not having a great day(ya know certain times of the month) How do you do school when your on edge🥴
I plan an easier week during that time. I give myself a lot of grace. Sometimes popping in an instructional DVD or finding one on CZcams can do the trick if the mom is having a rough day.
