  • Here's the E Minor reel “The Ashplant.” I play it here with dancer Kieran Jordan. Learn more about Kieran here: kieranjordan.com
As always, I’m playing this on my Patrick Olwell Pratten-style flute.

What a great collaboration between flute and dancer matching swing and rhythm ,. Loved it . Great tune . One I’ve picked up at the Saturday session. Thanks for another wonderful tune of the month

thanks, Maria! Always great to play with Kieran, even if we're not in the same room. (Also, her husband did the paintings on our wall... so there is a lot of familiarity going on!)

This is one of those tunes that I liked it OK, but then after hearing it played well, it is like now that's the stuff! Loved the dancing too!

I don't have an Irish flute yet, cause they're kinda expensive but one day I will buy one xD (I would love it if you could suggest some flutes for beginners that don't cost a lot). Although I don't have a flute, I absolutely love watching your videos.
Thank you so much for uploading!
This was a beautiful collaboration. Loved it.
    Greetings from India! :)

I didn't want to spend a lot of money on my first flute either so I got a nice carbon fiber one from Erik the flute maker in Florida, USA. It's around $200 USD rather than some of the professional wooden ones that cost $2000 USD :D eriktheflutemaker.com/collections/carbon-fiber-major-scale-side-blown-flutes/products/low-d-irish-flute-in-carbon-fiber

Do you dance a bit of sean-nós too, Shannon?
    It’s a lot of craic

Going to learn it at last now.
Would you say, Shannon that your version is closer to the Altan or the Noel Hill and Tony Mac Mathúna version?

    • @ShannonHeatonMusic
      @ShannonHeatonMusic  Před 3 lety +1

Good! Not sure where I first learned it, but I always think of the recording that Larry Nugent made of it, with the great Kevin Henry.

whats her style of dance? I would like to know the name to differentiate it from tap dancing. every time i look for irish dance, i find step dancing as in the riverdance show, which is fine, but not what im looking for

It's great sean-nós (old style) dancing. There is discussion of the connection between the music and different dance styles in this podcast episode I did: shannonheatonmusic.com/episode-08-miss-mcleods-reel-at-113/

    Well played.
I can usually blurt my way at through this tune at a session. Nothing melodic though.
