- Happy new year, gang! To start my year of session classics, here's “Joe Cooley’s Reel.” I teach this E Minor reel phrase by phrase and then I put it in an ensemble context. As always, I’m playing this on my Patrick Olwell Pratten-style flute.

Your expertise in teaching is amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Inspiring as always! Thanks!
Thanks Shannon. Another great play with lilt and strong rhythm.
Thank you for giving life to this tune ... I've suffered it for years in sessions played as a race or as a plodding Victorian hymn ... i always knew there was a great tune in there ... many thanks for liberating it.
ha! Well, *almost* every tune has great music in it. When I encounter one that doesn't sound so great, I like the challenge of trying to find it for myself. Nothing lacking in Cooley's--but it's tricky enough for newer players. It's too bad that this is such a common one to tackle early on.
I’m afraid ours is the racing session version and I never quite learned it even after three years joining.
I’m picking it up now and grateful for having you break down the notes because I take longer to learn tunes by ear.
This is a tricky one but I got the basic structure and I’ll be working on it All this week.
I’m determined to get this one down because people play it quite a bit.
Anyway, though I always found it kind of played crazy where I live ha ha.
You're lovely Shannon ! Thank you
The two of you in the kitchen were absolutely smokin'!!!
we probably had something on the stove we needed to stir...
Love your playing and enthusiasm. Been following Tune of the month for a while (and readily admit not learning all tune :) ). It really works well to have the tune played (really well) with more instruments afterwards!
so glad it is helpful to have the ensemble context. That's always good for me, too!
Thanks so much. Love your sound! Seamless from singing the tune into playing it. An art in itself! 👏 and so well played through with gtr accompaniment
kind of hilarious to go from singing to playing--doesn't always sound superb. But hopefully it's a good and clean way to teach the tune!
Hello Shanon! I have to share with the world my feeling of accomplishment for being finally at the appropriate skill level for this tune!
Although you humble us all little bit with that performance in the kitchen.
World class as usual. Lovely variations.
So exciting. Progress feels super good... and that's amazing that you can feel it and acknowledge it. Congrats, Pete!
Bonjour, It is very kind of you to spend such time for us who want to learn your music. I find it very motivating and stimulating. A shame I did not discover your tuition videos earlier. Better late than never. Thanks a lot to you. Merci beaucoup !
So happy you've found me, Francis. So glad that you enjoy this music, too. A nice thing we have in common.
Several days ago I realize I really wasn't that solid on Cooley's on the flute, my primary issue being the weak finish on the B part, struggling to eak out those last few ounces of breath. This video was just what I needed, when I needed it. Thanks!
So glad the timing worked out! Best of luck on timing YOUR breaths. I think it's the key.
really great ! thank you !
thanks, Eilam!
This is the best instructional site on Irish flute on the planet. Demonstration of the tune in a basic broken down setting and then a masterful performance with colourful variations for us all to aspire to. Any chance of a some tips on actually holding the instrument? I have seen and tried too many variations and can’t seem to settle.
so glad that this is helpful for you, John! I'll try to do a "holding the flute" vid soon. In the meantime, hold it in front of you like it's a clarinet---as naturally as you can, just cover those holes. That's how you want it to be when you bring it over to the side!
❤️ nice ! Thank you !. Love this tune. Learned it last year with my friend in lockdown mode. You play so lovely shannon ! Matt too!
Great that we are playing Cooley's together (if not in the same room), Lisa!
@@ShannonHeatonMusic yes for sure ! I often think of all the other musicians in the world playing the same tunes in their homes ! 😃 p.s can you make a tutorial on the yellow tinker ... or the Cup of tea sometime ? 💛 your a 💎 gem!
Iontch, Shannon!
Blian Úr 2019 Mhaith agat! ;)
Love that E-dorian tune.
Goes grant with Ships Are Sailing, in a set of 3 maybe good to place Miss Monaghan between the 2.
Beannachtaí Dé!
yes, great set!!
Dia is Muire dhuit a Shannoin!
Do you have a special video on the triplets in a reel?
I still must master those.
Dála an scéil I started to play the giotár aríst after almost 3 years of inactivity.
Tough but little by little the tunes are coming back to me.
Thanks to you, Matt and also the Tune Supply guy, Caitlín and Chris! ❤️
Go raibh 100 000 maith agaibh! ^^
I'm so happy that you are playing again. Glad you are tuning into these livestreams. And it was sweet to see you at the Mary O's session the other night!
Was hoping you would do a tutorial on this tune. Fab . Learnt it a few months ago but as usual in too much of a hurry to rush off to the session with it without learning all the nice things , rolls etc . Lovely kitchen session
oh, good! Yes, always good to remember to take our time with things. I need to be reminded all... the... TIME!!
Shannon Heaton . I am going to spend all day listening and playing along to your vid.
hope you take some time out for tea!
Class playing as usual .Shannon what's the reel in the background at the start.
thanks! The intro tune is the Mountain Road--but in G Major, not in the customary key of D.
Hi Shannon, did you explain once how you succeeded to have such a loud sound (embouchure technic /exercices), if yes could you provide with a link ? Thank you so much for all this
So sorry that I missed your note earlier. I haven't done any embouchure tutorials. It's felt hard to do this as a one-size-fits all, because everybody's mouth is so different... and we all understand things differently. But maybe I should reconsider. Short answer--you want an efficient, well-directed stream going more INTO the flute than spraying across it. And playing very slowly, or just a few nice long tones to find that sweet spot is mostly all the exercise you need, outside of just playing the flute!
Dia is Muire dhuit Shannona chara,
Already 10 years ago i saw this gem:
czcams.com/video/Zfu0jK_0JQI/video.html
It’s Emma O Sullivan doing the brush dance.
But the accordion player he is special.
Ain’t that Cooley’s the 1st ríl?
It feels so different to others versions.
Not sure about the 2nd reel though.
See you Saturday! 😉
X
ps: Tis been a while since Master Matt hasn’t made a guitar video 😛
Great playing last Sat 👍🏻
What tune is that playing in the background in the introduction?
hiya! That intro music is the Mountain Road in G, instead of the typical key of D. It's a performance from our Lovers' Well album (myself and Matt Heaton, with Kieran Jordan on the feet).
Hi all, can anyone tell me the name of the tune from first 30 seconds of the intro please?🥲
hello! That's the Mountain Road in the very beginning--but instead of playing it in the customary D Major, I played it in G.
