We have had it in PC for quite a while. It is very formidable in the hands of experienced captains. It regularly dominates when it is at the point of attack because of its tankiness. Truly enjoyed the breakdown and match. Thanks Spartan.

IJN Zaō is based off of the 1941 Type A Heavy Cruiser, which was an attempt by Japanese ship makers to construct a Heavy Cruiser fit for leading cruiser divisions in the Decisive Battle Strategy under the Sixth Naval Armaments Supplement Program. In the strategy, these cruisers would have formed the backbone of torpedo flotillas during expeditions, and the triple mount 20.3cm guns would have been the heaviest armament on a Heavy Cruiser for that time. In total, 8 ships were planned to be built in an Ibuki-style lay out. However, due to lack of funding or interest from the Imperial Government coupled with the threat of war with America, the project was scrapped along with the supplement program in 1941.
The Circle Six Type A class is the most obscure Japanese cruiser project due to the original documents being destroyed at the end of the war. Everything, other than the original requirements put forth by the Navy, were destroyed. Some of the requirements were as follows:
Resistance to 500kg bombs hits to the deck and turrets.
Carry an immunity zone towards 20cm rounds between 15-25km and towards 15cm shells from beyond 10 kilometers; including hits under the waterline.
35 knot top speed.
Armed with 12 203mm/55 guns mounted in four triple turrets.
With the original documentation destroyed, Wargaming based the Zao off of an article from a Japanese magazine. Because of this, the Zao makes numerous deviations from established Japanese cruiser design, such as torpedo launchers placed at the aft end and poor seaplane handling facilities. The name "Zao" was given to the ship by Wargaming in accordance with the Imperial Japanese tradition to name heavy cruisers after mountains, although it is rather interesting why they renamed the cruiser to "Zao" instead of the old "Senjo" when the latter is also a mountain of Japan. Perhaps Wargaming saw it fitting to end a line geared towards starting fires with a ship named after an active volcano.
Zaō is named after Mount Zaō (Za-oh), which is a complex cluster of stratovolcanoes on the border between Yamagata Prefecture and Miyagi Prefecture in Japan. The central volcano of the group includes several lava domes and a tuff cone, Goshiki-dake, which contains a crater lake named "Okama". Also known as the "Five Color Pond" (五色沼, goshiki numa) because it changes color depending on the weather, it lies in a crater formed by a volcanic eruption in the 1720s. The lake is 360 metres (1,200 ft) in diameter and 60 m (200 ft) deep and is considered one of the main tourist attractions in the area.
One striking feature of Zaō's famous ski resorts are the "frost-covered trees" (樹氷, juhyō) that appear in mid-winter. Strong wind over the nearby lake fling water droplets which freeze against the trees and their branches, until near-horizontal icicles begin to form. Falling snow settles on the ice formations, and the end result is a grotesque figure of a tree. The effect of a full forest of such trees gives visitors a ghostly impression. Zaō is one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains.

I like Mikauwa and that new IJN commander has some interesting torpedo centric perks that I'll try after I've leveled him up a bit.
used to play this ship on PC version back in the first year. This ship used to abuse the game mechanic of you were only spotted if ship was in your detection range. YOu could kite ships all day and burn them down and never be spotted. Eventually WG made it you were detected up to your gun range. After that ZAo was brought to earth. Still a great ship.

Arpeggio Haguro is another great commander for Zao if you don't have AL Atago and manage to snag Haguro during the last Arpeggio event. Almost like a discount AL Atago can get up to 23% fire chance

What I like about Spartan is he gameplay is very informative. He's not constantly going for those 300k world records and he focuses on winning. I've learned a lot from him and his videos got me to do better during my games.

Edit: looks like several others already mentioned this one but leaving comment anyway......Hey spartan, another commander option for those that do not have Al Atago is Arpeggio Haguro. You get close to the same HE chance with her as you do with Atago . At 16/2 on both, my Zao is 24.9 with Haguro and 27 with Atago. Haguro was available the last couple of times Arpeggio was added to the game. Granted it is a paid commander but at least she is still available on occasion unlike Atago.
As a battleship main this video made me cry.

Zao is sooo great and fun. Disgusting HE, strong AP, fast + decently agile

Zao its kool but need a good team to be effective
And maybe an alternative build, you can also use steering gears instead of concealment for better dodging

@@SpartanElite43yeah true, I’m testing both of them, and they’re both valid options. So I think it comes down to your preference / playstyle
That's why I use Mikawa because you get better concealment and he has a steering skill and with Lemmonier as an inspiration you can break contact much easier
I love my Zaõ, I don’t have Atago I use Yamamoto, this is not a carry ship as you said, when the team is terrible you can’t do much exept burn everything to the ground lol
Zao Torpedoes are better when they are kiting as towards the rear of the ship.

Not really. On ships like Mogami, Suzuya and Myoko, yes, because you get angles on the rear of the ship. On Zao you have to basically sail flat broadside to get your torps off. Not good angles at all.

Haguro is better than Atago by a long shot. Haguro gives IJN cruisers 1/4 pen. Depending on fires is not something I would consider doing. But that just me.

@SpartanElite43 when ARP comes back around I would highly suggest Harugo and Nachi. Nachi is great on Azuma and Yoshino, and Haguro is good on the rest of them.
I don't have Haguro but Atago's fire chance, at least for me, has been quite reliable, though I can appreciate Haguro's appeal.
@SpartanElite43 also forgot to mention that you can sacrifice 2% fire chance for Full Speed ahead, and if you run Muller as an inspiration, you can do well over 40 knots.
