I use colour films as well, a few being Kodak portra 160, 400, 800, Color plus, Ultramax and Gold, Fujifilm PRO160NS and PRO400H. Thanks for watching!

Man, I love your videos. I am very impressed with your experience, competence, choice of words and calmness. Great pleasure and treat. Thank you for sharing all this on You Tube!
As for the lens: I really like the 50mm focal length and I use my beloved Summicron v4 and it really meets all my needs and is (maybe) the best lens I've ever used. That said, I would love to check out this new Speed Panchro II from LLL and the Nokton f/1. I think that each of them brings something different to the game :) I would love to check out the bokeh from Speed Panchro II and how it performs in color :)

Thank you!!! Oh man.. I used to have a v4 50 Summicron too.. But somehow decided to let it go during the "regular" periodic gear shuffle..🙈 Definitely a decision I regret 😅
Me too! Can't want to actually own a copy, to see how it does wide open and on colour as well... Would definitely be making a video on that!

Great review, Jeremy. And of course we love your gear reviews, even if they're limited in terms if in-use experience. It's obvious that you put lots of thought into them so your conclusions are still very useful to those of us who may be in the market for something new.
A recommendation now! I think I've noticed a few of your shots use flash (the frog comes to mind), and that's something I've wanted to learn to do well for a long time, but on film I find it difficult to test and compare unless I take a ton of notes on my settings and subject. If you feel like it, a video about flash use in B&W film photography might be cool!

Thank you!!! :) I’m glad it was helpful!
Oh that’s a great idea!! I’ll see what I can do.. In the meantime here are a few tips that might help!
Firstly, most automatic flash units tend to overexpose. So bumping it down by half or 1 stop usually works well. (Experiment with this!)
Next, if a flash burns out a subject, with films ability to handle overexposure, you’re generally able to pull down exposure in the scanning phase to make things look more even, but it has to be done on the “scanner level” - before being exported. For example, if you send film to a lab to be scanned, they must pull exposure down before exporting it or it won’t be recoverable once it’s compressed into a JPG!
The third thing that comes to mind is less technical and more in terms of taste - be mindful of how close the subject is to a back ground. An on camera flash will create a harsh shadow behind a subject (it isn’t a bad thing, but it can look jarring at to,es), so if you place a subject against a back ground that is very far away, that harsh edge is minimised, and it helps the picture look a little more natural.
And finally - be mindful of layers, if you have a subject 0.7m away, 1.2 meters away and 2 meters away in the same frame, the flash will hit them all with varying intensities, and it can look unnatural if used unintentionally. (Dark room photographers would dodge and burn to even things out, you can do that in photoshop as well, but it’s a lot of work). So in general, keeping multiple subjects along the same plane helps! (eg, all 1.2 meters away, instead of being staggered)
And finally finally, a really nice way to use a flash is to expose about 1 stop under the “correct exposure” (eg, your camera reads F8 1/50th is correct, you go to F11 1/50th), then use the flash to fill in that gap. That way the scene is pretty much lit, and the flash just supplements, it gives a look that I really like! If you severely under expose and rely on the flash to do everything, it can look quite jarring. (Again, not a bad thing, that’s definitely “a look” and can also be used to taste).
Oh man what a long reply. I guess with example pictures, this could very much be a longer video… haha!!! Ill begin working on it. Thanks for this! But in the meantime, hopefully this helps! :)

    Nice review!
I got my LLL SPII lens almost 2 months already. This lens performs well at low light condition when wide opened, cinematic feels. Stop down to f2.8, the character changed. Of course I shoot with digital M, made my low light shooting easier. I removed the built in filter protector too, it is too dangerous and too thin to be a protector. 1/3 of the thickness of normal filter. The other main issue is the disappearing of f stop marking, that was why I put on another filter in front and extended the lens a bit, so that the hood won't cover the marking. ( What a stupid design they are over-looked )
I am very picky on the smoothness of all my M mount lens. I re-grease all my Leica lenses, Voigtlander lenses too when I bought them new. I expected all lenses have the same smoothness and damping. No exception for this LLL SPII too.

Oh thats interesting! Didn't know the filter was so thing! Haha! Great to meet someone else who is picky about focusing rings... So has your technician been able to smooth out your other LLL Lenses??

@@jeremy-t I did it myself for all my RF lenses. Even the brand new Leica one may not be consistent for its damping across the line.

I fully agree. I have one as well, and the focus is a bit stiff and "jumps" when you try to fine focus. I mostly use it on my Nikon Z7II, focusing at 100% magnification in the finder. And for portraits wide open critical focus is absolutely crucial with this lens, since you do not want the slight glow which is desirable in the out of focus areas in the plane of focus. A compliment to this lens is that it is possible to focus precisely fully open, which with many large aperture vintage lenses is much harder. I am a big fan of this lens, the slightly lower contrast seems to preserve highlights better than more contrasty modern designs. And the lens exhibits "soap bubble bokeh", which I personally like, in certain highlights. Haven't had it on my Leica M6 yet, but that is hopefully next.

Hello Jeremy, I saw a used copy of this lens at a reasonable price, know the reputation of the original, and remembered you had done a video on it, so here I am. Can’t say I’m dying for another 50mm normal speed lens, but it does look interesting. I wonder how it would do on a digital Leica? Did you end up getting one? Thanks again for all the care you take in putting together all these reviews. Much appreciated!

Hi Jeremy! Where do u go to send ur gear if u dont mind sharing? i was thinking of changing my IR filter on the M9 and was looking for a guy that does it well.

    • @jeremy-t
      @jeremy-t  Před rokem

Hello! Sure I could, but the main person I send my stuff to doesn't do digital cameras, or complicated modifications.. He's great at meticulous CLAs and overhauls, adjusting the tension on shutters etc. If you're looking for something like that I could pass you his contact!
The IR filter on the M9 is pretty specialised, hopefully you'll be able to find someone who can help with that :)
