I was Fifteen in 1978 & my late mother & I took trips to Colchester to buy household things like bedding & curtains etc. I was born in Clacton during the great freeze of 1963 & lived there until I got married then moved to several locations & ended up in Colchester & have been there for thirty four years now. My grandmother also lived there & my grandfather who worked at the Red Lion Hotel. My late father also worked for the M.O.D all his life at the barracks, he was a royal engineer REME. Lovely to see life how it was then again..back to normality for a few minutes. Thanks!
Year before my family moved from Bury St. Edmunds to Colchester as my father needed the mainline train services to The City following a promotion. My Mother still lives in Highwoods and Sister in Wivenhoe. I moved to Kent in 2002 (live in Whitstable).
Things don't chang much for the better ,the place is still run a bunch of twats employing more twats so the twats employing the twats don't look as twatish as the twats they employ.
Very beautiful, cheers for posting m8! You might check though because some of the motion of the people look too fast. What probably happened is that it was filmed in 18fps as was done a lot to make the film reel last a bit longer, as opposed to 24fps. But this was then projected at 24fps during the video transfer process, so the speed looks too fast. Should be projected at 18fps to correct the speed. Anyway, was good to see the ol' place as it was before so thank you for posting!
Fascinating views and I am able to recognise so much, having lived in Colchester between 1964 and 1972. I remember the 'Cameo Cinema' in the video as we lived for a time just above it in the Liberal Club flat on the top floor. The cinema was a Liberal lecture hall in the 19th century and then became an 'electric cinema' and then an arts cinema. It was showing a lot of what we thought was 'porn' in those days! Looking at later videos, I now recognise almost nothing from the town I knew so well in those long off days.
Lovely Bedford 4 tonner at 5:48. Got to ride in those a few times as an army cadet back in the day, although the ones we used had the tarp cover and not the fixed horsebox type thing that one has. And at 6:55 check out the bloke in the white shirt and black trousers, centre of the shot. He was an absolute blimp by 1970s standards and everyone was slimmer back then.
I think that the most noticable change in Colchester is the complete lack of Soldiers and their famlies The sheer comfort of walking down the High St on a friday or saturday night, safely behind two MP's was very memorable. The Irony that 'The Purple dog'Pub in Eld lane used to have a sign on the window saying. No Drunks, no dogs and NO IRISH...

Looks great compared to now
Been living in Colchester for 10 years now, this is so cool to watch
If you thought it was bad in 1978 then come and see it in 2018.
I did! And I thought it was bad.

Those are the days you could actually park down the high street for a hour & go shopping

Colchester, Connecticut sure did look a lot different back in 1978.
'They' did nothing to the town. Times just change. Evolution of life.
Wow I was 15 then
It really doesn’t look that different 50 years on.
Well it's worse now lol
Great video but I can't hear the commentator...
Are you deaf ? Or just stupid
