This thing sounds amazing! I've been a King's X fan since the 80s when I first discovered them. And I've always loved Dug's playing and tone (and vocals!)
Sounds great. I especially enjoyed Josh's performance of "Hysteria." Great flow. And by watching him, I learned an alternate fingering for the second phrase of the line (the part where it moves down to the low E string). I'd always been playing it open, 10th, 12th. Going to try playing it where Josh did to see if it works a little better.
You guys could make these videos 3 hours long and I’d still watch them multiple times. Thank you for making such Fkn awesome content. Cheers Also, I think tech 21 has enough of these “fly rig” pedals for a fly rig battle just a thought.
I absolutely LOVE this pedal. Had it for a while, sold it because I you can't switch between two sounds. I then tried to replicate with Line 6 Helix and a analog frequency splitters... and after a year, I ordered the Bass Butler and this one again. Bass Butler is good, but this one is my favorite pedal. So many features in such a small pedal. Mix-ready sounds, it's killer!
How could you not switch between sounds..for example say you ran this as a stomp box...one sound your amp sound..second sound more fat from the pedal engaged not distorted..then a 2rd with the drive kicked in?...or am I wrong.
Great informative video. It was especially helpful that you went through a bunch of sample settings and how each control changed the tone while the bassists were playing. Much appreciated.
Crazy Technology in 2021 thank you tech 21 for awesome innovations to bass as well as guitar sounds Just recently bought a Sans Amp RBI. Still working with sound
I have this pedal. Insanely versatile...sounds great with either my 4003 or my 1980 BC Rich Eagle. I've gigged it hard...it's sturdy as hell and sounds great. I run it both through my Orange bass Terror and DI to the board.
I finally picked one of these up a few weeks ago. Out of my 32 years ofl playing (and owning another SansAmp and Darkglass pedal) this is IMO far superior and has the tone & versatility I want. I have a Boss TU-3 tuner and a Seymour Duncan bass compression pedal, but I can ditch those two pedals to the side so that I have less clutter on state. I wish this thing was invented back in the 90's when I was lugging around two Eden WT300's (used at the same time) into a SWR 2x12 and a SWR 8x8. I would have loved to have been able to pull this little unit out of my gig bag and have the sound person plug into it for all to enjoy. This pedal is a keeper for me & the best IMO. However, I'm still curious about the Frank Bello SansAmp that is going to be released soon.
Being a huge King's X (and Tech 21) fan, I got this pedal when it came out. What can I say? It sounded great in the music store, but I'm never been happy on stage or in the rehearsal room. The clean section's got a "plastic" kind of tone, the distorted channel sounds really muddy to me and it's really hard to cut through the mix properly. Dug's personal setting is the only one that works great, but you gotta have brand new strings every time or it sounds like shit. To find a decent tone you gotta drastically tweak the EQ and if you play with your fingers it sounds good just if you pluck hard (Steve Harris style)... And, as I said before, don't forget the ultra fresh set of strings. This pedal looked like a dream... DI, EQ, tuner, compressor and one of my favourite distortions in a small unit. Unfortunately I always disengaged it every time because it was impossible to hear my bass properly through the mix in a live situation. To me, the good old Sansamp bass driver DI is still the best pedal by Tech 21, way more effective, versatile and usable.
Interesting. I use it for everything but have never used dUg's settings. I cut right through the mix with all my bands...from blues to rock amd everything else. Onstange, my rig is an Orange 1x15 with the Orange Bass Terror. I DI the dUg pedal straight to the board. Never had an issue.
I have both, along with the older Programmable Bass Preamp. Use them with a Rickenbacker 4003 and an active Epiphone Thunderbird Pro. Finally, these are the sounds I tried so hard (and failed) to get with other hardware and software. A totally mix ready sound! Having the 3 Tech 21 pedals might be a little over the top, but they each really have their own character. If I HAD to pick just one, it would be the old reliable Programmable Bass DI, with the 3 presets. :)
Love the tone of this pedal, I have it on my board, it's great for a good cleaner distortion, one issue I have is that they should have put in two level controls for the clean and crunch Chanel, because the clean is way to high when switching between the two, and you have to adjust it when switching Chanel, which sucks if your live, so now I only use it for the crunch Chanel. Would have been so much better with two volumes.
RIP WILL 😢 Josh and Jayme continue to impress! This pedal is a lot more versatile than I thought it would be. Is there a big volume jump when you engage the mix mode?
Honestly, with all due respect for the excellent work you guys are doing on this channel, the constant emphasis on metal bass distortion makes most of your gear reviews useless to me because the sound of the gear is buried under distortion. There are very few amp pedals that have a musical distortion sound, the DG AO is one of the few where distortion actually sounds musically usable; the rest sound like noise, to me. I was really glad to watch your DG amp pedal review showing their non-metal tones. Maybe more videos that don't have metal as their default setting would show off the actual sonic depth and tonal characteristics of the gear better? Just a suggestion.
I had this pedal, 2 of them in fact. I loved the tones but unfortunately found a huge change in audible volumes between the Doug/Mix channel and the clean channel, making it a bit impractical if you change between the 2 mid song or even mid set ( you don't want to try to adjust your volume all the time). I loved its sounds and wished it did what I needed. I even talked about this with the engineer who designed it at Tech.
Yes, I found that too. I love mine for the mix section but when i switch to the clean channel it not only loses volume but some of the tonal character as well. I still love it though and can dial in great sounds by just messing with the crunch/drive section.
I just got this pedal 5 days ago. Have tried it a few times. It seems to be a one trick pony to me. It's basically and overdrive pedal with built in compression. I never could get much out of it. Tried a bunch of different settings and it all sounded the same. My amp settings were all on flat settings. It's a $300 overly layered overdrive pedal. Just can't get into it. It's MEH.
Happy Friday bass-fam, I HOPE YOU DUG IT!
Nick Maffei my bass was sounding dull until it had a Pinnick attack.
Lol

Best review/demo I've seen for the DP3X! I've had mine for nearly a year and now feel like I've barely scratched the surface with it.
Sounds great. I especially enjoyed Josh's performance of "Hysteria." Great flow. rome8180 Josh is a Panzer finger machine
I got one and it totally kicks ass!!! I like the part where the compressor fades out before the bass separately....totally cool move on that part !!!

Tommy Tung Giant pedalboard covered in all-in-one flyrig pedals? ...🤔

Love mine!! I also have an RBI and Geddy Lee racks. I can't wait to add a Steve Harris to the arsenal!! You simply can't go wrong with Tech 21.

What a great produced review for a great product

Pinnick's sound is designed to be full since he pretty much plays just enough to hold down the bottom. That wouldn't work for everybody.
Killer pedal. \m/ I do like the killer drive sounds you can get.
Best pedal ever

This pedal was on my radar but the lack of fx loop was a big "no" for me.
I love their bass boost chorus pedal. It looks like they stopped making them though. 😥
That Chorus is the chorus I judge others by... too bad it got discontinued...
I know. They need to bring all that good stuff back
@@coreyclark6505 Yeah, I've played a lot of chorus pedals too. That one is the best. Well, so far. 😉
It's a great pedal, and actually works very well with my YYZ
Loads of great tones, and the clip at with the custom Thumb at 1:24 is Godzilla-like.
I would love to have this next to my Steve Harris pedal!🤘🏼🤘🏼
I have both, along with the older Programmable Bass Preamp.

Haha whoa hold your horses!😂😂
Ok, fine. The TA-500.
Not my baby!!😱😬
love that second riff

That cutaway SP reference was gold.

Like, did Will die? Or did he leave the channel or something?
I’m sure Will is fine I just really enjoyed his content on the channel.
Will wasn't the second clip they played? They never showed the person's face, but it wasn't Jayme or Josh.
rome8180 seems even weirder if it was

Awesome review. Like always. Thanks
thank you!!!!!
I wish Tech 21 made more rackmount stuff.
My one problem with tech 21 pedals is the lack of an effects loop. Quarter inch it's no biggy. But I like going xlr.
Great review. Cheers.

@@stevendugger3722 I returned it and got the EBS Micro 3, I like it alot, but miss that Pinnick pedal Mix crystally highs.
@@YoloJ11 oh, for sure. I picked up a hartke bass attack 2 that's pretty cool. Between the two there's alot of options.
nice playing
3 rd riff bad ass also
yooooo! Miss you guys!
Miss you, too!
Why does this guy sound like. A top 40 DJ?
this sounds great... what is the xlr output used for? can this be used as a DI also?
Yes. When I play live, I go direct with this pedal. That's all.
Brad Divens posted some vids on FB playing his Hamers thru it. Sold me. Sounds very similar to the ged model they make. What's different???
thnks guys
The song play with warwick is Kansas ?
The dUg setting sounds very similar to tones that you can achieve with Dark Glass products. Just sayin'
I ABd one of these with a Darkglass b7k ultra. Walked out with the dUg. Didn't wind up liking the Darkglass at all.
Yep. What I thought too.
This or regular tech 21 bass driver v2 ?
The sound at 6:26. Wow!
Does the dp-3x need a specific power supply? I bought used and they didn't include a dc adapter. My regular power supplies don't seem to work.
9v 200ma center negative plug

We all just got DPed.
Kinda sounds like a scooped SVT
Dug used to use SVT for clean bottom end and used a Tranyor/Fender guitar head for his distorted sound back in the 90s.
Not else...😕
Not convinced. I'll stick to my X7, sounds waaaay better (for my needs at least)
dont talk so fast , please.
He sounds normal to me.. Perhaps use CC?
Same price u can buy a Katana 110b and make the same sounds and more!!
