I wouldn’t particularly want to associate 1857 as a freedom struggle disagreeing with Savarkar on this rare instance. I think it was more of a rebellion honestly. A bunch of religiously driven soldiers who chose to proclaim the incompetent and by this time no more than a “King of Old Delhi” but still the Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar II as the Emperor of India and was supported by a bunch of disgruntled princely states. While major native powers like Rajputs, Sikhs and Nepal sided with the British. It is hard to decide who was fighting for independence and from whom. Mughals were no benevolent rulers either. So idk if 1857 should be branded an war of independence. Atrocities committed were terrible and they were committed by both sides. But glorifying the rebellion, is idk doesn’t really fit well with me.
