As a cashier, definitely watch the register or check your receipt. We make mistakes and may not always catch it. We’re definitely not always aware what exactly is on sale as some people seem to think.

    # 1 • When the grocery fliers come out, use them to plan ur menu for the week. Roast beef on sale? Great! Have a roast on the weekend, set aside some chunks for a stew, and slice the leftovers for sandwhiches. Potatoes on sale? Great! Make boiled potatoes with dinner & reserve some for a potato salad, or bake some crispy roasted potatoes & use the leftovers the next day, sliced & fried in bacon grease with some eggs.
    # 2 • Eat something (ie. tea & toast) before u shop for food -- u buy too much crap when ur hungry (those microwavable dinners look so yummy when ur tummy is making noise).
    # 3 • Don't be afraid to shop for reduced priced items: the food is not spoiled (it's against the law to sell rotten food!) but u do have to cook it or freeze it as soon as u get home (ie. dump raw meat into a freezer bag + a jar of sauce, then freeze it... then, on some future day, u can dump it into a slow cooker / crock pot to cook while ur at work or out running errands). U can cut the brown bits out of reduced veggies, then chop the good bits to use in a stir fry / stew (even reduced fruit can be chopped for a fruit salad, with a bottle of clear soda-pop, like ginger ale, poured over the fruit). Just don't buy reduced oranges, mushrooms, or avocado; they always seem to be off... but crispy stuff like green pepper, carrots, celery are usually ok.
    # 4 • Never buy pre-spiced / marinated meats... the store will often use meat that is close to spoiling, and will add a strong flavour to disguise it (ie. pepper steak). Instead, go down the isle with the international foods, and buy a box of spice mix to spice up some fresh meat urself (ie. I bought kabob spice mix, and added it to ground chicken with egg & bread crumbs, and squished it onto wooden skewers that I soaked in water for 15 min to keep 'em from burning, then bake in oven or BBQ)
    # 5 • Feel like u have no food? Take inventory of ur cupboards, fridge, and freezer, then input the items into a website that brings back all the recipes u can make with what u already have on hand

I freeze bananas that are getting to that “too ripe” stage and use them for smoothies and banana bread. BIG thing I did was take actual inventory of my freezer and pantry. It’s AMAZING what one has and doesn’t know/remember it. Helps with shopping too and restocking. Bought a small handheld sealer on Amazon and I am thrilled how easy it is to work at keeping my food fresh. I also divide up large items into meal portions, chicken breasts, tortillas, pork chops, etc. that come in a large package. Thank you to all that gave me new ideas. 😊

I have saved so much. Another tip is cook what your family/kids love, get them involved in meal planning. And I don’t cook every day. I cook enough for 2 days. I make a list and try to stick to it. If I forgot something I make sure I add it to the following week list.

Fruit and veggies are not the only thing that cost more pre-cut or prepared. Hamburger shaped into patties, cut up chicken pieces, diced ham...you pay for the labor to do these also. Get whole fryers and learn how to cut them up...freeze what you won't use in a few days. Save the backs and wings for homemade soup. A ham steak can be used in part as the steak and the rest diced to add to mac and cheese or potatoes or with eggs in an omelette.

Cook meals that can freeze. A large lasagne can cut into 9 pieces (or more), which means you don't have to eat the same thing every day. Which I don't mind doing because my food is better than restaurants. You also have meals for later. Wrap them individually in cling film (when cold). Buy large packs of chicken and bag/wrap them individually before freezing. Do the same for meat. Then you just take out what you need for a meal. I agree buy frozen carrots/mushrooms/onions/peppers (grab a handful of only what you need, less waste). Mince garlic and freeze it flat in a bag. Then break off what you need for a recipe. Cook once a week. Meals are ready when you want them and you get more time to yourself during the week (less washing up too). Check the price per kilo (in Europe). Be inventive with canned foods. Ratatouille is quick and ready made pasta sauce. Add items to your shopping list as they are running out. I never run out obviously, and I never add things in the shop that weren't on the list. Don't take children shopping (unless it's to carry bags or stand with the bags at the store door! Don't meander through the shop. Get what you need and leave. And, BTW where I live vouchers and discounts are non existent. As a single person I never have to throw food away, or waste it. I don't agree with online shopping. I have to do it for my parents and it takes five times as long as taking a list and going straight to the aisle (life's too short). Europeans aren't like Americans. We are used to having reusable bags. Not like Publix 3 items per carrier. WTH.! You don't need cash if you have a list. Nothing worse that asking the cashier to put stuff back!!!! In front of people. Finally, this video could have been seven minutes.

About buying groceries online : I don't like to order my groceries but the supermarket I go to has a an option for online shopping (like most supermarkets I guess) so I "do my shopping" through this site but without checking out, then I go to the actual store and buy the products I've already chosen. Very helpful, I have the full price calculated, I don't spend too much time at the store picking my products since I already know what to take, and I get to pick the item.

These tips are excellent. The pandemic has impacted all our lives, but I've found a plus that was also mentioned here. My husband and I are high risk, so we've been shopping for groceries exclusively online. I've found that my grocery bill is much lower, because we compile a list of what we need before we order. Then, I order what is on the list, and stick to it. I'm not distracted by impulse items that we might have seen in a grocery store, and we spend much less. I miss being able to shop in person, but I don't miss all the extra money we used to spend. It really adds up! I'm glad I found your channel, and I subscribed.

Wrap your celery and your cucumbers in aluminum foil to keep it crisp longer. Check on your phone storage method for whatever fruit and vegetables you just
purchase. They not only last longer but ripen better. Avocados keep in
a brown paper bag with a paper towel in the refrigerator, take out a couple to use leave on the counter in a couple days they are perfect. The stores have cardboard cases of fruit and vegetables in the cooler. I keep all my receipts by month in envelopes in case I have to return an item. I keep them at least a year. Once there was a ten dollars rebate on dog food. I was able to get because I still had a receipt 3 months old and cut the bar code from package to mail in.

Great video! I had a professional organizing business at one time and teaching people how to live on less and decluttering was a real experience but I loved it.
Sometimes coupons don't always save money. Most coupons are for brand names and you really have to read the coupons carefully. Sometimes you can buy a store brand and get a larger amount of the same item for either less or the same amount of money.
I was really glad to hear you mention food storage. Dry canning is great for dry goods such as beans, rice, and pasta. Dry canning is so easy too. There are plenty of videos on CZcams for this. Having a food supply incase of emergencies that will last at least a week if not a little longer is wise.
Meal planning is always a good money saver as you mentioned. I find cooking from scratch is much cheaper than prepared or boxed foods. I usually cook up two different things once a week such as brown sugar meat loaf and a salmon loaf. I portion them up for meals and freeze them. I take out from the freezer what I want for supper the next night, the night before and put it in the fridge. That way it's defrosted by supper time with next to zero chance of spoilage.
I'm one of those twice a month shoppers. I live in the country so going to the store only twice a month saves on gas. I go with a list and I don't waver from it. I buy my milk in quart containers. I freeze them. When I'm half way thru one quart, I take one out of the freezer and put it behind the quart I'm currently using. By the time I need to use it, it's defrosted. There is no change in taste but you just have to shake it well before pouring.

I do home canning and have for 50 years. Hams went on sale for 89 cents a pound for the holidays, I bought 4. Three hams I cut up and wrapped individual servings and put in my chest freezer for sandwiches for the rest of the year. I simmered all 4 ham bones, prepped 6 pounds of Navy Beans and canned 58 pint jars of soup beans and ham using the ham bone stock and ham pieces from the bones and the forth ham. Now I have shelf stable ham and beans that will keep for years without refrigeration. My calculation was each pint serving will be about 50 cents each. Homemade good and I know the ingredients in every jar! I reuse the canning jars and only have to buy a new lid each time I can. I bought Loads of lids on sale 2 years ago.
After last St Patrick's day I got 20 Corned Beef flats for $1.99 a pound. I ended up with nearly 100 pounds of corned beef for $200. I spent the day canning in pint jars. Shelf stable for years. Now when I want my favorite dish, Corned Beef and Cabbage I open a jar and pour out the liquid in a pan to cook the cabbage, in about 7 minuets I add the corned beef to warm up and have a delicious homemade meal that costs about $2. a pint jar.

My frugal hacks: (1) make a list incorporating ingredients for a couple of meals (2) use non-dairy milk like almond or oat milk, it lasts longer than regular milk (3) freeze or make a smoothie to use up spinach that's on it's way out (4) cut down on meat. If I want meat, I get frozen shrimp (tail/legs still on are freshest and cheapest) defrost a few and add into a quick stir fry or whatever. (5) slice/chop your own veggies like onions and celery and put them in large freezer bags. It's just fresher and lasts longer

My only “produce hack” is I only buy cauliflower when it’s on sale for 2 for the price of 1, and only when they’re BIG! A head of cauliflower near me is almost $5! I refuse to spend that much on such a tiny little thing. And it’s hardy enough that it lasts forever in the fridge.

I truly hate Walmart at times for online shopping. There are no close stores, so I have to order online and have things delivered. The selection online is pretty bad, half the time they are out of stock, many of the items you can only get going to the store and picking up; over 1/3 of the items you cannot get 1 or 2 items, you are forced to buy 6 or more or it's "not" available for delivery". For a while they were charging more for an item ordered online and blatantly putting the in-store price on-line. They must have caught a lot of heat for that because they aren't doing it now. Deliveries were showing up looking like they had been through a battle, stuff broken, squashed, dented badly, no packing used at all. Target is pretty good, but unfortunately, they really don't have that much of a selection and they have their moments when it comes to deliveries and packing issues. Because of where I live, any fresh anything isn't delivered.

I don't care what they tell me, I AM putting in dill to make my pickles this year. Might have to start more "indoor gardening" just to keep the "water police" away! Thought about finally getting around to building a simple solar oven to help keep the house cooler also. As you are doing, want to do the jams and jellies, partly to give as Xmas gifts, along with homemade bread. Have to hunt down some Roma tomatoes, will do some checking around and I might be able to get them for nothing, except the labor of picking them up! I try to cut corners as many people here do, checking my local thrift shop and have gotten back to sewing for myself and my family, not just with new fabric, but re-working older clothing. Sewing and canning are a wonderful way to keep from spending too much for holidays and other gift giving.

GardenTreasures lol you should change your name to Rebellious Gardener. Where do you live? I’m guessing it’s somewhere hot. I live in Ontario, and although we don’t have a water shortage, they still charge us a fortune for it. I use rainwater and grey water to water the plants. I’m pretty frugal with the water. But nobody polices us about it. I use the hose if necessary. But I am conscious of it. My last house in Toronto was a bigger house with a smaller yard, and the soil was horrible. I grew a few things, but it was a struggle. Rhubarb did very well, so everyone got rhubarb jam for Christmas, and salsa. The tomatoes are dirt cheap in the summer, so every August I got cases of Roma’s and did tomatoes for sauce and salsa. This is my first year up here, so it will be an experience. I’d be sneaking the plants in too. Good luck, my friend. I will pray to the vegetable God’s for you. ☮️💕

There is also a reason that the cashier will ask for your phone number if there is a question regarding change. Don't take it as a personal affront. Once the register tape is checked at the end of the shift, the difference between cash taken in and amount rung up is verified.

In my opinion what kills a budget is convenience shopping -- that coffee stop on the way to work instead of making coffee at home and bringing it with you in a thermal cup, buying the convenience meals/ foods at the supermarket instead of cooking from scratch. People also waste money on unhealthy snacks like chips, cheesies, desserts -- make your own snacks of celery and cheese or whatever for when you watch TV in the evening. Another tip not mentioned here: bring a list with you when you shop, and don't shop when you are hungry as you will tend to over buy.

Exactly! Again, very useful Tips. Regarding your Tip about watching the register when the cashier is ringing up your items, is to be sure that THE CORRECT PRICE was actually the price you remember it was supposed to be. Over my adult lifetime, I've gone shopping and have found items listed in the store as being cheaper than the price coming up on the register, so I definitely bring the discrepancy to the cashier's attention. With the global electronic barcoding these days, it's less of an issue, but those places where price codes are manually affixed to the products, sometimes there's a mix up between what was posted and what comes up on the register.

Well, and I kid you not, my husband and I were shopping for cookware that HE LIKED because he's Moroccan and wanted cookware that he could use without the set falling apart, and we saw these boxed sets. THEY WERE MARKED DOWN FOR $14.99 USD. Oh, my word!!! We quickly grabbed a boxed set and went to the Cash Register. The lady saw on her list that those were incorrectly marked and told us that they were on sale for $799.00 and that a mistake was made. When we told her that several other boxes were similarly marked, I guess she just said to herself that she wasn't going to die on her sword over this and said that since its labelled for $14.99, she was going to sell it to us for $14.99...I'm sure after we left, she removed those remaining boxes from the floor to have them correctly priced, but we were extremely lucky that day. That set is still in beautiful condition.

Weigh those bags of apples too if there is a scale near by. Sometimes you think you're buying 5lbs of apples but sometimes they weigh less. I usually weigh 2-3 bags and take the heaviest one. They all cost the same get the most for your money.

Invest in kitchen scales. It will help you to divide bigger amounts of food in one man portions which you can freeze. That way there is no reason to throw away good food, and it will also be helpfull with keeping an eye on health

I make all my salad dressings which saves me money. A good interesting dressing in a bottle is very expensive. I made up three different dressings for one third less and love it as less sodium, less sugar, better oil and Fresh lemons.
