UVA SOM Opportunities at Inova

[MUSIC PLAYING] DAVID S. WILKES, MD: The opportunities at Inova will be game changing for the school. Our students will get access to a broader clinical experience, being taught by our faculty, able to collaborate between the Inova campus and the Charlottesville campus, and that's just the beginning. I think the future is very bright, and this is just the first step of what will be a really great opportunity for our students up in northern Virginia.
CRAIG CHEIFETZ, MD: Inova Fairfax Hospital sits in Fairfax County, Virginia with more than 2 million people. It is a widely culturally diverse community.
GLENNA ANDERSON, MD: This area offers a tremendous amount in terms of patient experience, diversity of patients, volume of patients, just great overall place to work and to live.
- Our students have an amazing opportunity to work with world renowned faculty.
- There is just a wealth of patient experiences here, diversity of patients, teamwork that's practiced. There's so much to be had from an education standpoint, and if I were a student, I would really want to get in there and start doing things. And I know that Fairfax Hospital gives you the ability to do that, and you can be the one doing it. You can be the one that's experiencing everything firsthand.
- So I loved being up at Inova Fairfax. So having being an EMT in Maryland for nine years, I actually transported many patients to Inova Fairfax, and I always remember being in awe of that hospital. I always thought that the physicians and nurses, all the providers, are just excellent, and I always felt very at ease transporting patients there. I felt like I was always welcome, and I had that same feeling when I went there for my clerkships. It;s an extremely diverse population, which I love and is what, I think, part of that experience is what has led me further to look for that type of population in my residency training.
- One of the exciting things about being a medical student and coming to our simulation center is they get to work with faculty here from the field that they're training in, so that they've already formed a very strong bond before they work together in the real environment.
- My experience at Inova was in pediatrics, and I had a terrific time. It was wonderful because there was definitely a very large patient volume, diverse patient population, and I found that everyone I worked with there was fully invested in my education. - We really learn best from our patients, and our goal as teachers and educators is to bring our students into that space.
SAMANTHA BUERY, MD: Going Into medicine can be stressful, and it starts in medical school and it never ends, even as a faculty member. And so when we created our wellness program, we kept in mind that we really wanted to ingrain in our students these lifelong habits, so that they could really have a healthy and successful future.
- As you consider where you want to go to medical school, you should look for a place or an institution that offers opportunities, and we have just that. We have Charlottesville, and we will have the opportunities at Inova that can only broaden your experience, both in the first 18 months and also later on in full time clinical years.
