He was and still is the best attacking rugby player ever. No body can do what he did. In my opinion dan carter is the best player ever. All round gifted player.
What a player. The memory etched into my brain forever is of him pounding down the wing at Murrayfield, under the floodlights in the pouring rain with two Scotland players attached to him, unable to stop him. I think he got a hat trick that night.
*22 - 8 (1994 France rugby union tour of Canada and New Zealand) wikipedia smart And it's coming from a French... they did a second test match the 3 of July vs All Blacks 23 - 20.
If Lomu had been Welsh, and based on this perrformance, the WRU wouldn't have given him a second cap. "He's too big to play on the wing, more like a 2nd rower isn't he?"
Except if it was behind him. Nisbo saying at one point about him being slow to turn and get back on defence, something that was always a weak point of his game. Interesting to see that players seemed to show a lot less respect for the sideline, something I've noticed in other games of this vintage. Nowadays there's continuous recycling of the ball and players don't get taken into touch when running the sideline as much, ensuring that supports can keep the ball in play. I think rugby's much better now for that reason- less stoppages.
I seem to remember Lomu had a terrible time of it in the next game and were calls to drop him. The French worked out he was not so great in defense and they kept attacking his wing.
He was dropped. When the Saffers toured Timu moved to the wing and Shane Howarth made his debut at fullback. Fascinating to note that neither Howarth, Kirwan or Timu went to the World Cup the following year.

Jonah Lomu was obviously one of the greatest players. But I still think it was reckless by the All Black selectors to have him debut on the wing at an international level. The All Blacks lost this series convincingly and it was the French who dominated out wide against some flawed defensive play. This blunder by the selectors could have ended a lesser players career before it started.
Not sure if alot of people realise this but he was also playing out of position . He had played almost all his rugby at number 8 in the forwards. Not many people in rugby could change positions like that and succeed.
