  • @carleckert6794
    @carleckert6794 Před 4 lety +5

    Dead heart in a dead world was the first album I got from them. When that album dropped my senior year of high school...dude. KoRn was out Slipknot was around...Linkin...then this thing. Opening Track....Narco...the riff was like, shit, is this dude going to start growling something nuts...then you heard Warrel Dane (RIP). Bitchin riffs and music, a singer that draws you in and can actually sing, then the lyrics that make you think. Loved it. In the wave of Nu Metal, there was this Prog Metal out of nowhere. Guitar solos was like never done anymore, and then there was Jeff Loomis (check out his solo projects, has one with Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpses). Love the tone, the riffs, made the guitar more of an stringed instrument than a percussion one. Jim and Val holding it down. There was another one Val playing on the cymbals like that. It was like all my favorite bands in one. Yea, a few tracks miss the mark, but thats normal with any band. But, back in the day...sweet jezbus.

    Warrel had one of the most eccentric, powerfully diverse voices. His voice changed a lot from the days with Sanctuary into when he was with Nevermore. If there was one band I want more people aware of it's Nevermore. Warrel is deeply missed. His passing was devastating to me. I have every album of theirs on CD though. Born and The River Dragon are great Nevermore tunes. Was lucky enough to see Nevermore during the inaugural Gigantour (Megadeth, Dream Theater, Anthrax, Fear Factory, Bobaflex, Life of Agony, Dry Kill Logic Dillinger Escape Plan)
    Singer Warrell Dane was also in another band, Sanctuary, and they had just booked a tour supporting Iced Earth (for Iced Earth's Incorruptible album) when Dane unfortunately passed away. Sanctuary pressed on forward with singer Joseph Michael, and they ended up having a very good tour all things considered.
    The album cover was done by Hugh Syme, who's the master of superimposed surrealism. He did most of Rush's album covers, a good portion of Dream Theater's, the Megadeth albums Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia, as well as The X Factor by Iron Maiden (which featured a wax model of Eddie)

Lately my discover playlist is blasting while I'm at work on Monday in the hour before anyone else is in the building and if a song makes me stop the shuffle to hear it again I know it's a keeper. When I first heard their music back in 1995, I honestly thought it was Iron Maiden, revamped. The song that I heard on Seton Hall’s college radio station is entitled C.B.F. It blew my mind.
    “ 42147” and “Lost” from their 2nd album, The policy of ecstasy are cephalically nutz. You probably should nap after each song or do a 70s disco auditory enema between each song. They are just THAT intense!!!

    This is best described as progressive metal. Other subgenre's it could fit in are groove metal (think Pantera, and the rhythmic nature of the guitar riffs), or Power Metal (a lot of 90's metal like Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, especially with the vocal style). They played on 7 string guitars, tuned to EVH tuning (E flat instead of E, with the low 7 string going to B flat). Some of their songs are quite fast, and could be described as having thrash elements, but they aren't quite full death metal or melodic death metal (typically near 100% screaming vocals, usually without slow sections). The guitar player was also very inspired by neoclassical guitarists such as Jason Becker and includes lots of sweeping (you could hear it in the background toward the end of Sentient 6).
    A good song that shows off the guitar playing is Psalm of Lydia. There's like 6 guitar solos in 5 minutes. An intro, an acoustic, then 4 solos where the two guitarists go back and forth back to back, and the verse and pre-chorus/ bridge riffs on that song are great. The intro solo shows off the sweeping technique very well.
    A good song to show off Warrel Dane's vocals and lyrics are My Acid Words, This Godless Endeavor, Inside 4 Walls, and The Final Product.

    Yeah Nevermore shoulda been huge. Ridiculous talent. Warrell Dane was a tortured genius, great singer, and writer. The u had Jeff Loomis, Chris Broderick. 2 finer metal guitarists u could not find. Van Williams, killer drummer. Just an amazing band.

    I dont know what kind of metal this is either. Ive been listening to them for 20 years. Great band... just a neat mix of influences, but distinctly American.
