  • In April 1979, La Soufriere, St. Vincent started to erupt: a large explosive eruption. Vincentians describe their thoughts, feelings and actions as this happened. They also describe what they have been told about the larger fatal eruptions in 1902.

I am a Barbadian who was 9 years old when this volcano erupted. I remember it like yesterday....hearing my older relatives talk about something hitting them in the face outside and I went outside and felt the small particles beating against my face in the way their described it. I remember being afraid to sleep in fear of an earth quake triggering a tidal wave as it was explained then. Today I know it’s a tsunami. We heard that the volcano in st vincent had erupted. That ash was heaped in our patio the next morning. That volcanic ash reached us in barbados. That’s just amazing. Think rumor has it it helped our crops that year to flourish. 👍🏾

The legacy of my maternal great-grandfather, George Edwards-affectionately known as Brother Eddie, who was born in 1874 or 1875 in St. Vincent-is profound. Brother Eddie heroically saved many lives with his fishing boat during the 1902 eruption of La Soufrière Volcano. He generously donated land for the Save Soul Gospel Hall Church and contributed to the founding of the Campden Park Agricultural and Experimental Station.
A versatile man, he was a farmer, fisherman, herbalist, massage therapist, and preacher. People from various parts of St. Vincent and neighboring islands sought Brother Eddie for medical assistance. He successfully treated and cured individuals whom medical doctors could not. His aid extended to the residents of Wallilabou as well.
Following the eruption, at least 68 Wallilabou families found new homes in Campden Park, with others settling in Claire Valley, where Brother Eddie's relatives lived. He was responsible for planting the coconut palms in Lowmans' Bay and worked as an operator and driver of diggers during the Panama Canal's construction.
Brother Eddie was a true all-rounder. His death in 1960 brought people from across St. Vincent and beyond to his funeral, marking the largest gathering ever seen in Campden Park for such an event.

Its december 31, 2020. Soufriere is acting up again ....
In 1979, my father Eardlie Allen ( Born in Colonarie, SVG but living and working in the island of Curaçao for over 35 years at the time) organized cargo with clothes and food with the Curaçao Red Cross and joined the Red Cross in a flight to Sint Vincent.
The Curaçao community ( with a few thousand SVG born countrymen) helped fantastic.
My dad has passed away 12 years ago ( 2008) but if he were alive, he would have done his best to help again considering the rumble the vulcano is producing now in the last days of 2020 - Michael Allen from the island of Curaçao
