    The notion of playing "from the main joint" is a myth, or to be more accurate it is a misunderstanding resultant from the neurological illusion that most players are under, as my publication states. The main/ large knuckle joint actually extends away from the palm while the 2 smaller joints (the middle and tip joints) both contract; all of this is due to the tip joint being the only joint that is intentionally activated at any time, contracting it with the most tight/ narrow/ immediate contractive trajectory that is humanly possible while allowing the middle and large knuckle joints to involuntarily move "as they will".
    Simultaneously applying requisite pressure to the string, both to stabilize the stroke and to control volume by "hugging in" from the right arm to the correct degree during each stroke is what makes people think that they are playing "from the main joint". Not one great player is or ever has, trust me, I've been analyzing and reverse engineering this for more than 40 years.
    All of this applies to each of the right hand plucking fingers including P, for both rest stroke and free stroke. The large/ main knuckle joint, where the finger joins the hand, must not ever be intentionally contracted at any time, for any reason while playing the classical or flamenco guitar. The only time a contraction occurs at the large knuckle joint is when the finger returns naturally to its zero point, its point of total relaxation, following each stroke.
    The uniform movement concept is completely false and is the result of Aaron Shearer's incorrect right hand technique directives. The 2 smaller joints contract while the main large knuckle joint extends, as I said above; this is the result of intentionally activating only the tip joint while allowing the 2 larger joints to involuntarily move freely. All of this applies to both rest stroke and free stroke; the only thing that changes with rest stroke is the orientation of the hand, such that the follow through of the rest stroke is artificially terminated at the adjacent string.

    If you watch the player in this video demonstrating what he calls incorrect technique, ironically that is when he is executing partially correctly; what is missing there is the "hugging in" from the right arm. This is the parameter that will result in the beautiful sound we are looking for, as well as serving to stabilize the stroke as well as functioning as the control parameter with respect to dynamics.
    If you don't me believe me, watch John Williams play Recuerdos, the live version from the 90's UK television show which is easily found on CZcams. At the repeat of the A section the camera zooms in on Williams' right hand. Pepe Romero refers to the right hand technique as being similar to "bicycling"; nevertheless, no one has ever before reversed engineered, described and presented the right hand technique correctly, until now.
    Best wishes to all, and happy practicing!

    Any advise of what type of artificial nails we can use , if we have issues with our natural nails ? what type, how to apply, maintain, where to procure or how to be home made and from what materials, etc ? thanks

    With a straight arm/hand the hand and the arm muscles are not relaxed. Place you hand and arm in the position he recommends and just let go of your hand to make it drop. Now you are relaxed.

    For a start the guitar is far too high up your body, you will get left arm stress as it’s not ‘hanging’ but being kept there by you shoulder and arm muscles. Second, your left hand position is also under stress as you will have to always keep it in that position. The best left hand position is to rotate your hand so that your fingers are further back and your thumb forward, thus way no stress. If you want to see how to do this watch Segovia or Bream, if you follow them you will be able to play for hours and most importantly make a beautiful sound.

      I’m really not sure where this technique comes from, but it’s the reason that so many young guitar players don’t make a very nice sound anymore.

      Segovia’s technique is too old fashioned. Check Vladimir Bobri ‘s book on the Segovia guitar technique. You may prefer other kind of posture but There’s nothing wrong with this guy’s technique in the video…😊

  • @johnlay3040
    @johnlay3040 Před rokem +1

    I don't agree. The RH should be hanging naturally and relaxed. If you put your lower arm at the edge of the table, and let your hand hanging, you'll see this natural position. Not the straight line position you suggest. You need to twist it anti clockwise a bit to make it straight line, therefore it's not relaxed. Segovia, Williams, Bream, Yepes all have adopted the position I mentioned. Just look at the photos and videos of them.

  • @NotoriousFunk

    The position is very relative from person to person, even the nails, i could never play with those long nails. Even the left had for my hands that neck position is completely wrong but again, it's very personal.

      @@NotoriousFunk Speaking of nails, how long do you like to keep yours and what shape do you file them to? I've played electric guitar for a while but I'm just starting on classical and can't find much information on this type of thing. Mostly just people debating whether to play with nails or flesh, but not much about how to use nails and how long they should be, etc.

    • @NotoriousFunk
      @NotoriousFunk Před rokem

      @@PeefRimgarGames I keep them short, the shape is personal and it depend on many things. I've used different shape getting a different sound, without nails you get a dark sound but technically you are limited and with a low volume. On the opposite with long nail you get a bright sound but technically it's more difficult to play. Then it is very personal, I had a mate in conservatory who had very long nails and he could play but he was able to use only the free stroke. In flamenco they mostly use short nails. In the end there are no rules if not what works better for your hands.

      I find short nails produce nice tones. With short I mean just enough to be seen above the top of your fingers.
