Hey Sneha, This is exactly what I was looking for. I started to read my first self help book today namely "The courage to be disliked" and I was reading in so much pace as if I was I was competing with myself that how fast I complete this book. But it turned out to be I gained nothing out of it. I just kept reading for the sake of reading and I heavily regret now.

Sneha Didi, I quite enjoy taking notes and annotating texts when I read a book. I have not yet read a great many self-help books because I feel like I learn valuable lessons from fictional stories. However, I read self-help books occasionally and I apply the lessons delineated by the author in my life. I recently read Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill for my book club. I will definitely read Ikigai by Hector Garcia and Deep Work by Cal Newport soon. I am currently reading Far From The Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy. You really actuate me to continue doing what I love. I love you

Hey, Ikigai is a good book if you are suffering to balance your work and personal life. However if the concept of Ikigai is the reason you want to read the book then you can just download the ikigai diagram. It's pretty explanatory. 😍😊

Yes, I have read The Great Gatsby. It's a great book. Amazing for classic lovers.
Yeah, self help books don't give the adrenaline rush that fictions do but there's a reason why self help books are repititive. Let's say someone is reading a book on manifestation and visualization. Half way through the book and they get the gist. If they close the book and start practicing "visualization", it won't work. Self help books don't work that way.
In fact as you said, even after reading the book thoroughly, it needs to be re-read, many times. That's the only way to absorb the information.

Sis my method of reading self help books is
I will highlight my favourite lines and quotations
I will write the highlighted things in a note and I'll memorise it later
And I write the different words which I don't know the meaning I'll search for the meaning in tamil and english so I can understand better and I'll memorise the words too so pls tell me sis is this is a good technique of reading
And I've started writing with coloured pens but I don't have post its pointers and all I have one color highlighter and 3 coloured stick pens but I'll draw like post its in highlighters so it will look good I'll be tempted to read again and again how was my technique sis pls tell me sis😀

I'm not saying self help books are bad. But in recent times there is a huge rush in readers especially indian readers to collect and read all the self help books out there . Self help books are not too late to be toxic. Following multiple self help books from how to wake up and how to sleep all end up impregnation of a character other than ourselves. And some junk self help books out there are like 'old wine in a new bottle'. They put up fancy cover pages, illustrations and attractive names for their books. Some even dare to start websites for self help. I think we should discover ourselves first and follow the instincts first.
Yes, just like forced positivity, sometimes self-help books propagate a very strange culture. However, I feel every book presents a fresh perspective to look forward to. We should not believe in everything the author says. We should self-analyse and retrospect. Adopt only those lessons that truly make a connection with us.
And I totally agree that because of this surge in the self-help industry, a lot of authors are taking advantage and selling half baked ideas only to make money. It may end up harming people's mindset. So, it's very important that we choose the right books.
