  • Watercolour is traditionally painted on paper, but how do you paint watercolor on wood? or canvas? or any non-tradtional surface? The answer is easy, you need to prepare it with watercolour ground so that it becomes slightly absorbent and you can then get all the beautiful watercolour effects you love.
This is going to be a two or three part series. In this first film, I will show you how easy it is to prepare a panel with watercolour ground so that you can paint on it with watercolour. I will share an easy watercolour ground recipe too. If you don't want to make DIY watercolour ground, you can buy it from Daniel Smith, Schmincke or QoR. Ready made watercolour canvases are available, but as far as I know ready primed wooden panels for watercolour aren't.
I am using a deep edged birch cradle panel from Meeden. They kindly sent me a pack of five 10x10 inch panels to try out. The opinion expressed here is entirely my own. You can use any wood art panel - or make your own.
If you would like to try the panels you can purchase here and get 10% off using the code Liz10.
    meedenart.com?sca_ref=3687517.WIMJFLNH9d
This code can be used against any product, not just the panels (check out their ceramic palettes - lovely!). You will find they have different stock in different countries and currently only offer free shipping to US, UK, Canada and Australia.
This is the specific link for the panels - remember it is Liz10 as the discount code.

You can of course, use any panel. You can even use plywood, which has been cut to size. Make sure it is thick enough not to warp though and sand off any sharp edges once you have cut it.
Birch wood is used in panels because it is naturally low in acids, I believe. I cannot remember where I read that! If you know different, please let me know.

You do so many different things with watercolor! It's so fun to watch and listen to you explain something new, even when it's not actual painting! This is such a great idea! I'll definitely go one to the follow-up video and see how it ends up!

Thank you. I really like seeing what you can do with watercolour. It is such an under rated medium it is fun to see how far it can go.

Fab! The only difference is there is no bounce or weave, otherwise all the same pros and cons apply!

Another possible reason Birch wood is used, is it's remarkably clear, and lightweight, it seems. Just my opinion, no research.

@@blueviolets2022 "Typically made from hardwoods like oak, birch, mahogany and walnut (because softwoods are prone to warping), these panels last a long time, making them a good alternative to canvas for those who want their art to endure." As far as I can see it is not prone to warping and has a smooth grain....
